Book May Save You Some $$$

With the raising of our payroll taxes which takes more cash out of our paycheck and wallets, and economist Nouriel Roubini's prediction--who forecast the last financial melt-down--that there would be very slow growth of 1.7% this year (2013), it's especially helpful to find ways to maximize the dollars we spend. In this book, the author has tips on how you can do more and spend less. This book won't be for everybody, but I found some suggestions helpful for my personal situation.

The tips are divided into three areas: travel, shopping and personal finance. One of my takeaways from reading this book is you don't have to resort to typical default behavior regarding travel, shopping and finance expenditures. My brother is in sales and travels a lot, and I have seen how he manages to constantly upgrade ending up in first class and suites, while I'm usually sitting in the middle seat near the bathrooms on planes and have the room by the elevators with a view of the parking lot at hotels. My brother has taught me some ways to avoid these.

I think Brad can teach my brother a few things. For example, loved the idea of buying 2 night stays at the Hyatt at their less expensive Hyatt Places with one free night that can be used at their more expensive resorts. And buy Hyatt gift cards--$100 value for $79--at Costco. (Costco didn't have gift cards for Hyatt recently when we called them. However, my brother says many hotels--for example Weston, Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt--offer low-price guarantees in which if you find lower prices posted online on other travel sites, they will match the price and give you an additional 20-25% discount off that lower price.) I see how my brother is constantly looking for inexpensive travel deals online which he can then upgrade. Last week he was in a President's Suite of 2000 square feet, with a list price of not to exceed $5000 a night on the door. It included 4 free breakfasts and lounge food for which my brother paid only a $100 a night for the rooms and breakfast and snacks for his family overlooking the ocean in California. So, I've seen personally how it can be done with some desire, initiative, know-how and pluck.

Brad also offer ideas on how to get airplane miles via the airplanes and through credit cards. It was helpful to hear about the TSA Precheck for frequent fliers.

In the shopping section, Brad admits he buys most of his purchases online and had suggestions regarding iPhone plans, computer equipment, jewelry, groceries and household products. I didn't know that Costco, for example, makes nothing on the products they sell, so their profit is in their membership fees which is what keeps the cost down. I liked his idea regarding cable service and how you can keep the cost down there, too.

Regarding personal finance, it was enlightening to find out how to get into credit unions which save banking fees, how to raise your credit score above 740, where to get home loans for less and have your credit cards make or save you money.

It seems most folks will learn at least a few tips here, or at his site BRADS DEALS, which list the 10 best daily deals to save some money each day, which should more than pay for this book. But this book won't be for everybody. It helps to think of it as an adventure--but if you find tracking fares, credit card rates, hotel and airplane fees, and shopping bargains that appear for a short time--so you have to pounce--a chore, you won't enjoy the process and probably won't like Brad's book. This book is for folks who would find it fun and are willing to spend a little time, effort, and creative thought to pursue bargains. Brad is the first to say not all of the ideas will work all of the time.

I liked the book--didn't know what to expect as I hadn't heard of Brad or his website before--if it saves me several hundred dollars and I get a great vacation for less out of it, will love the book. First, I've got to transfer my balances to a 0% credit card which I have been putting off.

Too much Brad, too little useful information

There's far too much information on layering with credit cards, as most of us don't have the time or energy to do this. There's also too much emphasis on travel deals, and not enough on everyday life, from my perspective.
I've tracked bradsdeals.com online for many years and this book was a disappointment to me. I've occasionally wondered about the preponderance of credit card offers and I now understand that.
However, the book overall doesn't seem to apply to the everyday consumer, who doesn't travel much, and who just wants to save money.
Sorry, Brad. I feel ripped off.

SO much more than airline miles

I got this book after getting hooked on Brad's awesome website of great deals, expecting it to be a guide for how to use airline miles and points from credit cards to travel cheaply to amazing places. It is that, but it's also so much more.

I did not expect to come away from reading this book feeling inspired and empowered, but I did! The author talks you through the ways in which consumers are expected to shop for and buy things, and how these normal routes often cost us money or time, or both. It's true that in the examples about the opportunities he has taken advantage of, the deals and promotions that made that *specific* example work are often not in operation anymore, but what you're supposed to take away is that if you can be just a tiny bit creative and follow his lead, when an opportunity comes along you can be prepared to make it work for you. And as the author points out, these opportunities are always coming along, constantly.

Also, don't think that to get to do awesome things so cheaply has to take a ton of time, like the folks who spend entire days clipping boxes of coupons. In fact I think I only saw the word coupon twice. The focus here is NOT on obtaining possessions, or even experiences like vacations, for as cheap as humanly possible, by whatever means necessary. Rather, this is a book about harnessing the opportunities that are already out there to make the everyday things you do work for you, instead of against. And more importantly, enjoying the benefits, which means saving time as well as cash.

I won't give away specifics, but his point really hits home: if there is an easier, cheaper way to get the things you want, why on earth wouldn't you go that way? Probably two answers, at least for me, were habit, and fear of being taken advantage of. This book addresses both. The author explains what taking out new credit cards does to your credit score (spoiler alert: not what you think if you don't abuse them [really!] ), and what closing credit cards does to it. He's actually done some dangerous recon missions with his own credit, taking out 17 credit cards at one time and watching the score every day to see how it changed. So because he's tried (just about) everything with his own money on the line, you can do the things that work fearlessly and quickly. For someone painstakingly building credit from scratch, being able to benefit from his experience is just invaluable.

So it's not a list of awesome stuff you can get for free and cheap right now (again, visit his two great websites for that), but rather an overhaul for your spending habits that will let you reap all the possible rewards of things you're probably doing and buying already. Other reviewers sees this as a flaw, but there are definitely SOME do-right-now changes you can make as soon as you put the book down, especially in the personal finance section. It's just that these are tried and true standbys that you may not know about, but always exist, while the fun stuff like cool vacations and free flights are promotions changing all the time.

It's also a quick, enjoyable read; he begins each section with a story of a great trip he and his wife got to take, or a problem he solved in his own life, then backs up to explain the steps he took that made it happen, then how you can approach things in your own life to do similarly. The only thing that could have used more detail is the brief section on bringing down the costs of groceries and household items without spending a ton of time like the dreaded extreme couponers. The author mentions using Amazon (hi!) for their subscribe and save feature, which I haven't actually found to be a good value at all, but likely this is simply too region-specific and need-specific to go into detail about and have it be very useful.

Overall, a great investment for your personal finances and a great place to start being able to do the things you want with what you already have.

About the Author
Anthony D. Pellegrini is a Professor of Psychological Foundations of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. His research focuses on direct observations of aggression, play, dominance, in children and the social bases of cognitive processes. A Fellow of APA’s Educational and Developmental Psychology divisions, he is also a Traveling Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He has published numerous papers in journals and books in psychology, education, anthropology, and animal behavior.

Ella tiene buenos principios y dice que sabe tratar a un hombre. En otras palabras, es una gran candidata para cualquier caballero. Sin embargo, ¡está soltera!
Si escogiste leer este libro es porque seguramente te identificas con la mujer que acabo de describir. Tal vez te has desvivido por varios hombres y has hecho todo lo posible por que se enamoren de ti, pero no has tenido éxito en tus relaciones. Y te preguntas: ¿Qué estoy haciendo mal? ¿Por qué otras mujeres pueden encontrar el amor y yo no?
Este libro te revelará las razones por las que no has podido establecer un vínculo amoroso con un hombre que te valore y se muera por ti. En otras palabras, que “te mueva el piso” y seas correspondida. Photoshop Elements Fundamentals

I titled my review as such to make it clear what the cover of this book does not - this is basically a beginner's guide to Photoshop Elements. Which is fine, but the tiny "Focus on the fundamentals" note under the title should really be, well, more a part of the title.

That said, this book takes you through the basics of using the organizer (again, necessary only for beginners) to the benefits of tagging, sorting and searching, which is helpful even for those of us used to using photo storing and editing software. Though the book ends with another beginner-focused chapter on printing and sharing images, there is a lot of meat in chapters 3 and 4 - chapter 3 for it's step-by-step tips on everything from cropping to over- and underexposure; chapter 4 for those of us with digital SLR cameras who have the opportunity of working with RAW images.

Also helpful are the "post it notes" scattered throughout the pages of this book. Some may be a bit self-explanatory, but many include shortcut options and less obvious information, which is great.

I think of myself as an intermediate Photoshop user at best, so this book was great for me (once I realized I could skip the first and last chapters). I wouldn't suggest it for anyone who is really experienced in Photoshop, but it's definitely worth the price for beginners or not-quite-beginners who would like to know a few of the Photoshop secrets without having to dig through the software itself.

An introduction to PSE for beginners

The basics of PSE only, but for the discounted price still good for someone that does not know the first thing about using Elements.
With a few exceptions, no content for even intermediate PSE users I'd say.

Seemingly well written, software function explanations are clear and to the point for easy learning, with screen shots to clarify instructions.

Nice construction and printing as Focal Press has been using for their books, much nicer paperbacks for the money.

Expect the first 38 pages to deal with the PSE Orginizer, so be aware if you are not interested in that area of PSE.
Also, minus perhaps another 13 pages for photos and index leaves about 100 pages for actual photo manipulation instruction.

Perhaps a nice gift for someone thinking about buying Photoshop Elements, would give them a bit of insight into the software.

ONLY the Fundamentals

Focus On Photoshop Elements: Focus on the Fundamentals is a thin glossy book of the sort you might expect to find next to the photo printers at an electronics shop, merchandised for an impulse buy. Let us judge it by more than its cover.

Chapter one is a necessary evil: a short step-by-step guide to getting pictures off your camera. Chapter two covers tagging and sorting photos - the screen shots overshadowed the text, but still a quality tutorial.

Chapter three is the meat of the book: how to use the Photoshop Elements Editor. I felt that the author did a great job explaining typical tasks in terms applicable to old and newer versions of the program. My only criticism is that little effort was made to define photographic terminology that may be unfamiliar to some readers. Chapter four is more of the same, dealing with RAW image files.

Chapter five completes the book with tips on printing and backing up photos from within Elements, addressing options new users might overlook.

At only 150 image-laden pages, Focus On Photoshop Elements is far from a textbook or a technical reference, making it a perfect fit for some readers and a poor choice for others. As it does a better than adequate job providing "straightforward advice on using Photoshop Elements", three-and-a-half stars, rounded up.

About the Author
TJ O’Connor is a Department of Defense expert on information security and a US Army paratrooper. While assigned as an assistant professor at the US Military Academy, TJ taught undergraduate courses on forensics, exploitation and information assurance. He twice co-coached the winning team at the National Security Agency’s annual Cyber Defense Exercise and won the National Defense University’s first annual Cyber Challenge. He has served on multiple red teams, including twice on the Northeast Regional Team for the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.

TJ holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from North Carolina State, a Master of Science degree in Information Security Engineering from the SANS Technical Institute, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the US Military Academy. He has published technical research at USENIX workshops, ACM conferences, security conferences, the SANS Reading Room, the Internet Storm Center, the Army Magazine, and the Armed Forces Journal. He holds expert cyber security credentials, including the prestigious GIAC Security Expert (GSE) and Offensive Security Certified Expert (OSCE). TJ is a member of the elite SANS Red and Blue Team Cyber Guardians.


TJ O'Connor is an active duty Army Major and former faculty member at the United States Military Academy, where he taught courses on forensics, exploitation, and information assurance. Violent Python Libraries

Violent python is an introductory level book on python with a introductory look at security concepts in general. It is great for those who are new to the language and would like example use cases of simplistic security tools, but not for those who want to understand Python, deeply understand the security concepts covered, or using python for reliable tools.

Problems I had:

1.) This book is about python libraries and interacting with them and other programs. It is not about understanding the attack and implementing them in Python. Sure, some may be required for ease to the beginner when it comes to forensics, communicating with ssh, or integrating with other tools for complex protocols like SMB, but anything else is really not fair to those who may not be able to use the library, who have problems and need to understand why, or those who want to understand what is happening on a lower level. Examples:

1a.) Use ftplib for your ftp bruteforcer.
1b.) Use zipfile to crack zip archives.
1c.) Use os to send metasploit exploit code (your own 'conficker')/os to use msfpayload to bypass a/v.
1d.) Use smtplib to communicate with smtp (regardless of the functions being ironically similiar to the real commands).

The problem with this is it doesn't teach you how these libraries work. For example, one should show the person how to interact with FTP with the sockets library, what to send, what to look for, and then show them the easy libraries. As previosly stated, it also doesn't prepare them for issues (like programs that don't like complying with rfc standards).

2.) More exception handling. The socket code is not helpfully handled on all stages of attempted connection. Debugging why something isn't working for a beginner is going to be a nightmare especially later on for point 3. He talks about exception handling, but integrates it very loosely. This plays into many people's issues on other sites with the author's script quality. Good exception handling or even print statements should be covered if you're going to be teaching a new person and something breaks on them.

3.) Thread safety doesn't seem to be an issue that's handled. Because of the GIL (global interpreter lock) threads can not expand cores when using cython (the default python interpreter). This means that you have a thread limit on the process/core and this causes problems for speed and for thread handling when you start really using it. When doing a portscan or communicating to a server with threads, the host or port may go down, you may get blocked, etc. and the thread can die. It becomes a huge problem especially because it doesn't maintain state and doesn't resend a failed attempt. But violent python libraries strike again and you'll just integrate nmap scans for your portscans anyway.

Well, with the issues out of the way, let's talk about what this book does well. I do believe that the forensics sections of this book are good. The descriptions are more in-depth and I've always seen forensics as "what do I have in my toolbag", which makes sense when bringing in all of the thirdparty libraries for the forensics sections. Then it gets down to using scapy. Once he starts using scapy, everything is much more informative due to the level and quality of information. No longer are you using a library for....logging into an ftp server, but you start crafting and analyzing packets raw packets. This allows a much needed understanding of what is happening in the script and with the packets/network at the same time.

My Python is Getting Violent

I'd been looking forward to this book for over a month so when it arrived last week I tented my hands like Mr. Burns. I finally finished chapter 1 and can officially declare this book to be awesome.

I was recommending it to a friend yesterday morning when he said "you didn't need the introduction to python chapter did you?" I started laughing and told him that in the "introduction" chapter you:

[+]Set up your development environment.
[+]Write and subsequently make several modifications to a vulnerability scanner.
[+]Write a password hash cracker and are then asked to go, on your own, to modify it to crack SHA512 hashes as well.
[+]Write a .zip file password cracker and then modify it so that it's multithreaded.

Any of those could have been final projects in a lot of books so that should give you an idea of how packed full of information this book is.

If you're python is limited (like mine) you'll be doing a decent amount of Google searches to look further into certain commands. If you're brand new to python I would zip through a free online course to get the basics of the language structure before you tackle this book.

While Violent Python is in the "We're going to do some cool stuff, keep up" style, I never once felt confused or frustrated. The code is clear, easy to understand and a quick trip to Google always filled in any gaps.

I usually wait until I'm finished with a book to review it but with this one that could take a while. I've found myself using the code in this book as building blocks for other similar ideas I have in my head so I've been building those before I move on. These modifications have helped me truly understand the topics presented rather than trying to knock out the book ASAP.

Not for an expert, not for a beginner

TL;DR - go directly to the conclusion.

This book is really weird. It shows since the beginning its nature, as stated by the book itself: a cookbook. A set of recipes to do something effectively, one would expect. It is, instead, a series of examples of how replicating some pretty old attack in a pretty bad manner. The reasons why I say this?

- the code is bad:
- it looks like "the Python antipattern cookbook", that is "how not to code in Python" (too long list of examples here, but some: exception handling generally absent and when present it's a "catch-all", namespace pollution, old-style classes)
- it completely ignores best practices, code reuse, multithreading, isolation, synchronization, good design
- the attacks are very old:
- everything you learn in this book is pointless nowadays
- the rationale and explanations are generally absent:
- it doesn't explain why something is done in that way: it just goes "we do this, and this, and this, et voilà!". The consequence is that it's useless for a beginner since he can't learn anything new, and it's useless for an expert, since it's too basic to be useful
- there's no troubleshooting at all: what if something doesn't work out of the box? Users reported non-working scripts from the book
- it doesn't explain why we're choosing a library instead of another, a single statement "it's faster", "it's more reliable", "I like it" is better than nothing
- it doesn't explain how those libraries work, what can be really done, how to exploit their potential for our use
- every example is self-contained and can't be easily reused: it doesn't help building an arsenal
- it does poor use of the plethora of Python-based security tools out there
- attacks are not optimized for parallelism: the Python has the GIL, that renders pretty useless the threading module. But also, it has the multiprocessing approach that can circumvent this problem. Unfortunately the author never uses or mention it

Someone may say that "security people" shouldn't waste time with programming practices, but that's wrong. Security researchers have always been good programmers by need, and still are. If the code is bad and the attacks are less than practical, what's the point?

On the other hand, a good point: the Forensics Investigation chapter is pretty good. Also, if I understood correctly, it has been written by a different contributing author.

== Conclusion:
I wouldn't buy it again, and, no, I am not happy of the money I spent. It wasn't even cheap.
