About the Author
Brad Gilmer is the Executive Director of the Advanced Authoring Format Association, a trade association charged with fostering interoperability in the rich media authoring environment. He was co-chair of the Pro-MPEG Forum's File Interchange Working Group on MXF and actively participated in the EBU/SMPTE Task Force. He is also President of Gilmer & Associates, Inc, a management and technology consulting company. Previously, Gilmer worked for 14 years at Turner Entertainment Networks.

Handbook of TV/Film Formats for IT-based Production

Brad's book (he is the editor and contributing author) is a complete introduction to file formats that are being used for TV/Film in place of and alongside traditional videotape/disk and film formats. These formats are the essential basis for an emerging file-based infrastructure for TV and film studios. The formats described in detail include AAF, MXF, GXF, ASF, DPX, and QuickTime; there is also extensive discussion about the role of metadata.
The contributing authors in this book have in fact themselves been instrumental in the creation and development of these formats; they describe in detail the current capabilities of these formats, but refer also to their potential (for example video content wrapped in a file with the associated rights management). This book is an important introduction and reference manual for engineers and anyone wanting to understand the new technology of production, postproduction, archiving and distribution.

Undoubtedly correct, dull as dishwater

Ever read the contents label on a bottle of household cleaner? Sorry to be so blunt, but this books is little more than laundry lists of metadata standards, couched in sterile prose. While I am sure it is a valuable document for simply placing this information in one, compact space, it has proven impossible to glean any useful information for daily application, due to its dearth of providing any practical, real-World associations in actual file interchanges between software packages, except in the most abstract way possible. I needed a book that would explain in some fashion, how XML and AAE functions in the real world of digital moving imaging applications, but was sorely disappointed in this book's inability to go beyond quoting endless, opaque parameters without making associations to practical function in actual media production beyond highly theoretical (and mundanely perfect) interfaces with generic applications. While I sympathize with the editor's dilemma of putting a human face on such a mundane subject, I expected much more than a reprint of standards documentation, written for engineers who, in all likelihood, already know this stuff. Again, valuable for its concatenation of standards, deadly dull and totally impractical as a primer for moving image technologists looking for practical explanations of the utilization of file interchange in a production environment.
