Gaining Daylight: Life on Two Islands (The Alaska Literary Series), by Sara Loewen

For many the idea of living off the land is a romantic notion left to stories of olden days or wistful dreams at the office. But for Sara Loewen it becomes her way of life each summer as her family settles into their remote cabin on Uyak Bay for the height of salmon season. With this connection to thousands of years of fishing and gathering at its core, Gaining Daylight explores what it means to balance lives on two islands, living within both an ancient way of life and the modern world. Her personal essays integrate natural and island history with her experiences of fishing and family life, as well as the challenges of living at the northern edge of the Pacific.

Loewen’s writing is richly descriptive; readers can almost feel heat from wood stoves, smell smoking salmon, and spot the ways the ocean blues change with the season. With honesty and humor, Loewen easily draws readers into her world, sharing the rewards of subsistence living and the peace brought by miles of crisp solitude.

From Booklist
Alaskan Loewen waxes eloquent about life in a fishing family on Kodiak Island. The choice of a seasonal existence, spending summers on nearby Amook (“an island the size of Manhattan, population twelve”) in pursuit of salmon, was thrust upon her when she fell in love, and her embrace of this life elevates Gaining Daylight far above reality-show fare about the Last Frontier. Exploring the region’s history, she writes about Russian traders and Alutiiq whalers with deep appreciation, forming a literary sweep from the view out her window to the centuries-old fishing tradition to the legacy of Alexander Baranov, a late-nineteenth-century manager of the Kodiak settlement, who, Loewen notes, has faded into obscurity like so many, “even as we live on streets bearing their names.” This poetic view of the past is woven into her consideration of Amook as a place where the “simple life could also be called the time-consuming life.” With quiet grace, Lowen writes of her children, marriage, and home and her place within it. More pragmatic than romantic, this is what life in Alaska is really about. --Colleen Mondor

Review
Winner, Creative Nonfiction (WILLA Literary Award)

"Loewen's essays are exquisite slices of life . . . this solemn, spare book is an intimate and loving look at a life that very few people live."  (starred review Publishers Weekly)

"With quiet grace, Lowen writes of her children, marriage, and home and her place within it. More pragmatic than romantic, this is what life in Alaska is really about." (Booklist)

“[Gaining Daylight] is a wonderful debut that deftly spans Loewen’s own inner and Alaskan geographies with a rare intimacy, elegance, and steadfastness. Like the tides on Uyak Bay, the essays move with a certain rightness and loveliness, a definite rhythm—and so we are moved by them.” (Simmons B. Buntin Terrain.org)

"Here’s to a fresh new northern voice. Sara Loewen’s brilliant collection is like a seafood feast; instead of salmon, cod, and seaweed salad, we’re treated to stories of growing up in the freedom of a Kodiak Island village, summers at a remote fishing site, mothering boys at the edge of the sea, and various historical events that shaped life on the islands Loewen knows as home. Loewen’s writing is smart, honest, and gorgeously lyrical. Like fish scales stuck to rubber boots, these stories will last as reminders of the importance of place, family, and all that anchors us." (Nancy Lord, former Alaska Writer Laureate and author of Fishcamp, Beluga Days, and Early Warming)

"Reading Sara Loewen’s memoir, Gaining Daylight: Life on Two Islands, you will learn a lot about Kodiak, Alaska, past and present, but mostly, you will be spending time with a bright, funny, observant, lifelong Alaskan, a young mother married to a fisherman. Sara has a story to tell, and she does it so well you won’t realize until you are done with Gaining Daylight how much she has taught you about living a good life, no matter which island you call home." (Heather Lende, author of Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs and If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name)

"These essays are about what’s universal in human experience: friendship, marriage, community, questions of one’s place and purpose in life, how raising children alters a woman’s sense of identity. At the same time, they depict the possibility of an expanded identity in a place where a family works together to make a living from the sea. Her powerful yet quiet, humble and eloquent voice guides a reader, whether it be an Alaskan reader, or a reader in New York City, through a foreign landscape into familiar inner terrain." (Eva Sau litis, author of Leaving Resurrection, Many Ways to Say It, and Into Great Silence)

a delightful read from a fresh Alaskan voice
By Mary L.
This new Alaskan book deserves a firm place on your bookshelf, after a delightful, dedicated read. Coming from small communities (Amook Island, population 12!), it's amazing that Sara Loewen is able to write with such honesty and clarity about the difficulties of making a living, raising kids, living in a close-knit community, and finding a way to fit in to her husband's commercial fishing lifestyle. While Loewen's essays are focused on her home town in coastal Alaska, they also range far and wide into Russian history, the life of a glamorous WWII OSU performer, and even beyond, into the daily trials and tribulations that often face us all. I can't wait until more of these are in stock to pass on to other avid readers who will welcome the temporary trip to Loewen's Alaska.

Inquisitive Voice, Strong Heart
By Erin D. Harrington
I loved this book. Sara Loewen's voice is inquisitive, loving, wry, and true. Her stories about her life between her family's remote fishsite and her home "in town" are captivating. I found myself nosed into the book in the middle of busy days and tired evenings, oblivious to everything around me. Sara writes about gritty things (living very close to nature, learning to be a mariner by her own rights, raising two boys in a very remote setting), but her voice is always gentle, inquisitive and kind. I found myself smiling outright as I moved from chapter to chapter, lost in the imagery and the storytelling. A strong recommend!!!

Closeness to Place
By Anjuli Grantham
This book is something special. It's about the intimate geographies of place- place both as a spot where one can stand, and place as in the inside terrain of heart and head-space. Sara Loewen traces several places, and interweaves the narrative in such a way that it's like being immersed in layers of history, where the words underneath lend context and continuity to that which is being experienced today. Place one: Amook Island, rural Alaska- home for half a year for Loewen, her commercial fisherman husband, and her young boys. Place two: Kodiak, Alaska, home to Russian colonizers, drunken bootleggers, and pin-up-smitten WWII servicemen. Place three: the soul of a young mother, simultaneously doubtful and confident in her ability to make a place in this world for her family. In the end, this book is an ode to home, and the history and present of these places that she loves. Places that readers will come to love through her words.
