Another Disappointing 3DS Max Book - Interested in Games, buy something else

As has become the norm for official 3DS Max books - this one is lacking as much as its predecessors. I continue to wish that Autodesk would actually let the people who produce the Maya books talk to the 3DS max authors. This book is another one of those teases. Lots of cool pictures of one video game, but the character on the cover is only talked about in the bonus DVD - why they only published 1/2 the book and put the other 1/2 on a DVD is a mystery to me.

What is does contain. The generic how to use basic tools which takes up about 1/3 of the book. Then some very rudimentary projects which I think would insult my students if I were to use this as the textbook for my class. Throughout the book there are these awesome pictures, but little if any direct information about how to make any of them - most of it is window dressing as if the assumption is is that some newbie who knows nothing about Game Art is going to look through the book and assume that because there are cool pictures that the book will someone provide instruction on how to make all these cool items.

So my recommendation would be to ask yourself what you are interested in learning. There is the information about making a game character, however I find the the Learning Autodesk 3DS Max 2008 is the only book around that really provides the entire pipeline of model to texturing to biped and animation. And this book doesn't particularlly have any merits that make it any better than the myriad of half-ass 3DS Max books that have dominated the market for years.

If you wish to learn about modeling, get the 3DS Max Modeling for Games book. It has an excellent character demo (although it uses a proprietry non-3DS Max UV mapping tool) for Max. And if you want a generic book that provides the basics, I'd recommend checking out the Essential 3DS Max book - which at least covers the gammut and has a lot of valueable information or the 3DS Max at a Glance which is a good overview/intro book although the tutorials are deceptively easy.

I wish I had a little bit more freetime, because there is definately a need for a good 3DS Max Game book, but it doesn't seem like any one out there is capable of writing it. If you want to see what a good game book looks like check out Art of the Game or the now outdated but beautiful Alias Game Art Book both are elegant, informative, and accessible.

Not worth the money

It is sure not worth its price! It contains huge gallery of beautiful pictures, do they think I am not able to find it in the internet? I bought this book hoping it had some interesting projects, but no! The projects are just primitive, they are all about basics. Another big drawback - the margins in this book are SUPER WIDE! In fact, this book could have been published with paperback in about 20 pages in all. Of course, no one would pay that money for it.

I have been using parts of this book to refine my 3D Studio Max knowledge. It has been a useful tool filled with tutorials and resources for 3D Studio Max users of all levels of experience.
