Porn for studio nerds
By Brian Connors
I'm not sure "tips" is adequate to describe what this book is about. This book is an in-depth examination of how the mixing process works, what different pieces and types of equipment do, and how to make things sound like they're supposed to when they don't. You can't underestimate the value of a good ear, but the nice thing about having access to all this information is that you can get a lot more consistency to your results that way, just like in science and cooking.
The book is largely organized by effects, interestingly enough, with a chapter each on all the major ones (reverb, delay, compression, distortion, etc), so it's probably useful for more than just studio work (especially if you're a guitarist or vocalist with a complex signal chain between your instrument or mic and the board). It's profusely illustrated with spectral graphs and flowcharts, as well as an extended playlist in Appendix D showing exactly what to look for in a great number of well-known songs. (Too bad the licensing for a CD or DVD of the playlist would probably be ridiculously expensive...) Interestingly, the book is software agnostic, not mentioning big players like ProTools, Logic, or Audacity in favor of general principle discussion; this certainly is an effective way of dealing with the problem of platform dependence, though it does require you to be reasonably familiar with your tools on a basic level. I'm not inclined to count this as a bad thing.
On the whole, you don't need this to be a good audio engineer, but let's be honest -- if you make a point to study this material, you've got a better than average shot at being a great one.

He teaches strategies not recipes!
By Bruno
I have been a audio engineer (in part) professionally for 10 years and as a hobby for almost 20 years now. I do audio work (voice/music) in my job as one of my many hats that I wear as a computer animator. I also do music creation and recording as a hobby with several of my friends during my spare time. I am 100% self taught in regards to my audio knowledge...However, the problem with this is it tends to have a a Swiss cheese effect in my overall ability.
Everything discussed in this book is something I have a lot of experience with, but it's the sum of all it's parts when it comes together that makes the final track. I still lack the refined ability of making "perfect" final mix downs. It truly is an art form that can take many many years to master and it is way beyond just buying expensive equipment and getting your levels all balanced. It always seems like I am missing crucial bits of information to get my tracks perfect. I could tell within 30 minutes of going through this book it would be capable of taking me much further to that goal then every before.
I suppose I fell into the groove of looking for recipes for plugin chains for my individual tracks and final mixdowns. I am always looking for the plug and play magic that will just step my game up and it never comes! You certainly can find recipes if you dig enough to any settings you want given certain circumstances. However, I was shocked and edified when I read the concept of this book is not to teach recipes but teach strategies since no 2 situations are the same! Therefore, recipes are useless since every track and recording is unique. He is absolutely right! I am officially done with the recipes 100% I suppose I do this already to an extent.. I use the recipe and tweak it a tiny bit to my ear. I think the problem is the recipes may be constraining me to far when I should be exploring way beyond them sometimes.
This book covers literally every key plugin/effect you will be dealing with in a final mix.
EQ, Compressor/Limiter, Expansion/Gating, DeSSers, Delay, Reverb, etc. He presents really good techniques and approaches for every single thing here. When to use it, where to use it and why.
Lastly, he does have a companion website that goes along with this book and provides sample files and example tracks. I especially like the addition at the end of the book that outlines dozens of popular tracks over the years that highlight keep audio engineer tricks. It helps to bring the techniques back to the real work for reference.
I will be referencing this book for a long time. It will, without a doubt, be the key that I need to fill in all my blanks as an audio engineer. I could easily see this book even being helpful to someone who goes to school for audio engineering as well... being that it covers every single key principle of mix downs. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to learn from scratch or polish up your skills as a semi pro or amateur.
Have fun making tracks!

Great Guide
By Amazon Customer
This is an introduction to audio mixing for beginning sound engineers. Case teaches sound recording at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and writes about audio engineering. In this book, he explains the steps involved in making mixes that work. Topics covered in the book include mix-room setup, balance, equalization, distortion, compression and limiting, expansion and gating, delay, pitch shift, and reverb. Case stays away from assuming that readers will be using any specific technology or software, so instead of giving software-specific instructions, he discusses the bigger picture of why you might want to use a given technique and what its acoustic effects will be. This separation from specific technologies ensures that the material in the text will not be instantly outdated with the next software release but will be useful for years to come. The book is amply illustrated with tables and diagrams to make technical points clear. End material includes lengthy appendices on processing, musical acoustics, automation, and listening.
I found this book easy to understand and thorough in its treatment. The text can be a bit dry sometimes, but it's not meant to be light reading. It is filled with information and excellent advice for creating and improving your mixes. It's a great reference that you can read once, or return to again and again as you hone your skills. In general, Case's explanations about the different available alternatives and ways to get the sound you are looking for are easy to follow and informative. Case's summary of balance, for example, is a great way to start when approaching a mix for the first time: "The pop music vocal and the snare sit pretty loud in the mix, dead center. Kick and bass are also in the center, likely at a lower level. The other pieces of the arrangement fill in the underneath and around these critical tracks. Guitars and keys must not mask the vocals or harm the intelligibility of the lyrics. The musical role of each and every track must be understood musically and the mix accordingly, so that elements playing together blend or achieve counterpoint as needed." If you can get that far with your mix, the rest is gravy, and Case provides plenty of advice on what kind of gravy to add and how in order to create mixes that stand out.
