Too Funny!

This is a funny read! A family that travels halfway around the world to live in a village in England for a year. It's a light, funny story that reminded me of having to move every couple of years and get acclimated to where you where and just as you found your footing...time to go!

Allison talks about the village that she moves to, the folks in the village and what she does to fit in. She also talks about traveling to nearby cities and what an ordeal it can be to travel with 2 small children (kudos to you, you brave woman!!).

I'd have liked it to be a longer book, but that's just because of my love of England and travel. Anyone moving anywhere can relate!

Great fun

This is a very enjoyable little memoir of what it really means to pack up your young children and go to the other side of the world for a year. It's worth it for the incident with the hamster. I challenge you not to embarassed-laugh on the train.

The Best Book on Stand-up

I've read a lot of bad books on stand-up comedy, all of them except this one. This is the only good one I've read. After I read this, I did stand-up for the first time at a bar for 30 people. The next week I was in the Comedy Central/Miller Lite Lite 'n Up competition at Comedy Works in Denver for a packed house each time I performed. Out of 100 people, and over the course of 2 months of performing, I got third place. Since then I've moved to Chicago and got booked at Zanie's. A lot of that had to do with the book. It cuts through to the chase.

Brilliant - like no other comedy writing book out there!

I collect humorous stories - sales blunders, actually. So I wanted a book that would help me as a professional speaker to be as funny as possible. Speakers, like comedians, get paid more when their audience laughs more.
So I began buying all the comedy writing books and most are pretty good. Buy Jay's is first of all, hilariously funny (bonus!) and second, more insightful than anything else. He discusses the psychology of the performer and the audience. He has little, interesting, no - fascinating details I found nowhere else.
Funny cartoons, creativity galore, inspiration and encouragement for anyone dipping into comedy or getting a dunking in it.
Best book on the block on this topic!

a workbook

If you are curious about what makes things funny and how to get laughs, this book breaks it down. It is geared towards people breaking into the world of stand-up comedy, and even if you don't intend on making a career out of it, you can still learn a lot about being funny. If you want to be a stand-up comedian, this book is for you. If you are inclined to write, I suggest picking up a copy of The Comic Toolbox by Vorhaus.

A longtime skeptic of individual rights, Supreme Court justice Holmes wrote in 1919 the court opinion that solidified free speech rights in American political doctrine. Holmes’ change of heart has long been pondered by legal scholars and historians. Drawing on newly uncovered letters and memos, legal scholar Healy recounts Holmes’ long, slow process of advocating for free speech at a time of great national turmoil. WWI had recently ended, but the nation faced bombings and explosions, race riots, and the fear of anarchists. About the Author
Thomas Healy is a professor of law at Seton Hall Law School. A graduate of Columbia Law School, he clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and was a Supreme Court correspondent for the Baltimore Sun.

A HINGE OF HISTORY

Next year it will be 50 years since the great Anthony Lewis wrote his classic "Gideon's Trumpet" describing the story behind Gideon v. Wainwright in which the Supreme Court ruled that criminal defendants have a right to an attorney even if they cannot afford it. In the intervening almost half century thousands of books have been written about the Supreme Court and its justices and various important court decisions. Not until now however, with the publication of Thomas Healy's "The Great Dissent", has one equalled "Gideon's Trumpet" in terms of presenting outstanding legal research and scholarship regarding a monumental court decision as such a fascinating and riveting tale so superbly told that it won't let you go. Think of your favorite novelist. Or writer of terrific espionage thrillers or mystery or detective stories. How hard is it to put down one of his or her new books? Well if you have any interest at all in either freedom of speech, the Supreme Court, or Oliver Wendell Holmes you will face exactly that same challenge once you are two pages into "The Great Dissent."

Holmes' dissent in Abrams v United States was a hinge of history in terms of the First Amendment and freedom of speech in the United States. The Constitution of the United States is what the justices of the Supreme Court say it is. And until Holmes breathed life into our First Amendment, just as Thomas Healy the author of The Great Dissent breathes life into how that dissent came about back in 1919, freedom of speech in the United States was not what we presently enjoy as citizens. How that hinge of history swung, and from where. and to where, and why, is an amazing and intriguing story with many strands braided together beautifully by Thomas Healy into a terrific tapestry.

For me personally, the most interesting strand is how Holmes, who until this decision was somewhat of an opponent of free speech, came to change his mind. I have been a lifelong camp follower of Oliver Wendell Holmes ever since reading Catherine Drinker Bowen's wonderful biography of him "Yankee From Olympus" in 1950 when I was 14. I thought I knew almost everything there was to know about my boyhood hero. But no. "The Great Dissent" opened new vistas of understanding for me regarding the mind and values and logic of my Oliver Wendell Holmes. In this decision he changed his mind on an incredibly important issue. And why he did it and how he did it -- all to the benefit of all of us -- is a new and magnificent tale that not only greatly changed our country but is also an example from which we can all learn important personal lessons on open-mindedness.

A valuable contribution to legal history

This book was enjoyable start to finish. From the very beginning Healy perfectly illustrated Holmes' personal relationships both vividly and accurately. The book is constantly entertaining without ever jeopardizing top-notch scholarship; this is a rare find. I particularly enjoyed the thorough examination of the first amendment cases.

This book examines so many nuances and developments in Holmes' life that it truly convinces one that he indeed had a great transformation. As an avid reader of History I enjoyed the book and I think it is a valuable contribution to legal history. Scholars have speculated endlessly about Holmes and Free Speech but in my opinion they too often ignored complexities in search of a single explanation for his Abrams dissent. Instead The Great Dissent leaves no stone unturned and shows how multi-faceted his transformation was. If you want to read a complete and entertaining account of Holmes and free speech I highly recommend The Great Dissent.

Talk Crimes

A very good book on the First Amendment and how the great Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes came to put his polished interpreting mark on this fundamental protector of free speech.

The author, Professor Thomas Healy, avoids academic jargon and keeps the reader interested not only in the evolving law but of the life story of the elderly jurist and his many younger and liberal friends, including such notable people as Learned Hand, Felix Frankfurter, and Harold Laski.

If you want to learn about the 20th century history of free speech protection under the U.S. Constitution and how personal friendships can influence the thinking of a judge, this book is a bright starting point.

One quarrel: I do think Professor Healy too often discounts the real threat Soviet communism did pose to the United States for most of the last century. Millions did die under this misguided system. And Alger Hiss, who once clerked for Justice Holmes, while targeted by the FBI's reactionary Hoover was, in deed, a Soviet agent.

Also, readers of this book will notice a few references to the "House of Truth." If you want to read a good book on this subject, I recommend obtaining a copy of "On Dupont Circle" by James Srodes (2012).

A Nice Collection for Lamb Fans!

Charles Lamb was a superb essayist and letter writer. Despite a tragic life, his prose reflect a genuine man of grace, charm, optimism, and good humor. This volume collects several of his finest works (Dream-Children; A Reverie, The Old Familiar Faces, Superannuated Man, etc.) as well as several of his letters. As someone who was interested in reading more of Lamb's work I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I brought this book to read after reading the book THE GUERNESY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY by Mary Ann Shafer and Annie Barrows, which is a GREAT book. I found Charles Lamb to be a good read.

Interesting, but a difficult slog

I guess I thought this would be better than it was. A few of the essays are readable. The ones on London are very good. The letters are interesting. I don't care much at all about the literary criticism. It's mostly an interesting introduction to life in London during the early 1800's. He wrote a really scathing poem attacking the Prince Regent. The Prince Regent, however, found time to read Jane Austen. Evidently, Charles Lamb couldn't be bothered.

Dr. Maurice Stewart, PE, a Registered Professional Engineer with over 40 years international consulting experience in project management; designing, selecting, specifying, installing, operating, optimizing, retrofitting and troubleshooting oil, water and gas handling, conditioning and processing facilities; designing plant piping and pipeline systems, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, process equipment, and pumping and compression systems; and leading hazards analysis reviews and risk assessments.

Oran T. Lewis, is an Adjunct Instructor with over 30 years experience in the erection, maintenance, inspection, fabrication, modification and repair of pressure and piping equipment, as well as presenting education courses for piping inspection, weld and pressure equipment inspection. His certifications are, in order of obtainment, National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Authorized Inspector, AWS Certified Welding Inspector, API 510 Certified Pressure Vessel Inspector, API 570 Certified Piping Inspector, NACE Level 1 Corrosion.

The book we have all been waiting for!

For those looking to bridge the gap between exciting, but not necessarily accurate, accounts of various exploits of the Marines, and the accurate, but dry histories of the Corps, this is it! Underdogs gives the story of the shaping of the modern Marine Corps in vivid detail with interesting analysis of the underlying causes. Fans of Marine Corps history as well as those looking to understand a culture that is mysterious to many should look to this book as the new baseline from which to start understanding America's most elite branch of the military.

A "WARTS AND ALL" HISTORY OF THE USMC

O'Connell is very frank in covering the positive and negative aspects of the Corps' history. On balance, he comes out on the positive side of the ledger and clearly captures the idea that it is the USMC culture that is so central to the Marines' success. While the other services may offer world travel or high-tech planes and gadgets, the Marines simply ask "Do you have what it takes to be a United States Marine?"

A More Excellent Perception

During my studies at Fresno Pacific University, a Mennonite university, The Upside Down Kingdom by Donald Kraybill was required reading for the completion of a degree in social work. Through a move across country the book was lost, and I was so pleased to discover a copy for my Kindle. I had been very impressed by the content of the book and reflected often upon the radical view of the social application of Jesus's teachings. It was a joy to be able to again have the book in my possession.
Mr. Kraybill is Mennonite and the theme of passive non-violent resistance is elucidated through his setting forth the Kingdom of God as being a dynamic presence for good now and not at some future time. The Jesus of this writing is not some absolutist figure concerned with just the the hereafter destiny of humanity; he represents a God of justice, compassion, and strength who is intimately involved in the revelation of the whole of creation made in His image and likeness, as set forth in the first chapter of Genesis. Kraybill sees salvation as including the very practical and and tangible expression of divinity made manifest in humanity and in the establishment of an equitable and just society. A thought provoking and ideal changing read for any individual passionate for equanimity and social justice and reform.

I purchased this book to give to a friend. I can think of no better way to explain the meaning of Christian faith. Donald Kraybill is both profound and totally accessible. A little like Jesus himself.

Essential For All Christians

I echo the sentiments of every comment made thus far. Anyone who purports to be a Christian no matter what particular Christian denomination they ascribe to should read this book. It is one of the few books that I will read over and over again. Why? Because it gives me yet another perspective of the Christ--the Master--that makes me stand even more in awe of Him. And this book makes it very clear how far I have yet to travel along The Path before I can legitimately call myself a true ‘Christian’ after the manner of Jesus the Christ. Thank you Mr. Kraybill, for writing this book.

Tom Wolsky Nails It!!!

I have been using FCE 3.5 since it came out and thought I knew something about the software. After reading not even 100 pages I learned that more to learn was very possible. His presentation is straight forward and easy to understand. I wondered what took so long for a book on FCE 3.5 would come out and am glad this one did. FCE3.5 is a powerful software and this book helps you get the most out of that power.

About the Author

Joy Hakim, a former teacher, editor, and writer won the prestigious James Michener Prize for her series, A History of US, which has sold over 4 million copies nationwide. A graduate of Smith College and Goucher College she spent years teaching students from elementary school up to the college level. She also served as an Associate Editor at Norfolk's Virginian-Pilot, and was an Assistant Editor at McGraw-Hill's World News.

If only history class would have been this exciting...

...I might not have used it for nap-time!

This series - The History of US - covers the history of the people of the United States. It is written in language that 8-12 year olds can easily understand. Difficult words are have accompanying pronunciations and definitions.

My 8 year old daughter and I are reading this series together and out loud. She finds it fascinating and a real page turner. Unlike my history texts (in the 70's) that tended to skip and flit about through time, this series starts at 50,000 BC and goes forward to the present.

Volume #1 covers the Neandertahals & Homo Sapiens, the Indians, Columbus, and the Conquistadors to approximately year 1600.

I think that this would be a good series for teaching history to homeschoolers. We are certainly looking forward to Volume #2. I promise that you - the parent - will also learn quite a bit!

Not Pleased with the Digital Version

Although I love Hakim's series of books, and we've been using the print versions for Grade 7 for years, the digital version has much to be desired. Be forewarned--it is text-only, without any of the photographs, maps, or diagrams, and without the margin definitions and detail. It's okay for reading just the text, as it is the same as the print version, but how is any seventh grader going to get into this book when it is just page after page of unbroken text?

Better than textbooks

The information in this series of books is very detailed, well researched, and has a fun approachable tone. My only concern is that it might sometimes border on being too flippant. But the report of history is very balanced and it's always asking the reader questions and letting the reader make conclusions about open ended topics.
