Much has been written about the colonists who took up arms during the American Revolution and the army they created. Far less literature, however, has been devoted to their adversaries. The professional soldiers that composed the British army are seldom considered on a personal level, instead being either overlooked or inaccurately characterized as conscripts and criminals. Most of the British Redcoats sent to America in defense of their government’s policies were career soldiers who enlisted voluntarily in their late teens or early twenties. They came from all walks of British life, including those with nowhere else to turn, those aspiring to improve their social standing, and all others in between. Statistics show that most were simply hardworking men with various amounts of education who had chosen the military in preference to other occupations. Very few of these soldiers left writings from which we can learn their private motives and experiences.
British Soldiers, American War: Voices of the American Revolution is the first collection of personal narratives by British common soldiers ever assembled and published. Author Don N. Hagist has located first-hand accounts of nine soldiers who served in America in the 1770s and 1780s. DON N. HAGIST is author of three books and numerous articles on the British experience in the American Revolution, focusing on the lives of the common soldiers. He is an engineer by profession and lives in Rhode Island.

War's dirtiest little secret

War is full of dirty little secrets.
Perhaps the dirtiest of all is that the enemy is usually comprised of people just like us.
Decent, honorable people, trying to do what's right for their cause or their country, or for themselves.
That's one of the messages you take away from Don Hagist's new book on the British soldiers who fought to suppress the American Revolution.
In an interview with the public radio program, "The World", Hagist says "there's a tendency to look at historical wars strictly in terms of good guys and bad guys," adds Hagist. "And so you assume that if America's enemy were the bad guys, then the people fighting in the army must have been bad somehow. So we lose sight of the fact that the armies are made up of individual people and they all had lives, they all had reasons for joining the army."
The book centers on a collection of first-hand accounts written by a handful of the thousands of British soldiers who came to America to defeat the revolting colonists.
These accounts provide a fascinating insight into the motives and lives of these individual professional soldiers.
But it's Hagist's ability to integrate these stories with his decades of scholarship that really sets "British Soldiers, American War" apart.
He uses these stories as a narrative thread to anchor and showcase his insight into the composition and demographics of the 18th century British army.
Gone are the myths found in so much of the literature about the scum of the earth, pressed into service as an alternative to jail or the gallows, then disciplined brutally with constant floggings to become a mindless killing machine, insensitive to danger, and incapable of independent thought.
It's a set of myths reinforced by Hollywood and innumerable authors and popular historians.
In place of myths is solid data that shows how common British soldiers had their own lives, thoughts and aspirations.
If there's one criticism to be made, it's that Hagist may occasionally present an impression of military life that's a little too rosy.
For example, he describes how many men enlisted to better themselves, and clearly many did. But it does not take account of views of contemporary writers like William Cobbett, who served in the peacetime army of the 1780s, and who protested against the low pay and harsh treatment, even exploitation, of enlisted men in the British army.
But nonetheless, this book clearly reclaims the humanity of these soldiers.

Interesting, entertaining and easy to read

I was not sure what to expect when this book was recommended to me. I was pleasantly surprised!!
I am not a history or military buff. So I learned a lot and I really enjoyed it because I did not feel like I was reading a text book. The author does an excellent job of putting in the facts and histories and details, etc... in between the soldiers stories. Which is perfect because some authors lump all of that stuff together.
The soldiers stories were wonderful to read! I think it made a big difference knowing that these were first-hand accounts.
The authors delivery of the details and facts is done very well. It speaks to his subject knowledge and the amount of time he must have spent researching for this book!!

Great book for casual or serious history buffs

I'm a fan of history books and I've read several histories of the American Revolution over the years, but never one from this point of view. Hagist does a great job of explaining the British soldier's life and includes several first hand accounts from soldiers who served at the time.
This is a book that is good for a casual history fan or a serious historian.
The book gives some interesting details of how the British army was set up at the time and how it functioned. Often times these histories are focused on the American military and treat the British as a monolithic entity. This history gives some great insight into how the British army recruited, how it organized its soldiers, and how they lived in the army.
The first hand accounts included are excerpts from autobiographies, court records, and letters of the time. The personal accounts humanize the soldiers who are often forgotten in histories of the Revolution. They go a long way to explain who these men were and their motivations for joining the British army. Its also interesting to read accounts of soldiers who stayed in America after the war.
The book contains a lot of details about the army and soldiers lives, but its not dry or too pedantic. A casual history fan with some background in the Revolution will find it an interesting alternative view or the war and give some good insights about who the Americans were fighting. A serious history buff will find the book a good reference source to compare with other material about the war and times.
