Entry Level Guide To Innovation
By C. Hill
"Innovation: Fast Track to Success" is a collection of charts and common wisdom relating to "Innovation" in the workplace. My background is in engineering management and had responsibility for the development of new (innovative) network services for my company, so was interested to review the information and strategies that should have been covered in this book.
The six areas of focus in the book are "planning, pipeline, process, platform, people, and performance", which is as it should be, but it lacks real depth and over uses buzzwords. There really isn't anything inaccurate or wrong with the contents, it just lacks anything that sets it above other books in this arena.
This repetitively thin book that will not offer much to the experienced manager or team leader, but might be useful to entry level managers.

calls attention to innovation but does not provide practical solutions
By J. W.
Wow, when I got around to writing this review, I saw that there are already numerous Amazon Vine voices who had ordered this book and written their reviews. Why so many? Most likely because there is a lot of interest in "innovation", so that we can lead our team to build the next iPhone! But does this book really help you get there?
Pros:
1. The author does offer a website for you to go and fill out questionnaires to assess your status (HealthChecks). Registration is free. Assessment tool is easy to use, though I personally prefer number scores instead of color bar / slider.
2. Case stories - interesting reads!
Cons:
1. Online templates - these cost money!
2. Too obvious in some places - for example, one of the tips is "learn from mistakes". I thought that was taught when we were adolescents.
What is most lacking though in the book is real solutions that a manager can use. For example, pages 47-48 make reference to a business case. I happen to find that business case (as in return on investment) is extremely important before approving a project. The book does not do much beyond giving a short one paragraph description on this. What good is a whole book on innovation if a business case can not be built to see if the innovations are worth a company's investment?
In conclusion, while this book does a decent job calling attention to the subject of innovation, I find it lacking in providing real working solutions to the problem.

General lists and general frameworks
By A dad
I think this book is actually a collection of lists and a lot of diagrams. These things can be useful tools for reference and help convey insight when presented in real time to define a specific issue.
While the material has the potential to serve as great a reference, I did not find it a pleasure to read. It has lists of truisms that need context to be helpful. Lacking context, the content conveyed the feeling one would get from reading densely written PowerPoint slides from a consultant that needed to be general enough to cover all economic sectors and all organizations.
This criticism is not meant to give the impression that the authors are factually wrong. I think they almost cannot be incorrect because their lists are so general. Rather than learning something applicable about innovation that might inspire, I reviewed lists that did not satify me.
