About the Author
David Sherwin is an interaction designer and creative director with a depth of expertise in developing compelling solutions for challenging business problems. His first book was Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills (HOW Books).

David is currently an Interaction Design Director at frog, a global innovation firm, where he helps to guide the research, strategy and design of novel products and services for some of today's leading companies and nonprofit organizations. He is also a senior lecturer in the BFA in Interaction Design program at California College of the Arts. He has spoken and conducted workshops at events such as SxSW, Interaction 11, HOW Design Live, as well as at several design schools around the world. His writing has appeared in Smashing Magazine, TheAtlantic.com/Life, A List Apart, PSFK.com, HOW and many other periodicals.

He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, the poet and writer Mary Paynter Sherwin. In his free time, he maintains the blog ChangeOrder at changeorderblog.com.

Maybe the Best Book on the Design Business

Most design business books tend to skew towards generic advice. This book is the real deal. Nothing but meat and potatoes here. It's practically a handbook for how to be a Creative Director or Account Manager at any design studio (ideally, your own). Some great insights on what to include in design briefs, creative briefs, deliverable briefs, etc.

Want to level-up as a professional designer?

I am so glad this book came my way. As a designer venturing in to freelance, this book has been an incredible resource for knowing what to expect and what is expected of me in professional relationships. 'Success by Design' would be excellent for anyone getting their start in the field or independents and small shop owners who want to take their business to the next level. As designers we love constraints in the creative process and 'SbD' will teach you the value of working with constraints in client relations and deliverables. This book is like a mentor in your pocket; a compendium of career hacks from someone who can set type and draw like a Level 5 boss (the layout and illustrations are delightful).

"Essential Business Reference" is an accurate title

Like David Sherwin's talks, this book is positively LOADED with information you didn't know that you didn't know. If you're considering opening your own design shop, or want to freelance (or anything in between), everything business-wise you need to consider or remember is in this book. And I mean everything. It's not for reading chapter-by-chapter, but as a substantial, and very detailed reference. If only I'd had this information twenty-some-odd years ago.

About the Author
Ellie Whitney, PhD grew up in New York City and received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English and biology at Radcliffe/Harvard University and Washington Universities, respectively. She has taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, has written newspaper columns on environmental matters for the Tallahassee Democrat, and has authored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which have been revised multiple times over the years. In addition to teaching and writing, she has spent the past three-plus decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology. Her latest book is Priceless Florida: The Natural Ecosystems (Pineapple Press, 2004).

Eleanor Noss Whitney has not only succeeded in writing a concise, understandable, and comprehensive Mah Jong handbook, she has elegantly and expertly distilled into a mere 176 pages the essential tools and strategies to achieve true mastery of this ancient and wonderful game.
Whitney's handbook is the only book that most players will ever need to become a knowledgeable, confident and winning Mah Jong player. The basics of play, including seating, dealer selection, wall-building, tile-dealing and play are laid out clearly with helpful examples and good illustrations. The scoring of Mah Jong is explained with numerous carefully-constructed examples, with helpful diagrams of each tile scenario for good visual reference.
The strategy of the game is brilliantly explained in Part III, again with numerous examples that gradually train beginning players how to quickly make strategic decisions to enhance their play. As Whitney explains, Mah Jong is a game governed by sheer luck of the draw, yet the "skillful player is actually one who knows how to adapt to his luck." Her extensive explanations and examples of both "offensive" and "defensive" strategies are the soul of the book, and I, for one, was amazed how quickly my comphrehension of the game improved after having read the entire chapter.
It is true that the focus of the book is primarily on the Japanese and American rules and variations, but Chinese equivalent terms are included in an extensive Glossary-Index. For the vast majority of players, this will not be a serious problem.
If you buy one book on Mah Jong, it should be this one.

A tour de force

The Mah Jong Handbook presents an amazingly clear method for approaching the game. The book is easy-to-read, but deals with every aspect of the game in detail.
To get the most out of the book, I recommend taking the time to work through the example exercises yourself (before going on to the analysis discussion.) Once you've gone through the book this way, you'll pretty much know everything that an expert player knows. The only thing left is to get in enough playing time to put the theory into practice.
In addition to the game aspects, the book discusses the accompanying rituals and etiquette, as well as many variations on the rules.

Useful, Comprehensive and Readable

A good introduction to the game for beginners, with strategy advice that will be useful to more experienced players as well.

Whitney explains clearly and concisely, using easy to understand diagrams. She even manages to explain Mah Jong's rather complex scoring system, which can be a bit off-putting for beginners.

Her inclusion of the differences between Japanese and American rules is also quite helpful, although I've found that as with any game, some of the rules and terminology vary from region to region.

All in all a good book for those looking to begin playing Mah Jong, particularly those in Japan or with Japanese friends.

Fascinating Read for Marketing

I picked up this book not knowing anything about AR, and I found it not only fascinating, but also extremely helpful from a marketing perspective. Kipper and Rampolla's writing style is clean and easy to follow, while they cover a breadth of information that is not only appropriate for today, but which lays a groundwork for what's to come in the future. This book will be a continual reference for me as I make marketing decisions, and as I navigate the various developing technologies that are playing larger roles in our daily lives. I would recommend Kipper and Rampolla's book to anyone who wants to know more about AR - what it means and where it's going.

This is an EXCELLENT book...as a person who must be up on the latest technologies this book I found in highly informational and something that I can use in everyday life. This book makes you think--as all books should about how we all can understand, benefit and use AR to push forward capabilities. I found it well worth the money, well written and edited and in enough detail that makes it truely "usable". This is a MUST read for anyone that needs to understand the linkages that technologies has with us all

Professor James H Humphrey from the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland has been active in the subject of children and sports for the last 60 years and authored many books.

This book has nine chapters: overview of child development, health as a factor in child development, stress, children's sports, objectives of children's sports, physical development, social-, emotional- and intellectual development.

Children and youth are physical with a love for play, but somehow our society is not always facilitating and the growing number of children with obesity a statement that physical play and activity have been replaced by time in front of the TV, video games and the internet, while eating junk food.

In this book both parents, coaches, professionals and others involved with children will find good information based on normal child development for which age children should begin playing organized sports and which sports are good for children in order to develop social, emotional, physical and intellectual capabilities.

About the Author
Jennifer Klein has worked as an elementary classroom teacher, gifted and talented teacher, and staff development teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Rockville, MD. Over the past several years, she has brought her love of literacy and art together to create after-school and summer workshops for children, including the Artist/Readers’ Workshop and the Artist/Writers’ Workshop.

Elizabeth (Lisa) Stuart taught elementary art for nine years and has been the content specialist for art, theatre, and dance for Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville, MD for the past five years. She loves finding ways for children to use art to deepen their understanding of other subjects and believes that all children can access the same level of understanding indifferent ways. Lisa lives in Silver Spring, Maryland with her husband, Dan, a metal sculptor, and her two children, Caitlin, and Colin.

My wife is always looking for good ideas for teaching the critical skill of reading. I got this as a gift for her (she works across the spectrum of learning disabilities, but also occasionally with G&T kids) and she has found it immensely valuable.

Innovative for ESOL teachers

This is a great book for anyone who teaches students who are learning English, or students who struggle with reading. Focusing on the comprehension strategies made clear by Stephanie Harvey and others, the authors have teamed up to collaborate on lessons that teach the strategies through art. The well laid-out lessons are organized by the different strategies -- making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, determining importance, and synthesizing. Anyone who teaches reading will find new ideas here. It's up-to-date with common core standards and will be perfect for integrating art into reading instruction, and vice versa.

Totally worth the $35!!!!!!!!!!

As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

Practical information with a thoughtful delivery

This book provides the information that Registered Dietitians need when working with patients struggling with eating disorders. It fills in the gap between a dietitians' final internship and years of hands on experience. Marcia understands what information patients need and how to deliver it. The tone of the book is right on, helping the reader understand the supportive educational role that dietitians should provide. I wish I wrote it first!

7 Stars on a 5-Star Scale: an Excellent Continued Education Cross-Trainer!

As a psychologist in practice, in picking up this book on nutrition counseling by a nutrition expert, I was expecting psychotherapy to be accorded its usual short shrift and after-thought status that seems so common for the nutritional literature on eating disordrs. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is the book calling for a non-nominal coordination of nutritional and psychological disciplines, the nutritional angle itself is presented with an extraordinary degree of psychological savvy.

Case in point: in addition to the coverage of various psychological treatment paradigms, the book offers process suggestions for nutritional counselors on managing self-disclosure, splitting, idealization, countertransference. The first two chapters are smartly subdivided into basic nutritional counseling (more educational in scope) and advanced nutrtional counseling that integrates nutritional counseling and psychotherapy.

While empirically authoritative and technically comprehensive, the book is also highly pragmatic. Dr. Herrin continuously offers direct speech suggestions of how to pitch a certain educational theme or tid-bit to a prospective client. Throughout the book, the reader keeps stumbling upon highly practical counseling gems that begin with "explan this" or "you might want to say this." This pragmatic refrain helps the reader to pause and translate the material into hypothetical counseling exchanges.

I particularly appreciated the no-nonsense harm-reduction orientation of the book: this is most evident in the discussion of normalizing the relationship with "fun foods," as well as in the discussion of managing binge-eating through paradoxical harm-reduction binge-schedulng alternatives.

The "intervention" core of the book, consisting of the following five chapters, is impeccable: "Weight Management," "Managing Weight Restoration" (a euphemism for "weight gain/weight normalization"), "Managing Binge Eating," "Managing Purging," and "Exercise Management."

Herrin's amazingly effective: page for page she offers tremendous informational density - without (!) creating a sense of informational satiation. Her narrative style feels light but never superficial. Her handling of the medical repercussions of purging is a wonderful example of that: in the span of just a few pages, Herrin manages to provide a panoramic overview of dental, electrolyte, cardiac, GI and other types of medical complications that can result from purging.

She offers a similarly effective overview of misuse of veganism/vegetarianism (as a socially sanctioned cover for restrictive eating), of eating pregnancy, and of other "special issues." She offers an extensive Appendix with forms, tables and handouts (check out Appendix E - "Recovery Plan" for binge-prevention and post-binge damage control).

In sum, the book seems to round out the respective educational-professional fortes of nutritional and psychological counselors. Nutritional counselors stand to learn more about the counseling aspect of nutritional counseling and psychologists working with eating disorders stand to learn more about the nutritional nuts and bolts of the eating disorder presentations that might otherwise be left unattended in the guilt-shame shade of client's ego-saving defenses.

Herrin's "Nutrition Counseling" is an excellent continued education cross-trainer!
