A must read if you use Motion...

My interest in this book was initially created by another Motion guru, Mark Spencer. It was upon his recommendation that I purchased this book. I was not disappointed. This is a "cookbook" of sorts, enabling you to see Motion from a perspective you may not have previously seen. Patrick Sheffield is a creative genius who has graciously decided to share his knowledge through a series of "recipes" in each chapter. He has also included the .motn files for each to get you going just that much faster. This book does assume that you have a working knowledge of Motion. If you do not, I suggest you also purchase Apple Pro Training Series: Motion 4. I am currently working on a music video and have used variations of his "recipes" in my Final Cut "kitchen". This book helps you to find the creative possibilities of a really powerful piece of software. If you use Motion, you need this book.

If you are like most people and don't have the luxury of sitting beside a genius whom you can bounce ideas off of, this book is for you. Patrick Sheffield is a genius, and he is -- for all intents and purposes -- sharing his bag of tricks with you. And it's an awesome bag.

As Mr. Sheffield -- a visionary thinker who came into the business at the height of the music video era -- states in the introduction, this is a 'cookbook' of recipes to give you a creative jumpstart. Concepts that should be understood by a working motion graphics artist are also covered, spanning material from blend modes to tips on how to best deal with client demands. (It is NOT a primer on the software, however, and some familiarity with Apple's Motion, part of Final Cut Studio, is hoped for.)

There is something for every type of motion graphic need: creative text effects, unique looks for video, animation techniques, backgrounds, 3D camerawork and, in various forms, transitional effects (stuff like breaking up an image into particles and reconstituting it). Project files (for Motion 3 mostly, some for version 4) are included on a CD. Many tutorials even contain a Hot Tip or two (ways to spice up the recipe to make them more unique and better suited to your production).

This is THE book I've been searching for since I started using Motion. Thanks to Mr. Sheffield, I've got serious mojo now.

About the Author

Mike Southon is a highly successful serial entrepreneur. In the 1980s, he co-founded The Instruction Set and helped make it Europe’s leading open systems consultancy and training business, prior to selling the company to what is now Cap Gemini Ernst &Young in 1989. In the 1990s he worked with 17 start-ups, two of which, RiverSoft and Micromuse, subsequently went public.

Mike is now a leading speaker and mentor on entrepreneurship and sales, and has a weekly column, ‘My Business’ in the Weekend Financial Times. He is a Visiting Fellow in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at London South Bank University and has made frequent appearances on television and radio.

In this book one of the founders of modern test theory concisely describes many of the most important issues facing psychologists today. Even two decades later, it is still quite applicable. The only negative thing I can think to say is that it is quite concise, using equations in preference to lengthy prose, and yet leaves out proofs. Also, multidimensional and polytomous models and not described.

About the Author
Caroline Bartel is an assistant professor of Organizational Behavior at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her master's and Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the informal and interactive processes through which individuals and groups coordinate their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors at work. One stream of her current work focuses on social identity processes, including the ways in which identity and status are negotiated in social interactions and how these processes affect behavior that promotes coordinated action.
Steven Blader is an assistant professor of Management and Organizations at the Stern School of Business, New York University. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from New York University. His research aims to understand the impact of employee's social and relational concerns in the work place. In particular, his work focuses on understanding how people assess their social standing in their work organizations, and the influence of those judgments on their judgments and behavior. He is currently investigating these issues by examining employee perceptions of the fairness they experience at work, the role of status in organizational life, and the extent to which work organizations constitute an important part of how people think and feel about themselves.
Amy Wrzesniewski is an associate professor of Organizational Behavior at the Yale School of Management, where she studies the meaning of work and teaches courses on careers and on teams in organizations. She received her master's and Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology at the University of Michigan. Herresearch focuses on how people make meaning of their work in difficult contexts (e.g., stigmatized occupations, virtual work, absence of work), and the experience of work as a job, career, or calling. Her current research involves studying how employees shape their interactions and relationships with others in the workplace to change both their work identity and the meaning of the job.

A Classic

There is no better book that I have read on the theory and practice of theatre. As Peter Brook says in the preface, "Grotowski is unique. Why? Because no-one else in the world, to my knowledge, no-one since Stanislavsky, has investigated the nature of acting, its phenomenon, its meaning, the nature and science of its mental-physical-emotional processes as deeply and completely as Grotowski."
Grotowski argues effectively that the split of the stage and the screen necessitates that the stage redefine its focus. The screen with its higher budget and countless retakes will always beat the stage in richness. So, Grotowski posits "If it [the stage] cannot be richer than the cinema, then let it be poor." The rest of the book illustrates what such a poor theatre means in practice. Brilliant.

Beauty in Poverty and Performance

Comprehending this book is no small feat. Sure, you start with the premise that competing with the technical spectacle of movies and TV is a fruitless pursuit. That's not difficult. Neither is the idea of embracing poverty in theatre and making the human being the only center of performance. That's dead easy. Spare costumes, little or no makeup, no sound effects, as few light effects as possible. Who can argue with that?
But this doesn't mean everybody can embrace Grotowski's vision of Poor Theatre. His is one that involves stripping away all preconceived notions of theatre from the early Modern period on. This will never fly in commercial theatre, dependent as it is on technology, nor will it satisfy many recent playwrights, who depend on technical do-funnies to make their shows work.
Grotowski also takes a funny view of plays, playwrights, and theoreticians who don't agree with him. Among other things, he considers playwrights as hired talent and plays as essentially malleable. He also suggests that the only way the writings of Artaud are useful in theatre is if they are taken elementally rather than globally - a position sure not to sit well with many avant-garde directors.
Because this book isn't a straight-ahead statement of principles, ideas, and practices, it yields its secrets only with difficulty. Parts of it aren't even written by Grotowski, but are interviews by other authors, or even observations that don't include quotes from the man himself. It was basically compiled to provide an overview of the ideas and products of the Polish Laboratory Theatre up to that time, and it encourages experiment and development by the reader.
This isn't to say that it isn't actually useful. There are exercises for actors; there are statements of theory for directors; there are even sketches, diagrams, and photos for designers. However, expect to wrestle with this book if you're going to unlock its secrets. Once you elect to start down this path, you have a long row to hoe

"Towards A Poor Theatre" by Jerzy Grotowski is probably the most important book written on acting since Stainslavsky's three famous character books. There is so little known about Grotowski and many people have tried to fake his work and people need to read the man's original words. Grotowski's vision of theatre has had the greatest effect on me more than any other person in theatre. He saw acting as a Holy experience where both the actor and spectator were transformed after the performance. Grotowski expanded from where Stainslavsky left off and drew his ideas everywhere from modern art to religious rituals to primitive theatre. Any one interested in theatre must read this book somehow and be changed forever like I have.

About the Author
Emma Restall Orr (aka Bobcat) is one of the most well-known Druids worldwide. She worked for the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids, was Joint Chief of the British Druid Order for nearly ten years, and in 2002 created the international Druid Network. She is a practising priest and teacher, celebrated for her uncompromising views on ethics, environmentalism and personal responsibility. This "Hag" is bewitching

This book, "Kissing the Hag" is one of the best books I have read in years. It tells the truth of the "Hag" in all women, and the word "Hag" is not a bad word for women. It means strength, change, renewal & power. It help explain how we can use this power,good & bad. i wish I had this book years ago. It is for women of all ages.

Powerful and Upsetting

This is an excellent book. It discusses all the dirty, messy parts of being a woman, the ones we try to pretend aren't there.

Feminist, pagan and all around honest, I intend to insist that my daughters read this. I just wish I'd had it to read it 30 years ago.

About the Author
Elizabeth Allen is a principal lecturer in Imaging Science at the University of Westminster. She specialises in digital imaging systems and processes and image quality and has been the course leader of the BSc Photography and Digital Imaging since 2005. Her work has been presented at a number of symposia and has been published in related journals. She received the Selwyn Award from the Royal Photographic Society in 2005 and is currently working towards a PhD in imaging science. She is also a contributing author in the 7th and 8th editions of Langford's Advanced Photography.
Sophie Triantaphillidou is a principal lecturer and director of the Imaging Technology Research Group at the University of Westminster. She received the Selwyn Award from the Royal Photographic Society and her PhD in imaging science in 2001. She specializes in image quality, image archiving and color imaging. She has been the chair of the Imaging Science Group of The Royal Photographic Society since 2007 and member of a number of conference program committees related to imaging science. She has published numerous research papers and is a contributing author in the 7th and 8th editions of Langford's Advanced Photography.

Excellent book, but do not buy the Kindle edition

This is the newest version of the classic Ilford Manual of Photography line, and is substantially updated over the previous version to include more coverage of digital photography.

This is an excellent book giving a detailed and technical look at all aspects of photography including lenses, optics, lighting, sensors and digital processing. The book is well written, and complex topics are clearly explained. All major topics in technical photography are covered at a reasonable depth. It is fairly technical with a lot of math in some places. The math is actually useful, not just there to impress.

If you want to move away from general photography books and get a feel for what's under the hood, so to speak, then this is a great book. Its the best single source for the technical side of photography that I know of.

A word of warning: the Kindle edition has very poor quality. Color is non-existent or poorly rendered, and the equations are barely readable. Many of the graphs are also poor quality. This is on a PC Kindle, on a regular handheld Kindle it would be even worse. I returned the Kindle book for a refund and will buy the print version. The quality of the print version is very good.

Authors - thanks for writing such a great book, but you should insist that Amazon improve the quality of your Kindle book.

Amazon - Kindle books are a great idea, but technical books in Kindle format are often very low quality. You should aim for at least PDF quality.

I highly recommend anyone involved in digital cameras to read this book

This book is intended for those wanting a clear technical overview of all aspects of digital cameras. It starts with the topic of Light Theory, which is normally viewed as a complicated subject. The topic is well written and readily understandable. The same is true for all other topics. The range of topics including the human visual system, color science, optics, Fourier analysis, image sensors, system processing blocks within the camera system, displays, and introduction to spatial image processing. It is ideal for engineers interested in any aspect of digital cameras from optics, sensors, to algorithm development. I highly recommend anyone involved in digital cameras to read this book. It serves as introduction for those starting their career and a reference for those involved in developing any aspect of digital cameras.

It may not be suitable for every photographer, and surely not suitable for starters.
However, it is one of the best photography text book, reference book in the world.
Any serious professional photographer, and photography teacher should have one on their bookshelves.

If you have interest in film photography, then I think you may need to buy the previous version also.

About the Author

Geoff Reiss is Senior Architect with Program Management Group plc. He has extensive experience in the construction industry and has grown into the project management specialism over a varied career.

Paul Rayner After an early career with IBM in Australia Paul Rayner began a lifelong interest in the best ways of managing large scale corporate projects. He was a Commercial Projects Manager for Cybernet Timesharing in the 70’s, and principle of Great Northern Computer Services. After gaining his MBA he joined Logica plc as a Management Consultant, where he worked until his retirement in 2011. He chaired the Association for Project Management’s Programme Management Group, wrote the APM Introduction to Programme Management, and co-authored the Gower Handbook of Programme Management (2006).

He worked extraordinarily hard to improve approaches to portfolio and programme management, cheerfully giving his time to speak at events throughout the world. He was also a committed family man who took great pride in supporting the achievements of his three children. When he knew he was dying of cancer, he was determined to finish Portfolio and Programme Management Demystified, which he wanted to dedicate to them. He died, aged 64, in August 2011.

Donnie MacNicol Utilising his extensive PM experience across multiple industries Donnie leads consultancy, training, facilitation and mentoring assignments for global companies and government departments in developing project and programme leadership. Donnie chaired the Association for Project Management People Specific Interest Group for 10 years to 2011, is a Visiting Fellow at Kingston Business School, an individual member of the Acumen7 professional network and Partner at Synatus.

One of two recommended books on Program Management

Would Buy Again. One of two recommended books on Program Management, the other is Program Management (Fundamentals of Project Management) Michel Thiry. I really find it annoying that you have to keep typing until you have twenty five words in these reviews. I would be inclined to fill out mofe if they would take off this requirement.
