One of the hidden jewels of Texas, the Lone Star Hiking Trail is the only long-distance National Recreation Trail in the state. At 128 miles (including loop trails), it is also the state's longest continuously marked and maintained footpath. Located in the famed Big Thicket area in east Texas, the trail is well-suited for both short and long hikes (of up to 10 days), appealing to dayhikers, overnight backpackers and long-distance hikers. The LSHT lies between the major metro centers of Houston-Galveston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio--home to more than 8 million people just a 2-hour drive from the trail. The author, a Texas native, is an experienced long-distance hiker who has thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and many other nationally recognized long-distance trails throughout the U.S. This is the first guidebook to the trail and is officially endorsed and promoted by the Lone Star Hiking Trail Club.

LSHT Guidbook
By C. Olsen
Excellent resource for the LSHT hiker, extremely thorough. Recently used this book on a 4 day backpacking trip of the eastern half of the trail from four notch to the terminus.

Trail descriptions, landmarks and water sources were spot on. GPS locations for the parking lots also proved very helpful as some of the forest service roads wouldn't register in our car gps.

Out of date in regards to water sources.
By Jordan
Recently did an attempted thru-hike of the LST, and while this guide is excellent in every aspect and extremely handy, it is hopelessly out of date when it comes to a crucial aspect of hiking, and that is water sources. Due to the long drought in this part of Texas, even "permanent" water sources in this guide are bone dry. It's a great guide, but if you are planning a long hike on the LST you must do further research into water availability. The suggestions of areas for good camping are also out of date, as many of the "cleared" spots mentioned in this guide are now hopelessly overgrown. Overall a great guide, but it really could use an updated edition.

Excellent Guide
By Kindle Customer
Great book that reads really well.

Quite a bit of thought has been put into the guide so that it's equally valuable to the
occasional day hiker all the way up to a thru-hiker. The maps along with the
GPS coordinates and mile list descriptions are excellent.

This guide really takes the guess work out of some of the more difficult to follow sections of the LSHT.

Worth every penny.
