An Instinctive Look At Sound and Sound Editing. THE VIDEO EDITOR'S GUIDE TO SOUNDTRACK PRO: A Critical Review.
By Andre Lawrence
* Why buy another audio book? What's so special about this book?
** Highlights
*** Conclusion
* Books on sound editing, in my opinion, are never enough. And, great books on sound editing are even rarer. While books on editing the visuals are more or less a dime a dozen, typically you'd have the lion's share of those manuals barely touching the audio aspect. Any film editor will tell you, without great sound, no film will be purchased at a film festival. So, the essence of film editing is to have a good handle on visual AND audio editing.
This book focuses on Apple's Soundtrack Pro, a sound editing software that's a part of The Final Cut Studio suite. And, like Logic Pro, Soundtrack Pro is an audio editing software, but the chief difference is that Soundtrack Pro emphasizes the vocals as it relates to dialogue and Logic is primarily for instrumentation.
Several years, audio engineer par excellent, Jay Rose wrote two volumes of audio editing for film and video Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) Audio Postproduction for Film and Video, Second Edition: After-the-Shoot solutions, Professional Techniques, and Cookbook Recipes to Make Your Project Sound Better (DV Expert Series). They have become the benchmark for audio and film engineers. What makes his books on the subject required reading, I've also found in this book, THE VIDEO EDITOR'S GUIDE TO SOUNDTRACK PRO: is that the authors, Sam McGuire and David Liban, like Rose, take their time and give many and repeated examples of how sound is translated in various environments. And, like Rose, there's an emphasis on relying on instinct in decision-making as opposed to relying exclusively on a spectrum analyzer.
They discuss general terminology and they give practical advice on when to use certain kinds of audio effects, how to use the Soundtrack Pro's editing tools to analyze and manipulate, i.e. stretch, contract, compress tracks that appeal to the audio editor's vision for a particular moment.
** Highlights:
+ Chapter 2: What Is Audio Post?
+ Chapter 4: Basic Audio Editing
+ Chapter 5: Introduction to Dynamics (special tools in Soundtrack Pro)
+ Chapter 7: Spectral Tools
+ Chapter 8: Time Effects
+ Chapter 9: Mixing
+ Chapter 11: Acoustical Design and Configuration
+ Chapter 13: Scenarios and Practical Tutorials
*** This is a great resource and one to own if you have (or are considering buying) the Final Cut Studio.

A good guide to Soundtrack Pro
By Shevi
This review was written by my husband, who is a professional, freelance, network TV soundman. He has worked on shows like Good Morning America, Today, the CBS Evening News, Nightline, and many more:
Lately producers have been trying to save money by expecting the cameraman to record the audio as well as the video. This is okay for some things, but very often, the lack of a soundman leads to an unusable audio track. Editors are expected to fix problems that could have been avoided altogether, if a professional soundman had been hired.
This book can help editors use Soundtrack Pro make the best of a bad situation. It can also help editors turn good audio into something great.
In the past, I've used Protools, which is similar to Soundtrack Pro. The concept of preparing audio tracks for mixing is the same for both programs. I found that the main difference between the two programs is in the names used to describe the different functions and where these functions are located inside the programs.
The book includes anecdotes that tell how the authors used particular functions to accomplish different tasks, which livens up this well-written tech book.
The book is specifically written for FCP (Final Cut Pro) video editors who have found themselves to be, due to a small budget, the only ones dealing with audio and trying to make a perfect soundtrack from nothing. Soundtrack Pro is part of the Final Cut package, but this does not mean that an editor will automatically acclimate to it. The book slowly and clearly shows you how to get a better result from the audio soundtrack of a video. An accompanying DVD gives short video clip examples to visually explain parts of the book that would be hard to understand otherwise.
The authors clearly know the program well and have done a good job explaining it to the reader.

A good overall guide for Soundtrack Pro users
By Christina Paul
Being someone who is relatively new to using Sountrack Pro in conjunction with Final Cut Pro, "The Video Editor's Guide to Soundtrack Pro" by Sam McGuire and David Liban was a welcome tool to help me through the stickier bits. The authors give a good run down on how thigns are traditionally done in Hollywood as for audio editing and outside of it in smaller, one or two many shops as well. The audio workflows really helped me make a better end product in my edits in Final Cut Pro in post production. The authors go through it step by step, and the book is written to make it fairly fast and easy to find answers to questions. Also, one thing that often plagues students is how to keep things organized.
This book would be ideal for any advanced audio or film/TV college level course, and it definitely reads like a textbook. Of all the post production portions, I am least fond of the audio process. This particular book made it easier, and in many cases gave several options on how to solve issues or potential issues in post.
