Talbott, A Guide To Understanding Dietary Supplements is an efficiently organized, clearly written, 713-page survey of more than 140 dietary supplements, critically evaluating which ones work and which ones don't. Summarizing the claims, theory, scientific report, safety, value, and dosage of each common supplement, A Guide To Understanding Dietary Supplements is an excellent consulting resource for physicians, pharmacists, and for interested non-specialist general readers with an interest in dietary supplements for health and fitness.

Excellent, objective, scientific overview of most supplements

Dr. Talbott's book strikes this reader as the best available in the area of nutritional supplements. It differs from the mass of literature on this subject by being very objective and scientific. The author forms his opinion on the value of each supplement on the basis of the medical literature. Using such a perspective enables one to cut through the hype, commercial biases, and personal opinions that are the major impetus for most of the other books in this area.

Dr. Talbott has a unique gift which is the ability to write about scientific explanations for the mechanism of supplements and yet make his writing understandable to a lay audience. I have rarely before read a science book that was such a pleasure to read.

While Dr Talbott's major emphasis is on the value (or lack thereof) of each supplement he also includes much additional material that is well worth reading. Foremost among this information are other methods (not involving supplements), such as dietary manipulation, to treat obesity, joint illness, and so on. He also has 50-60 pages of introductory information that cover the general area of supplements and allow the reader an excellent overview of the topic.

There is only one criticism that I make and it leads me to give the book 4 stars rather than 5. That is the fact that the book is now 8 years old. This would be a minor concern in some areas but we are dealing here with a rapidly expanding field. The book is in need of re-editing and I sincerely hope that Dr Talbott is able to write a new edition.

If you only read one book in this topical area, make it this one.

It saved me in Sri Lanka!

A year ago I was on an off-campus studies program in Sri Lanka and happened to have this book with me as I was studying in Lankatilike, one of the places Gombrich describes. It was so interesting to be able to read about how things were 50 or so years before I was there. The shrines even looked basically the same! It is also a great introduction to Sinhalese Buddhism (the closest thing to a How-To Guide for Sudus I've found). However, it is an old book and a lot has happened in Lanka since it was written. Even so, I love it as a reference book and keep it by me at all times when I'm doing research on Lanka.

an ideal introduction to the greatest transition in human history

This is one of those books that can open the reader's eyes onto a massively important era in human development. The neolithic age began approximately 10,000 years ago, marking the end of the 2 million year-old hunter-gatherer societies. The change was absolutely immense, in that humans began to raise their own food, became sedentary, and developed in outline the societies that have survived to the current day.

In McCarter's hands, we gain an overview of the major areas of this transformation. She writes as a scientist who can address a popular audience, at a high undergraduate level. While avoiding long debates or esoteric descriptions of significant artifacts, she goes over the essentials in a level of detail and complexity that keeps the reader going, indeed, that whets the appetite for seeking more - that is the surest sign of success in any reading experience. Every single page is chock full of ideas and descriptions that add to a comprehensive view of the age.

The book is divided into digestible sections, beginning with a description of the scientific tools, from carbon dating through mendelian genetics and many others. While a bit brief, it makes for a dense introduction. She then addresses topics, including pottery, art, trade, society, architecture and concludes with a discussion on why the transition took place - interestingly, she refuses to sound definitive when the science will not support the conclusion. In each instance, she discusses with exceptional clarity the method employed to reach her conclusions, the reasons that past ideas were rejected, and the areas of continuing controversy. Finally, she respects the reader by holding to what can be scientifically known - she avoids facile generalizations or the tendentious junk interpretations that infect such popular sources as Wired magazine.

What can be definitively analyzed in endlessly fascinating. For example, the domestication of animals led to fundamental adaptations in their appearance and behavior. The wolf was quickly inserted into west Asian settlements, often so altered that they have been judged as separate species; the same is true for pigs, cows, goats, and sheep. The mechanism for this change surprised me: it was via neotany, according to which offspring adopt younger genetic characteristics than those of their parents: shorter snouts, less dangerous horns, less sharp teeth, different brain capacity, etc. The animals apparently adapted from a combination of breeding, environmental pressure, and perhaps even human expectation. However, the animals were chosen for their compatibility in such areas as acceptance of hierarchical masters (human or their own kind), the ability to live in close quarters, etc. This will forever spark my imagination as I read about economics or study other societies. The author accomplishes the same thing in all the areas she addresses.

Perhaps most fascinating, many of her conclusions are stunningly counter-intuitive. The adoption of farming methods, for example, led to a DECLINE of human health: life expectancy declined, height diminished, new diseases appeared (both epidemic within urban agglomerations and from repetitive farm labor); indeed, the appearence of dental caries is taken as a sign of farm-based economies: higher levels of carbohydrate diets meant increased acid levels in the mouth, hence cavities. In addition, genuine social hierarchies appeared, which means that the overwhelming majority of human history was lived in egalitarian hunter-gatherer societies! Does that mean, I wonder, if humans existed naturally as socialists? Does this contradict the views that evolutionary psychologists are presenting (crudely put that hierarchy naturally reflects genetic superiority)? This is wonderful intellectual food.

It is truly rare that I find a book this stimulating. The wonder that it evokes is priceless: while expensive and short, this was an absolutely wonderful reading experience. The author's style is also clear and concise, without flourish. THere are ample illustrations as well, all adding to the text. It is a true gem and I hope the author produces more: this is popular science at its best.

Prehistory as You Need (and Want) to Know It

In this short but thorough book McCarter skillfully combines the scholarly and the readable. Her overview happily introduces the college student to the Neolithic Age, even as it clarifies and organizes the general reader's vague knowledge of that period. As a bonus, the author gives us throughout the text side boxes of fascinating related answers for questions we've always wondered about but couldn't quite formulate--for instance, why are there so many breeds of dogs and so few of cats?

Review of Neolithic

Very readable and informative. I have been reading many books on the Paleolithic and so this book was a good choice to help in understanding the transition to farming. The author does a great job of making the book an entertaining read, while maintaining scientific integrity. She clearly underscores the limits of our knowledge and the continued excitement of discovery.

A strong foundation for creating characters

There's only a couple character design books out there. Most notably Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels. This new volume of Force takes on design from a more exploratory standpoint. One that can also lead to a foundation of more informed choices when working with Bancroft's methods later on.

The text starts off with a review of the drawing techniques Mattesi laid out in the original Force. Not only the concepts of drawing with forceful lines and shapes, but also ensuring every aspect of your drawing make a statement about the subject. It's that thought process that leads to interesting designs.

This book has no shortage of examples of experimental designs based off of posed models. Not only from the author, but also from several noted artists including Stephen Silver, Dean Yeagle & Ragnar. Each example includes explainations for the artistic choices made.

Flipping through the pages of this book you, you won't find many of the tight, nailed down drawings you might expect from a character design book, but the principles Mattesi teaches build a strong foundation to create better, more interesting designs.

Awesome!

I'd like to express my admiration for Mr. Matessi's "Force: Character Design from Life Drawing" book. I've read Mike's initial Force book many times over. I actually never intended to purchase this new book. When I saw the cover originally, I got the impression that it'd be equivalent to the other character design book by a different author (since I think there is only one other available at this time). I figured it'd be other artists' drawings with a tidbit of info from the author. As time passed and I read other authors' books that bored me to death, I thought why not, I'll give it a go.

What I got... I got more of his first book. This is good because he refreshes your memory on the lessons taught in the first book, and then enhances it with new ideas and new procedures. I was blown away. The first 4 chapters refresh and recharge you on the idea of Force.

This book covers everything, and reinFORCES exaggerating and making up your own interpretation of what you see. In later chapters he shows you how to apply the same methods to architecture.

The first 4 chapters alone would have made a great book, and I'll definitely read this more than once. Something about Matessi's books just want you to tattoo the information on your brain. It is refreshing, and gives you a new perspective on art and life.

What I enjoyed the most, is the application of design and abstract art to his life drawing. This book would be a great read for a graphic designer as well. I even started applying shapes prior to illustrating to plan out my drawing, and it has improved my art so much.

Lots of great examples from guest artists

[[VIDEOID:36513491]]Force: Character Design from Life Drawing is the second book that deals with life drawing by Mike Mattesi, the first being Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators. This book also talks about character design.

The first part builds on the concepts he has taught in the previous book, which are the handling of force, space and shapes of characters. It's presented in the similar style, sketches with tips. For those who like the first book, you would probably like this one too.

The second part on character design. In addition to the sketches provided by Mike Mattesi, he has invited other character designers to contribute their work and thoughts. Photos of models are provided to them who then create their own style of work. Each artist then describes their characters in terms of acting and emotions, showing how they try to get ideas across to readers.

The guest artists are Rik Maki, Stephen Silver, Dean Yeagle, Jake Kazdal, Griselda Sastrawinata, Patrick Morgan, Ragnar, Erin Leong, Marc Perry, Teddy Newton, Steph Laberis, John Nenarez, Mike Daley, Phil Rynda and Deanna Marsigliese. They provide plenty of insights into their personal style, be it the cutout collages of Pixar artist Teddy Newton or the simple cartoon caricatures of Marc Perry.

At the end, there are also sections that talk about giving characters to architecture and animals. They are rather brief, but interesting nevertheless. For animal character designs, you can check out The Art of Animal Character Design for even more tips.

There's no one way to how character designs are done. The approach of this book is to give plenty of ideas to get you started. This book is for anyone who's looking to put more edge and style into their own characters.

About the Author
Aristophanes (ca. 446-ca. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a prolific and much acclaimed comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are in fact used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries - Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander contributing to the trial and execution of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." He is also known for some famous sayings, such as "By words the mind is winged."

AVOID THIS EDITION

At all costs, please do not ruin your impression of Aristophanes by reading this translation of THE BIRDS. It is a stilted, wooden mess. I especially implore any teachers out there to not use this edition. Your students will hate Aristophanes and never forgive you. For a genuine translation of the play -- one that maintains its rhythmic humor and allows the characters to have personalities -- seek out R.H. Webb's translation in Bantam's The Complete Plays of Aristophanes.

Trusting Pisthetaerus builds a utopian city for the Birds

The problem with "The Birds" ("Ornithes") is that for once Aristophanes does not seem to be attacking some specific abuse in Athens. Still, we suspect that even this little fantasy is not simply escapist entertainment. Certainly there are those who see it as a political satire about the imperialistic dreams that resulted in the disastrous invasion of Sicily (which happened the year before his play was produced in 414 B.C.). Then again, this could just be Aristophanes bemoaning the decline of Athens.
Pisthetaerus ("Trusting") and Euelpides ("Hopeful") have grown tired of life in Athens and decide to build a utopia in the sky with the help of the birds, which they will name Necphelococcygia (which translates roughly as "Cloud Cuckoo Land"). Pisthetaerus and his feathered friends have to fight off those unworthy humans, malefactors and public nuisances all, who try and join their utopia. Then there are the gods, who come to make some sort of agreement with the new city because they have created a bottleneck for sacrifices coming from earth.
Because it is a more general satire, "The Birds" tends to work better with younger audiences than most comedies by Aristophanes. Besides, the chorus of birds lends itself to fantastic costumes, which is always a plus with young theater goers. In studying any of the Greek plays that remain it is important to I have always maintained that in studying Greek plays you want to know the dramatic conventions of these plays like the distinction between episodes and stasimons (scenes and songs), the "agon" (a formal debate on the crucial issue of the play), and the "parabasis" (in which the Chorus partially abandons its dramatic role and addresses the audience directly). Understanding these really enhances your enjoyment of the play.

Essential Aristophanes

The Birds is considered one of Aristophanes' best plays - a worthy work that is still funny, entertaining, and thought-provoking after nearly 2,500 years and also now of great historical value. Though not Aristophanes funniest or most bitingly satirical work, it may have the best story and is likely the most imaginative. The plot is typically absurd but very creatively so, the amazingly thought out setting is truly remarkable, and the characters are very memorable. The play is also a powerful reminder of the easily overlooked fact that Aristophanes was an excellent poet; it has some of his best - and funniest - songs. He was also of course a brilliant satirist, and this is a preeminent example. His methods are as always diverse, including slapstick, but there are serious themes beneath the silly surface. The Birds is indeed a subtle religious critique and a nuanced look at all forms of tyranny as well as resistance. It also deals with issues of escapism - perhaps a clever and even half-mocking self-reference - and the concept of utopia. Simply put, it is essential for anyone interested in Greek comedy.

Unlike many texts on organisation and management, this book is itself a product of science; in this case of the science of Anthropology. The insights developed here are drawn from interviews with members of the Japanese scientific community. The result is a conceptualisation of issues that are relevant in all other areas of science. It is not that we all have the same concerns as Japanese bio-scientists but that issues raised here are relevant to how we might assess a scientific organisation and the ways in which we might adjust that organisation to enhance quality and productivity. This book is well organised and well written. It is interesting (even enjoyable) and you do not have to be an anthropologist to read it or appreciate it. Above all, I believe it will provoke thought.

NOT What I Had Hoped For

I read the book twice; gleaning little nuggets here and there.
The book highlights standard lighting techniques (which could be used with any type of artificial lighting)using speedlights. GREAT! What are my problems then, you might be wondering.
One "problem" with the book is that the author,chapter after chapter, continually attempts to "sell" the reader on the idea that using speedlights is a "great way" of shooting with flash. "YA, I KNOW THAT, that's why I bought the book in the first place" is what I was grumbling into the air as I continued read on to the end. His propensity to do this was annoying and left me feeling like I was getting cheated out of more helpful information. I don't need the author to tell me WHY I am using speedlights I want him to tell me HOW.
Another "problem" was that, like the title says (it finally dawned on me...), the book is only about using Nikon and Canon ETL speedlight/speedlite flashes. I was hoping that this was going to be a tome about off-camera flash using flashes in manual and setting up with shots using wireless triggers and etc. Maybe there would be some exposure tricks and tips that help the photographer get around using a light meter. I was hoping for, well, meat and potatoes..."strobist" stuff I guess. Maybe like how to train my eye and to be able to see the forest for the trees and vice versa when it comes to lighting. Oh well.
Don't get me wrong, I learned some stuff but...

Illuminating Flash

The relatively new flash systems offered by Nikon and Canon, which allow an amazing degree of automated control over illumination (with an increase in a certain type of complexity) offer amazing opportunities for photographers to capture images. Lou Jones and his fellow authors address those opportunities in this book.

There are just two chapter headings: One Light and Two Lights. But within those two chapters are discussions of many of the ways to use the new speedlights (as Nikon calls them) or speedlites (as Canon refers to them). The book is aimed at owners of the flagship flashes of each of the manufacturers: the Nikon SB 900 and 800 and SU800 and the Canon 550EX, 580EX, 550 EXMKII and 580 EXMKII, as well as compatible cameras. Owners of other flash units may or may not benefit from reading the text.

The publisher is to be congratulated for trying many techniques to make the information accessible. Instructions applicable solely to Nikon or Canon are coded purple and green respectively. Distinctions between textbook, anecdotes, warnings, etc. are also color coded. Lighting diagrams for each of the illustrative images are included in the back of the book.

One of the book's strong points is the discussion of the nature of light, whether natural or from flash, and the point that thinking of all light the same way will make it easier to control. Moreover the book urges you to allow the automated systems to do their work and to control the results by a few simple adjustments. There were also occasional tips on how to get more from a flash, like how to rotate the head of the flash to overcome the effect of the inverse square law.

I must confess that I was confused on my initial reading. The illustrations each include some lengthy text, and then require flipping to the back of the book. That combined with the war stories made it difficult to follow the instruction, especially since the illustrations didn't often relate to the instruction. However, when I read the text over without considering the text relating to the images or the war stories (the latter didn't seem to add much to the teaching points) the author's lessons became crystal clear.

Although aimed at specific Nikon and Canon flashes, this is not a guide to setting up those units. For that one must rely on the manual or some other book. The authors do not spend much time discussing lighting for portraits. Discussion of ancillary equipment like stands or snoots is limited.

Still, the lessons, which became simple and clear once I had finished my second reading, are important and not often conveyed by other books on lighting with flash.

Lou Jones & small strobes rock!

If you want to learn about small strobes, and if you are a "visual" learner, then this is the book for you.

"Speedlights & Speedlites" has some very cool features, first there are only two chapters in the book, chapter one is "One Light" (25 one light setups) and chapter two is (you may have already guessed) "Two Lights" (20 two light setups), each image is accompanied with the "inspiration, how's, and whys" of the shot and a complete lighting diagram.

To make it as simple as possible to follow along the book is even color coded (Nikon - purple, Canon - green) so you can quickly and easily determine if the discussion is about a Nikon Speedlight or a Canon Speedlite.

Sandwiched in between each of the images are one and two page educational segments that start with the fundamentals of flash, inverse square law, mastering distance, characteristics of light, comprehending the direction of bounce flash, and so much more.

The authors also cover mixing speedlights with studio strobes.

This book is for all levels of photographers and the images cover just about anything you might ever want to photograph, still life, portraiture, corporate, commercial, architectural, and sports.

We learn to talk by listening to others, we learn to walk by watching others, and "Speedlights & Speedlites" is a great educational opportunity for those who want to "walk & talk" small strobes.

About the Author

Luca Masini

Luca Masini is a Senior Software Engineer and Architect who started as a Game Developer for Commodore 64 (Football Manager) and Commodore Amiga (Ken il Guerriero); he soon switched to object-oriented programming and, from its inception in 1995, he was always attracted to the Java language.

He worked on this passion as a consultant for some major Italian banks, developing and integrating major software projects for which he has often taken on the technical leadership role. He adapted Java Enterprise in environments where COBOL was the flagship platform, converting them from mainframe-centric to distributed.

He then shifted his focus to open source, starting from Linux, and then enterprise frameworks, with which he was able to introduce concepts like IoC, ORM, and MVC with minimum impact. He was an early adopter of Spring, Hibernate, Struts, and a whole host of other technologies that in the long run have given his customers a technological advantage and because of which development costs have also lowered.

Lately, however, his attention has been completely directed towards the simplification and standardization of development with Java EE, and for this reason he's now working at the Information and Communications Technology department of a large Italian company to introduce advanced build tools (Maven and Continuous Integration), archetypes of projects, and Agile Development with plain standards.

Vincenzo Rinaldi was born in Milan, Italy, and continues to live and work there. Small book with not so much new 12c or Java EE 6 information

This small book shortly explains all the parts which are involved by the WebLogic Security Framework. It describes how to use the internal weblogic and an external LDAP server as authentication provider. Plus a maven example howto develop, deploy a web application which uses security. Another maven example howto develop or configure a custom provider. And the last chapter explains Microsoft Active Directory SSO with WebLogic. I Did not see many new 12c features and most of this information should also work on WebLogic 10.3. I liked the small part about programmatic security with WebLogic XACML provider. But I hoped to learn more about WebLogic 12c and Java EE 6 like the JASPIC,JACC specifications and how this works with WebLogic plus why they are limited compared to weblogic custom providers. The maven part is great for testing the examples but it does not add any value to this content.

Sidney Tarrow (Ph.D. Berkeley, 1965) is Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Government and Professor of Sociology at Cornell University. His recent books are Dynamics of Contention (with Doug McAdam and Charles Tilly), Contentious Europeans (with Doug Imig), Transnational Protest and Global Activism (co-edited with Donatella della Porta), The New Transnational Activism and Contentious Politics (with Charles Tilly). He is currently researching war, state-building and human rights.
