A Lightroom book that tries to be different

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is an image editing and cataloging program that has become exceedingly popular, especially with version 2. The promise of this tool is to make it easier for photographers to quickly download, sort, process, output, and manage a large number of images in a visually intuitive fashion. In addition, the editing process in nondestructive and can be adjusted or reversed at any time prior to export. For many, this is a less laborious workflow and demands less storage space for large, individually purposed files .

As with any sophisticated program, a whole industry has developed to help owners learn to use it. There are a host of books on the subject, most of which attempt to address as many features as possible to an audience from beginner to expert. The result is often less than satisfying; too much basic stuff for the expert, too much high-powered stuff for the beginner, and not enough pages to cover all the permutations within the program without needing a wheelbarrow to get it out of the store.

Richard Earney attempts a different approach. Instead of trying to be comprehensive and cover every possible within the program, he states his goal as showing how Lightroom "works and behaves and how best to make it work for you." The question is , how well does he succeed? The short answer is fairly well in some respects and not so well in others.

One interesting aspect is that he adds commentary along the way on additional digital imaging topics that are related to but not specifically part of Lightroom, such as color management, computer systems, file management strategies, and backup. While important issues themselves, this coverage in an otherwise "advanced" book used up a lot of space that might have been better used in addressing particular Lightroom features in greater depth.

Some Lightroom features deserve amplification, such as Presets -- "a file of settings that can be saved for applying similar effects on a repeated basis." Richard uses an entire chapter to delve into what presets are, how to apply them, and even how to edit preset templates in a text editor. This gets well beyond the general perception of Lightroom as a visually driven, intuitive adjustment program, but certainly could be worthwhile for technically oriented photographers who batch process large numbers of images made with similar lighting conditions.

The last chapter of the book contains a very useful and extensive list of Lightroom resources, of which there are many.

A couple of practical considerations. While screen shots and diagrams are certainly descriptive, there needs to be a balance between text and pictures. Too many pictures and there's little room for text, which is usually the meat of the book. There are an awful lot of pictures in this book. In addition, there are quite a few misspellings and minor editing errors which are unfortunate in an otherwise nicely published work.

If you use Lightroom should you buy this book? Maybe. The style is very readable and many of the discussions about specific tasks are beneficial, but somehow it doesn't seem to fully meet the stated objective of getting "inside" Lightroom, or to be a truly comprehensive resource for serious photographers.

This is it.

As a professional photographer, this was the book I was looking for. It doesn't restate all of what I already knew, but does provide some really good ideas on how to handle the workflow. If you come back from a shoot with thousands of images, this book will give you some tips on how to speed up the process. I like it.

Focused on Efficiency

Yes I'm giving this five stars (though the editors did miss a few minor things).

Why? Because Mr. Earney accomplishes what he sets out to do, which is focus on Lightroom efficiency.

Lightroom has matured and become more robust. There have been a lot of improvements, as well as new features added to this program. I know a lot of photographers who used to do the bulk of their post processing with Photoshop, and now do more than 90% of their post using only Lightroom.

This is due to the product improvements. This book focuses in on these changes, outlining what's new, and what's changed. All with the goal of helping to improve the photographer's efficiency in working with Lightroom.

Mr. Earney touches upon several things that I think are important, such as the use of DNG, color management, exporting from Lightroom, Post Crop Vignettes, Camera Profiles, Gradient Filter Masks, Adjustment Brushes, the Lightroom SDK, File Structures, Catalog Settings, working with Previews, Importing, Geocoding, Collections, using the Historgram, 16 bit printing, Presets and editing them, and Metadata.

The author also takes the time to outline what was left out of this release. In other words the most requested items during the public beta that didn't make the final cut.

The last chapter gives the reader a great list of resources for additional information.

This is not a book for the beginner, but rather for those who have been using Lightroom and are familiar with how it works and want to really dig in to get the most out of this great program.

This book is a resource and reference for me, not a how to. Well done!

The author offers a critical analysis of the relationships between powerful private institutions like the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and government and their intention in rebuilding urban communities by asking the question “How do we determine equity in benefit?” Focusing on a current rebuilding project using eminent domain to displace historical African-American communities, and the acquiring of land for private development, this book details the role of community organizing in challenging these types of non-community participatory rebuilding processes, resulting in the gentrification of urban neighborhoods. The detailed analysis of the community organizing process when families are displaced offers similarly affected communities a tool box for challenging current developers and government in unfair rebuilding practices. The context of these practices highlights the current laws and policies that contribute to continued displacement and disadvantage to poor communities without addressing the rhetoric of the intention of government-subsidized private development. This book examines the effect of such non-participatory and non-transparent rebuilding practices on the health of the people and place.

This book is a compelling example of community research that is sensitive to the intricate ways in which power is exercised. Focusing on efforts to redevelop East Baltimore, the author examines the complicated intersection of the African American community with the power brokers from city government, Johns Hopkins University, and philanthropic foundations. Activist and physician Gomez does a masterful job of telling the story of a neighborhood in trouble and its confrontation with the various parts of the urban growth machine. Middle East Baltimore becomes the site of a struggle between Johns Hopkins and the community over the expansion of the Johns Hopkins medical complex and the proposed development of a biotech research park by the university. Gomez's focus is on attempts of the East Baltimore community to organize resistance to the "negro removal" planned by Johns Hopkins. The author demonstrates how powerful actors can promote their plans and thwart the efforts of citizens to rebuild their community in a way that works for them. This is a carefully researched account of all the actors in this struggle. In the final chapters, the author demonstrates that other communities have confronted these issues in more humane, transparent, and democratic ways. Summing Up: Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

About the Author
Marisela B. Gomez is a community activist, author, public health professional, and physician scientist. She received a BS and MS from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, a PHD, MD, and MPH from the Johns Hopkins University. She spent 17 years as an activist/researcher or participant/observer in East Baltimore during and after training at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Past and current writings address social determinants and health, social capital and urban health, disparities in mental health care in incarcerated populations, disparities in substance use treatment, mental health care in the primary health care setting, community organizing and development, and mindfulness practices in organizing. She spends her time between the city and counties of Baltimore, Maryland.

Presents the residents of ME as innocent victimized children rather than giving an accurate account of good and bad points on both sides of the issue. The book is a simplistic attempt to blame a large university for the problems of its surrounding neighborhood.

Mike has written over 500 articles for magazines such as Macworld (UK), Pro Sound News Europe, Sound on Sound and AudioMedia, and for Electronic Musician and MIX in the USA. Mike's wide-ranging career and experience enables him to bring excellent insight from all sides into his writing, from technical detail to creative expression. Starting out as a musician and club DJ in the 1970's, Mike moved into professional recording in the 1980's, initially as a Songwriter/Producer for EMI Records. Later he worked as a Songwriter for Chappell Music; as a Film Sound Consultant for Dolby Labs; as a Music Producer for TV recordings; and as Senior Recording Engineer and Music Technology Specialist at Yamaha's London R & D Studio. For all Pro Tools owners a must to read

This particular book is probably the most comprehensive guide to using Pro Tools and the Macintosh computer around, and long overdue.
PC users of Pro Tools will also find this book to be of real value in acquiring skills with Pro Tools, but less so in the area of actual PC system management.
Considering the technical nature of the subject Mike Collins has managed to compose a book that is highly readable and very informative.
He does not miss a trick and for once there is a book out there that is right up to date even ahead of its time, unlike most other technical literature that is at least one release behind the times and usually more.
From managing your computer system to managing most types of Pro Tools sessions this book does not miss a trick.
Mike covers just about everything, from various Midi Interfaces, sequencers, Plug Ins etc, with a style that as far as I am aware is unique in this type of book.
Using his own real life experiences Mike takes you through, Mixing, Recording, Editing etc.
The book even goes into the future of Music with some great input on collaboration using systems like the Rocket Network.
All in all a great and entertaining book that not only informs, but also inspires.

Good for beginner...

Pluses: Color images and an easy read.
I did enjoy reading this book, and as a new user, running Pro-Tools LE on a MAC, it was useful. Takes you step by step through a project and a little mixing, but don't expect to buy this and hope to learn everything about Pro-Tools. A good book for someone new to the game, and maybe a few tricks and tips for experienced users.
Minuses: Doesn't fully cover all topics or ways to use features in Pro-Tools. Some things aren't addressed at all.

I was so happy to see that someone wrote a book about protools 5.1... and of course i did buy it right a way.... then i was shocked when i started to read it.... this book is only a really simple reduction of the protools Reference guide.... and actually a lot, lot less ..... i was hopeing to learn some new staff and some tricks ... well, i lost my money...

Useful but not the best workflow book

This book is ambitious. It strives to be the standard workflow reference or educational aid. The writing style is academic, meaning scholarly, and often this is a hindrance (scholars write for scholars). The subject matter travels hills and valleys in that it sometimes dwells on the obvious, while at other times skims over confusing technical topics. Mostly it takes three pages to state three paragraphs, which is another example of the academic approach.

A much better book is The Digital Photography Workflow Handbook my Juergen Gulbins and Uwe Steinmueller from Rocky Nook Publishing. This is an excellent book translated from the German work, Handbuch Digitale Dunkelkammer. Begin with this one.

Didn't Work For Me

It took about 10 or 15 minutes of looking through this book to realize it wasn't going to meet my needs. A book on the subject of best practices and workflow should be concise, yet elaborate on essential knowledge. This book was so full of theory and other fluff, I couldn't find the substance. To me, it was more like a textbook just waiting for a pop quiz. Sent it right back to Amazon who gave me a credit but not a refund. No problem, as I do a lot of Amazon shopping!

P.S.: Not what I was looking for but may work for others.....

This is one of the best books available for learning about FCP. It is clearly written, and addresses all the issues the beginning non-linear editor faces. The illustrations (mostly screen shots) are well selected and well placed. The material is well organized and treated with sufficient depth so that the reader gains a useful understanding of how and why certain techniques work. The book covers set up, work flow and editing technique in a very clear and complete fashion. It's a great text book, and I find it is also a handy reference too (great index).

Another plus is that the book is not limited to mere technical operations, the author is willing to discuss some of the reasons that underlie an editor's choice of when and where to cut. Roberts' attention to workflow and organization is also quite helpful, as is his willingness to show more than one way to accomplish a given operation or task.

I also liked the fact that the book was not organized around a downloadable batch of clips which you manipulate according to the books instructions. This technique certainly makes the teacher's job easier since all the instructions are quite specific, but I find open-ended instruction more palatable and ultimately more useful, especially if you are already working on an editing project of your own.

The chapters about the nature of digital video and a look at storage issues are full of really useful information. One of the best things about this book is that it will grow with you; you may skip some of the more technical discussions at first, but find them useful as your skill level improves.

Also, this book has a real index, not some computer-generated simulacrum that spots all the trivial instances where a word occurs, but seems to miss the meaty parts where the actual information is.

Although this book is listed as an "intermediate" level volume, as a fairly rank beginner I found it to be accessible and very useful. If you want to get a grip on FCP this book will help you do it.

Solid Reading and Information

The insider's guide to independent film distribution by Stacey Parks is an up to date informative guide on distribution for the new independent film maker. The only thing thats very important in this day and age which is left out is the topic of VOD/DOD which is a very powerful way to distribute indepedent films these days. For traditional distribution this book is excellent, but don't buy it if you want to learn about Video On Demand or DVD on Demand.

Topical Overview, But Lacks Credible Data

This book is actually a come-on for the author's $25.00/ month newsletter subscription service, which promises to provide the "real data" that is missing from this book. Anyone reading this book is probably an unknown producer with an unknown cast and unknown director. Although a decent topical overview, on the subject of distribution itself, it contains very little quantitative data. For example, aside from family and friends, how many unknown films with unknown talent by unknown directors written by unknown writers made for under $1M that receive 'distribution' via DVD actually have any theatrical, TV or DVD sales at all? A recent survey of one of these small film distributors, who offers a catalog of 133 titles, shows that the highest-ranked film achieved a blazing Amazon.com rank of 99,152. Other important data that are missing, but which might be available for an additional $25/month from this author are things like relative sales or Amazon.com rankings for small films by genre, how much a family picture might earn for the distributor (or directly from the producer) for Lifetime or Hallmark channel airing, or what is the correlation between small-film budget and potential sales (is there a profitability threshold as a function of budget as exists for studio films with general theatrical distribution)? There have been enormous changes in the numbers of feature projects funded through the AFM since the first edition of this book, as well as changes in the distribution of budgets of completed projects by genre, as well as the ratio of which pictures received distribution by 'negative' budget by genre, but none of that is mentioned here; even though it would seem to be essential information for someone planning on producing a film that would receive distribution.

Where the book provides useful quantitative information is in accounting for marketing and marketing collateral expenses during pre-production for a low-budget film.

The book also provides model distribution and sales contracts which, if they are up-to-date, could prove very useful.

The book is worth the purchase price in the anecdotal interviews alone, which are fun to read, although, again, neither quantitative nor dispositive. That is, they aren't very helpful in making a once-in-a-lifetime decision to mortgage one's house to produce a low-budget film.

All in all, quite enjoyable to read. But when you consider that only 140 or so feature films receive general theatrical distribution each year but yet 50,000+ screenplays for same are registered with the WGA, numbers mean a lot more than vague, qualitative claims.

Very Outdated, Not Very Helpful

This is one of the many books that's part of the Industry Built Around Getting Into the Industry.

In other words, this is not for serious professionals. Only for wannabes.

Here are the cons:
-- Writing style is stiff, awkward. And no sense of humor, devoid of wit.
-- Outdated material, especially with technical stuff. She actually talks about sending a VHS tape screener! I'm not kidding. And the date of this book is 2012. Who the hell uses VHS tapes in 2012? And she also talks about the virtues of shooting on HD instead of MiniDV SD. Yeah, pretty shocking that she thinks someone in 2012 is using an SD MiniDV camera.
-- The projects she discusses, and the people she interviews, produce (without exception) terrible films. Look them up. They are all action/horror crap. Bad actors, bad scripts, terrible directing. Just watch the trailers or look at their IMDB pages to see the super low ratings these projects have. There is not one single artistic or commercial success referenced that uses her techniques! Not one.

So, if you aim low, this book will help you hit your target.

About the Author
LISA MARIE COFFEY is a lifestyle and relationship expert who appears frequently on television and radio talk shows and contributes to various publications. She is the author of Getting There With Grace: Simple Exercises for Experiencing Joy, Getting There!: 9 Ways to Help Your Kids Learn What Matters Most in Life, and the coauthor of The Healthy Family Handbook. Coffey lives in the Los Angeles area with her husband and her two sons.

Entertaining book on Aurveda!

I am an Indian by origin. But, had no background or knowledge about Aurveda. This book, written by an American Author, who has also written many other wonderful books, introduced me to some basic concepts of Aurveday in American style! I enjoyed reading this book. Also, the website associate with this book was very useful and complements this book.

If you are reading this book, I would recommend that you first visit the website, whatisyourdosha.com and take the quiz to find out your dosha. I would recommend this book to anyone, who is curious to get some exposure to Aurveda and its concepts. It is a light reading. But, after reading this book, you may be inspired to do more serious reading on Aurveda, by some Indian masters. If you are very new to Aurveda, like me, this should be your first book.

The author of this book also has a new website doshamatch.com. Some of you may like to visit this site after learning all about your dosha from this book.

Ayurveda for the Western World

Whether you're interested in relating to new people in your life, your mate, your coworkers or your children, Lisa Marie Coffey's primer on Ayurveda can help you understand and nourish relationships.
Her grounding in the material is obviously the solid result of long study, and her writing is warm and accessible. As a long-time student of Ayurveda, I find her description of me so accurate it's a bit unsettling.
In "What's Your Dosha, Baby" you'll find everything from techniques to calm an irritated boss to the best form of exercise for your individual body/mind type. I highly recommend this book, and will be giving it to friends on gift-giving occasions.
