About the Author
Matt Carter, PhD, is currently Assistant Professor of Biology at Williams College. His previous position was as a post-doctoral fellow in Richard Palmiter’s lab at the University of Washington using optogenetic techniques to study neural circuitry. He has authored the first edition of this book (Elsevier, 2009) as well as Designing Science Presentations: A Visual Guide to Figures, Papers, Slides, Posters, and More (Elsevier, 2012). He was the awardee of Stanford University’s Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, and two-time recipient of the Stanford School of Medicine’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He currently teaches courses at Williams in both Topics in Neuroscience as well as Neural Systems and Circuits.

A Must-Read for All Scientists -- and great advice for all presenters!

As a graduate student, I've suffered through more than my fair share of sub-par science presentations. Too many scientists believe that their science speaks for itself, but all too often it is totally lost on the audience because it is buried in poor communication and distracting design choices. Clearly, thoughtful creation of scientific presentations is not part of the curriculum for most scientists, but it should be, and this book could be the text.
Since I care about design and want to create the best presentations possible, I've read a few presentation how-to books, but those catered to scientists seem to be full of generic advice ("use contrasting colors!") and none so far have focused on visual design with graphics to show the reader examples. My favorite presentation book was "Slide:ology" by Nancy Duarte, which has great visuals, but the book is written for business and general presentations and does not cover the presentation issues that seem to plague scientists. "Designing Science Presentations" is actually much more thorough than "slide:ology", with more specifics and details (down to suggested point sizes for lines on graphs) and a more, well, scientific explanation of design principles such as color and typography. With tons of graphs and visual examples! Great for visual learners, like me (and like a lot of scientists!).

Pros:
* TONs of visual examples
* Easy to navigate to specific information (good index, logical sequence)
* Provides very specific details (point size, specific fonts to use, a list of ways to reduce wordiness)
* The design section is actually really helpful for creating figures for publication as well as for presentations.
* Not just about slide design! Includes advice on written presentations, poster design and presentation, oral presentations without slides, and different kinds common presentations (lab meetings, journal clubs, research seminar, symposium talk, etc.). Right now I'm finding the advice on writing research articles very hepful!
* Summary of 'Do's and 'Don't's for every chapter
* Nice coverage of "dealing with anxiety" and the Q&A section of talks

Cons:
* It is very thorough, so it takes quite a while to get through -- you can't just brush up before your big talk!
* The time expectations are a little overwhelming (at one point it's suggested that 5-20 hours be devoted to designing elegant tables, charts, etc. and then another 5-50 for designing slides, then another 1-5 to edit them for the particular talk). Unfortunately, no scientist I know has the 150 hours suggested as the maximum time to prepare a fully polished presentation. Perhaps this is meant to inspire scientists to at least devote more time to presentations than they are currently allotting?

I can think of many established scientists who would benefit enormously from applying just a fraction of the advice in this book. Now, any advice on giving them the book without offending them would be greatly appreciated!

An incredibly useful book!

This is a really excellent book that should be a fantastic resource for scientists at any stage of their career. It contains a wonderful array of tools, tricks and guidelines for clear and efficient presentation of scientific research. Even the most experienced scientists follow many of these rules only by intuition and may therefore unintentionally fall victim to common pitfalls. By carefully drawing together a remarkably comprehensive set of these "unwritten rules" of scientific presentation style, Matt Carter has created an ideal resource for scientists at any level of their careers. One of the best things about this book is that once you see these suggestions and tips laid out in Dr. Carter's clear and intuitive style, it becomes much easier to keep them in mind and consciously use them as a guide for future presentations.

The book is very well written, and the author's natural humor makes it engaging to read. As the other reviewers have noted, it is too long to simply "skim through" the whole thing in one sitting (343 pages). However, it is efficiently organized into independent modules for different presentation formats, ranging from graphic design of a poster, to professionally polished formal slide presentations. This makes it very easy to skip straight to the relevant section, regardless of whether you are preparing for an upcoming job talk, just making some slides for a lab meeting, or designing the figures for the paper you are writing. Each focused section is only a couple pages long, with many excellent diagrams, pictures and graphics making it easy to absorb the highlights in just a few minutes.

All in all, every lab should have a copy on the shelf for grad students, post-docs and even the PI to consult.

A Must Have!

This is a must have book for anyone looking to learn and improve their skills in presenting their science in research papers, posters and talks. As a graduate student, I have found the book to be very useful in several areas. I have outlined some of these key areas below.

1. Comprehensive but not overwhelming: The book is thorough as it goes over the details on many aspects of data presentation in papers and talks of many different formats. The chapters are well laid out and one can easily follow the logic throughout all the chapters. Each of the chapters concludes with a summary of DON'Ts and DOs which is SUPER useful.
Note that with such detail, you will most likely have to revisit the chapters a couple of times to try out some of the recommendations. I think this is great as you will end up using the book frequently thus it won't just collect dust.

2. The Visual Power: The visual demonstrations are very powerful. They instantly make a point which would otherwise take an additional page to describe. Many important points are highlighted and in bold to make it easier for the reader to follow. This is important as I have revisited many chapters to remind myself of several critical points I may have forgotten.
Note that the author does not give explicit instructions on how to use Illustrator, Keynote or Powerpoint to achieve some of the design features illustrated in the chapters. This is beyond the scope of the book plus the programs already have detailed manuals elsewhere.

3. It's inspiring and surprisingly fun: You can tell very easily that the author cares a lot about helping others communicate their science more effectively. Some of the chapters include additional recommended readings, useful quotes about design, and even some short stories to drive home some critical points. There are many tricks I never even considered which the author inspires you to try.

On final analysis, this book is very useful for scientists across many fields and levels. I especially recommend it for graduate students early on in their training.

This is the single most important book on African poverty you are likely to read. Ok, it doesn't compare with the scope of Cliffe's The African Poor. But it is very powerfully written and extremely insightful. Those familiar with participatory assessments will know they often find that respondents blame the poor for their plight (not surprising, we do the same in developed countries) - but these results are usually ignored by the researchers. This book demonstrates how important this finding is - not because the poor ARE to blame for their poverty, but because the stigma attached to being poor creates a social poverty trap.

Dear Amazon Readers,

It would be an understatement to say that I was honored when Focal Press approached me about updating John Eargle’s classic The Microphone Book. John was a respected member of the New York section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) during my early days in the audio industry and I learned much from him at the meetings. He worked for RCA Records in New York as I did some years later. He also helped JVC develop CD4 quadraphonic recording, which I worked on during my time at RCA. We both recorded orchestras and other classic musical groups, although I also recorded artists such as Frank Zappa. The AES honored John with a Fellowship award in 1971, and awarded me a Fellowship in 2009.

Like John, I love everything to do with audio, and audio starts with the microphone. I study things I love, and microphones are no exception. I find everything about them interesting--from their history to the technology, to the multitude of ways they can be used. I collect microphones, and even build my own custom microphones. I design sound systems for clients ranging from the U.S. Senate to the local church, all of which require microphones. All of this passion and experience helped shape my perspectives, along with my approach to writing this book.

My hope is that this book will introduce readers to the fascinating world of microphones, while providing them a deeper and appreciation and understanding of the critical role they play in shaping our recordings. Whether you're a recording engineer, sound reinforcement engineer, technology geek, microphone collector, sound designer, or just an audio enthusiast, you will find something of interest in The Microphone Book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed updating John Eargle's timeless masterpiece of microphone technology, application and technique.

The Superlux R102 is an example of a modern, inexpensive ribbon microphone with sound similar to some of the "classic" ribbon microphones of the 1930s through 1970s. It's also an active ribbon with output levels similar to a condenser microphone.
This cutaway view of a Neumann SM-69 stereo microphone reveals its pair of large diaphragm condenser capsules. So-called "all-in-one" stereo microphones like this make stereo recording very easy since only one microphone needs to be placed instead of two.
The Core Tetramic is an extremely small surround microphone (note the quarter next to the microphone). Its software makes it possible to use its four-channel recording to produce
full surround recordings.
Sound reinforcement systems today have largely replaced the lapel, or lavalier, microphone with earset microphones like the Countryman E6 earset microphone seen here. The E6 and all the similar microphones that came after it have greatly improved the sound quality of many sound reinforcement systems.
This classic Altec 639 combined ribbon and dynamic microphone elements. By selectively blending the sounds from the two elements, six different directional patterns and six different sound qualities could be obtained.

Very Readable Technical Reference

I can't put it any more succinctly than the subtitle, `A Guide to Microphone Design and Application'.

About half of the book covers microphone theory and design - to the schematic level - and is a goldmine for anyone interested enough not to throw away the spec sheet when they unpack a mic. I have some background in electronics and, although I've no intention or ability to try building a microphone, I guess I'm geek enough to find this stuff fascinating. From the history of microphones, pressure and directionality principles and how to measure them, to varied applications and how different mics fit in, `The Microphone Book' is a technical reference work that's equally readable straight through.

The applications half is where many readers will decide if the book is right for them. It's not particularly geared toward home recordists working in contemporary styles who are looking to emulate pro studio sounds in their bedroom. The author himself states the book was written primarily for engineers and designers. The musical application chapters are divided between classical (stressing various hall acoustics and ensemble setups) along with studio recording (focusing on drums, piano, voice). Additionally, there's information on broadcast communications (radio/TV spoken word) and live voice applications. I found the information solid, if the presentation feels a bit dry in spots.

There's a terrific chapter on classic microphones featuring pictures and comparison specs that will have you drooling in no time.

This is the third edition (2012) and includes an overview chapter on wireless microphone technology; I'm still a wired guy but I found it interesting - although there are more in-depth sources at this point. There's no mention of USB in the book.

If you're a guitar player looking for examples of various ways to position a SM-57 in front of your stack, there are more concise books out there that include sample recordings. If you're an engineer, studying to be one, or have a serious interest in what's often regarded as the most important link in the audio recording chain, consider `The Microphone Book' everything else you might want to know that you won't get from practical trial and error.

This book is a technical reference for many different aspects of microphone construction and usage. Rayburn is a recording engineering with a lifelong interest in microphones and how they work. In this book, he explains the acoustic and electronic principles utilized by microphones, as well as how microphones can be used for recording or amplification. Topics covered in the book include: history of the microphone, sound transmission by microphones, types of microphones, microphone accessories, recording techniques and microphone placement in studio, live, and surround sound, microphone arrays, and the care and maintenance of microphones. The text is illustrated throughout with black-and-white photos, diagrams and charts. End material includes a topical list of references and biography for further reading.

I found this book a great reference collection of information about microphones. I especially like the fact that Rayburn discusses each point generally without tying his explanations to any specific brand or model, except, of course, at the end, where he provides some descriptions of classic microphones. Much of the book is geared towards explaining the terms and concepts used to describe microphones, or their technical specifications. If you spend some time studying the text, you will have a much better idea of the differences between different types of microphones, and what to look for when choosing a microphone for your next project. The book is definitely aimed towards geeks, with plenty of physics, electronics, and even some calculus as well. Fortunately, Rayburn's explanations are clear and are relatively easy to follow if you have a technical background. And if math isn't your thing, you can just skip to the more practical sections, like microphone placement and maintenance. Overall, this book provides a great overview of the world of microphones and would make a great reference in any recording studio.

Microphone Bible for Students

Brilliant reference book for the novice or professional. My 16 year old son is on the stagecraft team for the local highschool that is an arts school. This year they have a new stagecraft teacher and they had to set up the stage area from scratch because it had never been set up properly. With this book as a reference they learned about sound and how to use the correct microphones, how to care for them and how to acoustically set them up. Highly recommended.

Beginning with an explanation of healthy versus destructive behavior, Ponton makes it clear that taking risks is an important part of the developmental process. However, unhealthy or self-destructive risk taking is another matter, and teens must understand the causes of these behaviors in order to change them. In a series of case studies, the author/psychiatrist introduces teens she has counseled who exhibit a variety of dangerous behaviors, including running away, unprotected sex, self-mutilation, eating disorders, pregnancy, and bullying. Issues involved in the mother-son and father-daughter relationships are clearly explored. Divorce war dilemmas and their possible effects on a teen's actions are explained. The importance of familial influence, of the provision of healthy role models and open communication lines is ably demonstrated. Although adults will find this an illuminating book, it will appeal to YAs as well. It is readable, the case studies use teens that come from various backgrounds and have different abilities, and the behaviors are clearly explained. Many adolescents are likely to find a deeper understanding of their own actions or those of their friends. Ponton, a San Francisco psychiatrist who specializes in treating adolescents, asserts that risk taking is a normal and even essential part of the teenage years. Unfortunately, when positive risks aren't modeled by a teen's family or peer group, negative and dangerous risk taking is often the result. Ponton describes several case studies of adolescents who have opted for dangerous risks such as running away, taking drugs, having unprotected intercourse, getting involved in gang activity, and even raping and terrorizing other teens. All the case studies presented go into detail about the family or social dynamics that have contributed to the teen's negative risk taking. Despite a de facto fictionalization?Ponton has changed all identifying characteristics, added made-up dialog, and sometimes morphed two or more people's stories together?the author has put together a work that delves deeply into why teens take dangerous risks. A provocative, well-documented assessment of adolescence as a time of risk-taking. Ponton (Psychiatry/Univ. of California, San Francisco) challenges the prevailing notion that adolescence is naturally a turbulent time for both teens and their parents. Adolescence, she contends, is a time of risk-taking, most of which is positive and healthy. In fact, 80 percent of young people manage this developmental period without significant difficulties, engaging in the kinds of risks which allow them to develop their potential as they mature. It's the remaining 20 percent that is the focus of Ponton's book. Ponton presents the case histories of 15 troubled adolescents from her clinical practice who were unable to navigate their teen years without taking unhealthy risks. The teens are a diverse group, ranging from an inner-city mother who fears that she will once again become pregnant to the daughter of a surgeon who has begun cutting herself in a desperate attempt to signal that she needs help. Although the factors that trigger unhealthy risk-taking are as varied as the risk-takers, a number of patterns emerge. Parents who are so deeply involved in their own daily struggles that they have neither the time nor energy to communicate with their children often put them at risk, as do those parents who become overly involved with their teens and view them as buddies. With divorce so prevalent, too many parents treat their children as peers rather than as youngsters in need of parental guidance. Teens need, insists Ponton, adults to guide them in making choices and to provide them with constructive opportunities to engage in healthy risk-taking. Adults, too, must be constantly on guard against negative risk behavior. Outstanding perspective on needs and motives of adolescents

Dr. Ponton writes an unusual book that gives voice to troubled teens and their families, using their engaging stories to teach about contemporary adolescence. As the reader eavesdrops on these lives through absorbing narrative, accounts of therapy, thoughtful reflection and application to relevant issues, and analyses of family interactions, important facts and facets of adolescent development and devlopmental issues are learned almost effortlessly. The book is engaging and at times exciting, as we come to know these teens and their struggles. The variety of teens and adolescent problems profiled is impressive--from the general need to explore and define the self (Jill) to gang involvement and aggression (Evan and Cecilia), from drugs and sexual activity to self-mutilation, depression and anorexia nervosa. Readers also learn about mental health services, and how therapy helps adolescents and families grow and change. This is a terrific book for parents, educators, any mental health field worker, or teens themselves! I used this book as a supplemental reader to a course I taught in adolescent development at a major university where I am a doctoral student in clinical psychology. Students loved it, and several bought copies as gifts for their parents or other family members. I will be using it again for a section of Adolescent Development I will be teaching in spring semester, 1999.

An Excellent Resource - Rather Technical

Dr. Lynn Ponton has been treating adolescents for many years and through this book has attempted to chronicle the key lives and issues that have influenced her views of teenager psychology. Presenting a range of often likeable characters, Dr. Ponton does an excellent job of showing the intelligence and resilience of her patients while at the same time demonstrating how parents can feel angry and confused about how to parent their teen. The book illustrates all the main issues surrounding adolescents, eating disorders, drugs/alcohol, sex, and abuse, as well as analyzing the complexity of mother/son, mother/daughter, father/son, and father/daughter relationships.
If I had to offer one criticism of this book, it would be that Dr. Ponton's language (particularly at the beginning of the book) tends to be extremely clinical and often presents a layer to wade through to find her point. Although we live in the era of the pseudo-psychological talk show, and some of the language will be familiar, parents and teens seeking answers to a problem may find this quality of the book off-putting. Conversely, I think this book would be of intense interest for other therapists who are interested in seeing various past and current adolescent theory put into practice by a skilled practioner. The stories of the teens and their families are compelling to all audiences, however, and I cautiously recommend this book to a large audience.

The content of this book was so thought-provoking and informative about adolescence that I wanted to give it to my teenage daughter to read. The stories aout the teens are exciting, helping me understand my teenage years and my daughters'. This book should be read by every parent and teenager!

Julie Buckner Armstrong is Assistant Professor of English at Valdosta State in Georgia. Houston B. Roberston is Assistant Professor of U.S. History at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Rhonda Y. Williams is Assistant Professor of History at Case Western.

Teaching the American Civil Rights Movement is a collaboration of teachers and college professors coming together to create new methods of teaching the Civil Rights. These are educators from across the nation meeting every summer to learn from one another. This text is a compilation of their creative strategies and tactics for students to benefit from. The book's aim is to present new ways of exposing the Civil Rights Movement in classrooms across the nation. It is more than a textbook; it is a creative package for students and scholars to become enlightened by our history and contemporary way of life.
