Xenophon's Anabasis, or The Expedition of Cyrus, is one of the most exciting historical narratives--as well as the most important autobiographical work--to have survived from ancient Greece. It tells the story of Cyrus, a young and charismatic Persian prince, who in 401 BC enlisted more than ten thousand Greek mercenaries in an attempt to seize the vast Persian empire for himself. Cyrus was killed in a great battle, most of the Greek commanders subsequently fell victim to treachery, and an Athenian aristocrat by the name of Xenophon found himself in the unexpected position of taking charge and leading the Greeks from the vicinity of Babylon in modern Iraq back to the Greek cities in Turkey. This book both places the Anabasis in its historical and literary context and, by employing a variety of critical methods, opens up for the reader different ways of interpreting its major themes. Interrelated chapters investigate Xenophon's self-representation as a model leader, his possible didactic and apologetic purposes for writing, the generic expectations of his contemporary audience, the factual accuracy of the Anabasis, and the ways in which the gods are depicted as intervening in human affairs. This book unveils the literary artistry and narrative strategies that have gone into shaping one of the greatest survival stories of all time.

Michael Flower's prose are both eloquent and applicable to the common reader and expert alike. This is an insightful and entertaining read - thoroughly original and a much needed addition to existing scholarship.

The Original Military Thriller

I know it is difficult to believe, but for anyone with as little as an iota of interest in History, this is actually a FUN read.

Picture this: you are a Greek mercenary infantryman. Back then, it was like belonging to SAS, or SpetzNaz, or SEAL Team 6.... You are hired by Persians (yes BY Persians) to fight other Persians. And then you are betrayed. And your force is literally decapitated (your commanders are assassinated) by the enemy. And you are stranded about 1000 klicks (kilometers)or more from your home base and even if you make it out of the territory directly controlled by the Persians, you are still surrounded by the hostiles. Supply lines -- zero. Logistical support -- none. Intelligence/tactical info -- you are vaguely aware that you need to make your way North-West.

Good luck and may the Gods smile upon you. Oh, almost forgot to mention it -- it is 5th century. That is 5th century B.C. !! Good luck....

Companion book only

I am completely new to classical literature and this story caught my eye. This seems to be a companion book on the story, but from what I can see of the book, it does not include the story itself. I have only read the first few pages and have already learned a great deal about it so it is very much worth buying. I was just disappointed that a fully translated story was not included and the description of the book did not state that.

People are one of my favorite subjects for photography, whether I've captured their essence in a studio or out in the streets. In this book, I'm sharing everything I've learned about photographing people, step by step. It doesn't matter if you're not that self-confident as a photographer; I'll take you right through from the basics to the nitty-gritty of getting portraits that dazzle, amaze, and inspire.

If I could, I'd love to teach you everything I've learned over the years in person. It turns out, however, that if I want to teach photography to 50,000 people, writing a book is a teensy-weensy bit more efficient. Basic, very lttle hard detail

I found this book far too basic for my needs, beginning with what essentailly amounts to an overview of digital photography and then covering the essentials of portaiture. There was not much detail in the parts specifically about photographing people - maybe a good, broad introduction to a topic but then very little detail beyond the basics. Also, with just a few exceptions there was NO information about specific photos (e.g., lens used, exposure settings, etc.). This should be standard in any photography book that purports to be instructional in nature.) For more detailed books, I would recommend Beyond Portraiture: Creative People Photography or Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies (the latter may be overwhelming to beginning photographers.)

"Photographing People", A Must Have!

Refreshing! Helps your average person to comprehend photography to depths beyond just fundamentals without getting lost in technical details, which can often loose a great portion or your audience.
Clear, Simplistic and easy to follow. Formatted so that anyone can quickly reference their desired question by directly jumping right to it.
Covers a wide range of photography tools ranging from equipment choice, shooting the basics, to subject choice and lighting. Describes to your average person how to creatively utilize your tools for given effects and lighting conditions.
Of particular interest was the section that discussed and compared the difference between film to digital.
I liked the "key points" in each chapter, and the "sticky notes" that really help you "Focus" On Photographing People. Well done!

The ABC's of Basic Portrait Photography

It's amazing that even after an individual has spent 50 years practicing photography that there aren't that many new techniques being used to photograph people.
The basic rules are still the same for film and digital photography. Digital photography has greatly improved a photographer's chances of getting a correct exposure and providing dozens of ways of saving a poorly executed picture, that if it had been done using a film negative, probably would have been lost. PhotoShop has made it possible to work miracles with images long after they have been taken. PhotoShop has opened whole new frontiers of special effects photography.
This book carefully explains the basics without getting into too much complicated detail. The rules of basic composition are examined as is very basic lighting and environmental photographs where the subject is set in real locations and not just against a studio background. The author also suggests breaking the basic rules if the change produces a more interesting image. Filling up the viewfinder by getting close to the subject is stressed and the importance of always having the eyes of the subject in focus is also emphasized. Simplicity is the order of the day. He recommends not spending too much money on camera bodies and instead investing in various lenses. One of the best illustrations in the book in the book is on the bottom of page 43 and has the caption "A slow shutter speed can give a feeling of movement, like in this photo of a belly dancer in action." The actual picture doesn't look like it was even made on this planet. It's more of pattern photo that seems to include shooting stars. It's a very successful photo even if it shows no earthly resemblance to a belly dancer. Most of the illustrations in the book aren't very inspiring, but they are functional often showing "what not to do." Seeing too many examples of mistakes gets old in a hurry. It would be nice if that tendency could be avoided by including many more really successful photos such as the "unearthly belly dancer."
The layout is easy to understand with handwritten notes with arrows pointing out important points and yellow "post it" notes all over the double-page spreads. It does, however, give a bit of a cluttered, unfinished appearance to the book.
Once a photographer gets some experience, most of this kind of basic information becomes second nature and even discussing technique is usually avoided by experienced photographers unless the techniques used are highly unusual and difficult to do successfully. This book will help the beginner reach the point where techniques are taken for granted. It's not a bad primer. Naturally, the author strongly recommends looking at the work of other photographers wherever and whenever possible and suggests everyone try some street shooting since many of the most famous photographers in history are from that genre. The author also suggests that the new photographer show his or her own work so that they can gain helpful tips and suggestions on how to improve the artwork. He provides some websites to help with that process.

Excellent resource to inform and inspire

Can the promotion of social entrepreneurship help change the world for the better? Ruth Shapiro's book has something for everyone who is struggling with this question. I loved this edited volume format. It provides a real variety of first-hand accounts (ranging from personal start-up stories to thought-provoking questions about future directions) shared by leading practitioners, investors, thinkers and advocates in the field. The book is a wonderful resource for those of us trying to stay inspired and informed about the latest thinking on how to incentivize social problem solving.

Classic. Essential. Practical.

There are a lot of great books on the more artistic and unquantifiable aspects of motion picture editing (for example, Michael Ondaatje's Conversations with Walter Murch), but this is one of the few books to lay out the basics. Everyone who wants to edit motion pictures, whether it's home videos using iMovie or feature films using Avid or even (especially) actually cutting film should know what this book has to teach. It's really the only book for the novice editor worth reading. Just buy it.

The best book ever written on film editing

Working in film and video for over 15 years, this was the first book I read when starting my career. I have bought several copies over the years for new shooters and editors. It really is that good.

Whether you're a novice or a seasoned veteran, this is a MUST READ. This short book is packed with solid information that should be required reading in any film school. Look, there are a few basic rules that all editors have been following since the silent film era. You've got to know the fundamentals.

Clear and authoritative guide to the principles and practices of film editing

This is one of the classic texts on the principles and practices of modern film editing. While it was written nearly thirty years ago and refers occasionally to the techniques of linear editing on actual film, its summary of the rules of good editing remains as relevant today as ever, even for filmmakers who will only ever edit video on their computers. Editing is where the film is brought to life and Dmytryk outlines in a very clear and engaging way the basic considerations that allow that to take place. The author was not only a major filmmaker but a master teacher, and it shows in both the precision and clarity of his explanations.

What makes the guide as fresh today as when it appeared is that it is primarily not about technical considerations but about how an editor has to think in order to construct seamless and engaging scenes that are true to the overall story of a film. At the same time this thinking is given a practical application. The focus is on why rather than how, but it goes much further in explaining the basics of what to do when editing and how to put together a scene than many other books out there.

Dmytryk makes a distinction between a cutter and an editor, and cutting is merely competence with the equipment of film editing, whether it is a moviola or Final Cut Pro. Editing is always thinking, and is as creative in its approach to the film as shot as directing is creative in its approach to the film as written. Subtle variations in editing can change completely the tone or mood of a film. Dmytryk illustrates his points with several examples from major films he directed or edited (e.g. The Caine Mutiny, Murder, My Sweet and many more). Dmytryk is a master of his craft and is generous in his description of what it takes to pursue this mastery. This little book is an indispensible part of any filmmaker or film lover's library.

Another great volume of insight

[[VIDEOID:mo3C6LVXVWOTVG]]Digital Art Masters: Volume 5 is another great compilation of top quality art and insightful tutorials. If you have earlier volumes, you pretty much expected that. I've a wonderful time going through this thick 288-page book.

This time, art is categorised into 5 sections: Sci-Fi, Scene, Fantasy, Character and Cartoon. As usual, you see work created from all sorts of medium (2D & 3D), across a variety of art genre gravitating towards concept art. There are 3D modeling on different subjects, digital and background painting and many more.

The featured illustrations and galleries are beautiful and detailed. I can't begin to imagine the amount of time spent to create some of these inspiring illustrations, especially so when some of them are just personal projects.

There's plenty to learn from as there are to see. The artists share their techniques as they go through their process of creating the featured illustrations. The book is filled with all sorts of tips, ranging from matte painting, scene composition to even portrait drawing.

Volume 5 is a great addition. Highly recommended to 3D modelers, digital painting artists and art lovers.

DAM keeps getting better every year

I've been able to hold each volume (since Vol.2) in my hands and can honestly say 3D Total makes a better volume every year.
Each one holds a unique approach to showcase masterpieces from artists all over the world which to say the least is a must have for every digital artist or graphic lover, not only by the instruction you get from the creators of such pieces (let me clarify these are not detailed how-to instructions) but by the process they follow or the inspiration they crave from many different aspects from work or life.

What I particularly liked about this Volume is the section division by Characters, Sci Fi, etc. These is a better arrangement overall and I think it will be a standard for future Volumes. Also as a suggestion, I would love to have a Q&A section to be able to share what many enthusiasts, amateurs and professionals alike might wonder, ask or share with each other.

Overall a great buy!

This book in it's seventh series now has allowed 3D Total to publish some of the best artists work from across the world, but also they've managed to be consistent throughout the series to create a book with some of the very best artworks you're ever likely to see.

Within these pages, the Digital Art Masters Vol 7 delivers the best 2D & 3D artists from around the world, as in previous books in this series there's plenty of differing subject matter to both amaze & inform. With insights from the worlds top leading artists, there's tips, tricks & tutorials into creating your own artworks with similar themes it's truly inspiring stuff which is sure to get your own artistic juices flowing.

If you are a beginner into the world of digital art or even a seasoned professional this book more than delivers, the majority of the artists in this book are from well known film/video-game companies whereas others are just incredibly talented hobbyists.

Whether you have the previous books in this series or not it's the kind of publication that can add glamour to anyone's living room table, this book is designed to be enjoyed as well as being informative for budding artists both new & old, the full colour pages are printed on beautiful glossy paper and feel good to flick through, this is without doubt an excellent publication & a must have for collectors of the series or indeed lover's of art, purchase your copy as soon as you can you won't be disappointed
