You'll be stuffed when you finish this book

In this staggering work of small paragraphs, mostly, observing nearly every imaginable (and unimaginable) use of food in films, no pot lid or glass dome is left unturned. In Chapter 12, the meat of it, Zimmerman discloses his principles of a "food film," with common sense and exciting discussions of those he feels meet the new genre's definition, but its a better read if you digest what precedes. At the same time, the author's encyclopedic mind misses the social history of food in the century of film, so the chance to get underneath the evolving roles of food in cinema, the evolution of the foodie, or the impact of food as spectacle (hot dog eating contests or chef competition) or as entertainment (the Food Network) are all outside the book's scope, so the book is largely a buffet rather than a 12 course meal. However, as anyone who has ever eaten at a casino knows, the buffet has its place on our table.
