Not Groundbreaking, but Well-Executed

This is tough-guy detective fiction in the tradition of Joe R. Lansdale's Hap & Leonard: a couple of moderately bright tough guys from the low end of the economic spectrum exchange wisecracks and help the helpless. Our protagonist is "Boo" Malone, the brains behind the second-rate club-security firm 4DC ("Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"), based in a barrelhouse Boston nightclub known as the Cellar. A former ward of the state, Boo has a fiercely protective side that is roused when an upper-crust district attorney needs to find his troubled teen daughter and hires 4DC to look in the corners of society where the DA's police cronies are unwelcome. Boo discovers nasty business, not only in his own familiar corners, but also higher up the class ladder, as he rides to the rescue of the missing girl.
This is standard genre stuff and it comes with standard genre equipment, some of which functions better than others. Boo's partner Junior is mostly there so Boo will have someone to banter with and so Junior can make the tasteless jokes we wouldn't like Boo if he made. Boo also comes equipped with a pair of standard-issue narrative devices in the form of a computer guy he's known forever who the author can use to feed Boo information he would otherwise have no way of knowing; and a lethal, amoral tough guy who's devoted to Boo, along the lines of Easy Rawlins's friend Mouse or Spenser's BFF Hawk. These characters, and the tough-guy dialogue, are adequate to make for an engaging read, but nothing particularly new is done with them.
Other items work better. The hero is, of course, required to have a disapproving but supportive contact in the police force, and Boo has one, but this contact -- a pathetic junkie called Underdog -- is startlingly original, compelling, and complex. The seemingly invulnerable crime kingpin all of these books need is a pretty basic example, but the kingpin's main thug is a deeper and more interesting dragon than he first appears. And, most importantly, the character of Boo is non-generic: younger and far less wise than the usual tough-guy knight errant, he has a big heart but an alarmingly short fuse -- and there's nothing like him for dogged determination. Boo hangs on to a case after even Spenser would declare victory and move on. Author Todd Robinson also does a good job nailing authentic details of Boo's low-rent existence, including a realistic but not overly judgmental class consciousness.
The worst parts of The Hard Bounce are average; the best parts are excellent. And Robinson's lean prose makes for compelling reading even at its worst. I read this book in just a few hours, and having finished it, I feel sure that if Robinson writes a sequel, I'll devote another few hours to that.

"There's Tough And There's Hard" ...

When a child is exposed to repeated instances of violence; when a child loses all he loves; when a child goes into the "system," he can survive by becoming tough or by becoming hard. Boo Malone, the protagonist of Todd Robinson's "The Hard Bounce", is tough, but he has not been hardened by his experiences. He is that hulk whose appearance belies a heart of gold; he is a teddy bear when confronted with a situation involving a "damsel in distress."
Along with his childhood best friend and fellow Saint Gabriel's Home for Boys alumnus, Junior, Boo runs a security company 4DC. The Cellar, a Boston nightclub and client, provides a home-away-from-home for the two. It is here that Boo's company becomes involved in the case of a missing teen, Cassandra Reese, daughter of the DA. As the men get closer to finding Cassie, they discover that there is much more to her story than they were told. They are drawn into situations where murder-for-hire, pornography, and personal vendettas take center stage.
Characters in "The Hard Bounce" are real; they react in a manner consistent with their backgrounds and personalities. Although Boo, Junior, and numerous other Saint Gabe's alumni are not always the most moral individuals, they are interesting and strangely appealing. Humorous banter is used to cover their psychological pain and to get through tough personal situations. Their selfless defense of those they deem in need of protection is admirable. These are individuals you would want to have your back in dangerous situations.
"The Hard Bounce" is a tough read, but it is not a hard read. Raw language, violent scenes, and unsettling developments all combine to amp up the pace of the story and to ensnare the reader. Conservative individuals may find the language and story to be offensive. However, Todd Robinson has written "The Hard Bounce" in a manner which makes these potentially offensive elements authentic and necessary as they relate to the characters' lives and the environment in which they operate.

Takes A Strange Bounce

A Boston District Attorney is running for mayor. His 14-year-old daughter goes missing, and he's worried not only about her, but about the impact on his political fortunes. The police can't turn up anything, so he turns to . . . Boo and Junior, a pair of bouncers from The Cellar, a decidedly low-rent blue collar dive.
I wanted to like this book, but it's not that easy. Remember back in sixth grade, or maybe fourth grade, when some of the avant-garde delinquents first learned some swear words? Remember how they couldn't wait to try them out, and work them into nearly every sentence? Well, that pretty much sums up the dialogue here. Sometimes it's clever and sometimes it's devilishly funny, but mostly, it just gets old.
Boo's character is well fleshed-out, Junior's less so. Boo comes across like Spencer's bulked up but dim-witted little brother, who tries hard but lacks the mental horsepower for any high speed thinking. The main female character, Kelly, falls hard for him, for no obvious reason and contrary to all logic. Junior isn't any brighter, or bigger, or stronger, and other than owning a car, doesn't really add that much as a sidekick.
The story is pretty well thought out and crafted, with some nifty twists and turns along the way. The biggest mystery here though, is why the DA hired Boo and Junior, rather than an experienced PI who knew what he was doing. If that was ever explained, I'm afraid I missed it.
This is obviously the start of a series, and I'm hopeful the writing will get a bit more refined in future volumes. As for this book, well, it's interesting and decidedly different. If you're feeling nostalgic for the glory days of adolescent trash talk, this will certainly help to take you back.
