Learning how to believe in your talent

I believe strongly that the key to winning an audition lies in identifying the stresses that affect all musicians and performing artists, and learning how to become more comfortable with your abilities by accepting both your strenths and weaknesses. Winning an audition is a game, and whatever you can do to prepare yourself psychologically is a help. This book categorises the psychological activity that accompanies the lead up to an audition or performance, and allows you to set up a regime of positive thinking and relaxation that will inspire you to achieve more from each of your successive performances. I think it is an absolutely essential addition to any serious musician who really is determined to pursue their dreams. Too many of us engage in "doomsday thinking", and don't allow ourselves to find out what we could really achieve if we just gave ourselves a fighting chance. Obviously you don't have to use everything in the book, but as a professional violinist, i highly recommend it to any of my colleagues who have problems focusing on achieving a good performance in the meager ten munites that we often have to prove ourselves.

Full of useful ideas

After spending my teens and twenties playing rock and roll, I began playing the cello at 29 and a decade later now play at a professional level. Along the way I have experienced plenty of psychological bruises in performance situations--which, thanks to this book, I learned were self-inflicted. "Performance Success" has provided me with plenty of "right-mind" ideas for dealing with performance anxiety, which I have tried out successfully on stage. If you've ever dealt with nerves before performances or auditions, this book is a must-read!

very good resource for performance artists

This is a very good book for performance artists, not only for musicians. The strategies and exercises for performing at your optimal under situations of high pressure are effective. Nonetheless, sometimes I thought they were oversimplified. The exercises explained in the book DO work, however, I thought that the lenght of time proposed in the book to practice and master them are unrealistic. I don't think that after practicing and performing without an intense focus for many years I could just make it happen in one week by just practicing it a couple of minutes a day. I know it takes (at least to myself) many months even a couple of years to train my mind to be in the "here and now" every single minute I play. What this book did for me was to create a new awareness of how should I approach my practice time, what kind of exercises to do to be better prepared for a big event and what kind of mental state I should be pursuing in the moments leading to and during performance.

About the Author
Joshua Kinser is a writer and musician. Growing up by the beaches of Pensacola, Florida, Kinser would head up to the mountains of North Carolina every summer and cater to his passion for hiking and backpacking. Feeding into his love of travel and hunger for new experiences, those early past-times led him to make a profession of writing travel guides, magazine articles, and outdoor-adventure guidebooks.

With regular stints as a wildlife biology field technician for the U.S. Forest Service, Kinser also finds himself these days in back country in Florida, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in Montana's Glacier National Park, and in California's National Forest lands surrounding Yosemite National Park. Indulging his cultural side, Kinser also is a professional drummer performing in wedding bands, clubs, and in cruise ship orchestras. Aboard the latter, he has drummed his way along the perimeters of Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand, Borneo, and South Korea.

As an accomplished author, Kinser wrote Moon Handbook's 2011 guidebook FLORIDA GULF COAST, third Edition. In 2010 alone, he published more than 200 articles online for websites such as Trails.com, Ehow, and USA Today Travel. Completing his degree in Journalism from Pensacola State College in December 2010, he also has worked as a staff writer for Gannet with the PENSACOLA NEWS JOURNAL.

Contains everything you need to know

I have never reviewed a book for anyone, and I have bought hundreds. I bought this book because I live in the Charlotte area and have some down time from thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, but limited time to hike. I will have no more that 6-10 hours a week to do a walk/hike. This book is very complete. No one needs anything else to be ready to find the trail, and hike the trail. No confusion. Written in a clear, well thought through manner, which is a quick aid to someone who has been hiking for years, or someone who wants to see what walking in a nice place is all about. No one will regret owning this go-to guide. The confidence it gave you approaching and during your first hike you planned using this book will make the cost well worth it. The trails it talks about will always be there in my life time. Somebody will find this book on my shelf when I die. I am 72 years old and been hiking/running/walking this planet for a long time.

Very useful

This is a great book. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for a couple of problems. The GPS coordinates are usually very good and useful but I found one that was way off. The maps and the descriptions don't always match up well. Maps sometimes have intersections not addressed in the description and sometimes it isn't clear whether the description is for a clockwise or counterclockwise loop. These are relatively minor complaints and are easy to deal with.

Helps to plan your hiking excursions

I had the privilege of meeting Ms. Friend just after this book was released. She was speaking at a monthly meeting for one of the Florida trail groups. I had just finished hiking her book 50 Hikes in Central Florida and I was anxious for another volume that would help me to explore local hiking trails. I found just that in Five-Star Trails: Orlando.

The beauty of Sandra Friend's trail guides are that they offer a personalized view of trails. The descriptions provided are from a first-hand perspective and provide a good baseline for a hiker headed out to one of these trails. Each hike entry includes a "statistics" page which gives length of hike, location, facilities, etc. Then there is a brief overview paragraph, followed by a play-by-play of the trail. At the end of the entry Nearby Attractions and Directions are two must-have sections that help the hiker to plan their day.

Hikes are grouped geographically, but there is a second grouping that let's you view them by interest. Both are helpful depending on whether you want to plan your outing by location or by activity. The introduction contains great information for beginning hikers, and the index is well-organized. Regardless whether you are a beginner or expert hiker, this book has something to offer. Even if you subscribe to Sandra Friend's newsletter and website, this is a great self-contained resource that will introduce you to the hikes around Orlando, and one you can use to plan your time on local nature trails.

Great work of profound importance (for enviros & academics)

Through a plethora of filters including cultural studies, rhetoric, political economy, postmodernism, critical studies, media studies, activism, and environmental studies, DeLuca strongly introduces the image event, an ideograph of profound political and social implications. The author explores these image events through the tactics and strategies of radical environmental and environmental justice groups. Expertly, he deconstructs the notion of a public sphere, as grounded in today's televisual mass mediated society. Rebuffing an ideal Habermassian public sphere in which all parties and sides can equally and civilly debate issues of any interest, DeLuca questions whether all individuals are welcome to enter into that debate, a debate which today occurs in the mass media. Looking at four nonviolent environmental and environmental justice groups, DeLuca argues that the success of their protests against hegemonic forces now lies in the image event itself rather than the immediate cessation of the offense in question. Success comes about through a direct action: Forcing people (audiences) out of comfortable ignorance into a questioning of the status quo (pp. 1-3). The violent counterresponses (pp. 8-9) from the corporations and governments being protested, in light of the failed (inability to stop the present offense) direct actions by the environmental groups, underscores the author's contention of the redefinition of success. Through this challenge of the mainstream discourse (industrialism and progress) (p. 6), the direct actions of the groups DeLuca analyzes become symbolically charged, expected to fail in immediate terms. Success instead comes through increased visibility and public support. By challenging the legitimacy of the establishment" (p. 15), the groups are, according to DeLuca, considering "the implications for rhetoric of extralinguistic confrontational activities" (p. 15). To critical rhetorical scholars, DeLuca becomes one of the vanguards who asserts that the visual realm, which has for too long been ignored by the field, is not only as important, but more so than spoken or written rhetoric in the political public sphere. Through this analysis, DeLuca explores how radical environmental groups are reconstituting the identity of the dominant culture (p. 16) rather than forming their own. In conclusion, this work is of great importance to the academy, especially the field of rhetoric. DeLuca's book begins to fill the dearth of work on media and the environment. It begins anew the research of social movements in this postmodern era. Importantly, it gifts the activist groups legitimacy and credence, which does have the potential to greater effect social change, an ideal conditional for every work in the academy.

Great, Creative Take on Work in Rhetoric!

In this book, DeLuca says that he aims to "perform a postmodern critical rhetoric" (and he does!) examining "image events" created by environmental activists such as Earth First!, Green Peace, and even more interestingly, anti-pollution activists (very grass roots) in Kentucky. In a nicely scattered array of chapters, DeLuca poses his argument that image events can do things (make change) while also being appropriated and rendered inert in various ways. Reading this book, one can only wonder how it would have been changed if the anti-WTO protests of N30, 1999 would have been considered -- but that is not a shortcoming: the book is thorough and very well written. Great scholarship!

A good read and a handy reference

The author has done a wonderful job of writing an engaging book about the history and future of DVRs. This book is insightful; it starts by providing a good industry reference point and expands to address the business models, impacts to traditional advertising, and future growth of the industry. I found it to be a good read and a handy reference. This is a great book for anybody in the Broadcast, Cable, Direct Broadcast Satellite, IPTV or other related media industries.

Fascinating material but difficult reading

The book was fascinating but as it was translated from the French the wording and puncutation is often awkard. It was very difficult to stay focused while reading this book. It uses lots and lots of foreign terms/words and at times I felt I was reading a book written in a foreign lancuage. The author also seemed to assume the reader was already thoroughly familiar with the basics of the matertial presented so he jumped right into technical jargon. If you read for pleasure I wouldn't recommend this book.

For many centuries in "civilized" Europe, the mostpopular form of mass entertainment was watching other people being putto death in horrible ways. This phenomenon reached its apex (or if you will, its nadir) during the Roman empire, with the infamous games of the amphitheater. As Roland Auguet relates, in his recent book, Cruelty and Civilization, the games had their origin in the funeral customs of wealthy Etruscan families, who would compel a few of their slaves to kill each other in ritual combat as a form of sacrifice to appease the spirit of the deceased. By the time of Caesar Augustus, these gladiatorial combats had pretty much lost any vestige of a religious character and become huge spectacles, organized with all the style of big budget Hollywood productions. Like the blockbuster movie, they often featured a cast of thousands. The big difference was that in the Roman shows, the blood was real, the stunts weren't faked, and the stars really died. Everyone loved the games. The most respectable women in Rome, the Vestal Virgins, had their own reserved seating so they could have a close-up view of men being hacked to pieces, disembowelled, or torn apart by wild animals. Roman fathers would take their sons to see murder done for the same reasons they'd take them to a hockey game today; it was good clean fun. The Romans revelled in violence in a way that is hard for us to accept or understand. In Cruelty and Civilization, Mr. Auguet promises us something more than just a standard narrative history of the Roman games; he also proposes to offer some kind of psycho-moral analysis. Unfortunately, he is such a slavish admirer of Roman culture that he can't bring himself to see it clearly. Right at the beginning of the book, he asserts that "there is nothing more incompatible with the Roman mentality than the form of cruelty known as sadism." - in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. Having ruled out the most natural and logical explanation for the games - that the Romans, like all human beings, had their dark side - Auguet is then unable to come up with any alternative theory. He raises all the usual questions but doesn't provide any new answers. So why did he bother to write the book? And why should we bother to read it?

To Read or Not To Read

The previous reviewers are all correct on the matter of this book-very uneven writing style and an odd presentation of Roman history. But perhaps the reason could be that this is an English translation of a French book...maybe. However, the book has some strong redeeming factors that make it worthy of your perusing. It's more than just a description of gladiator activities, the book covers all the big games popular in Roman society-even a little on theater and the torture dramas.The author does seem to know his Roman history(even though it's not presented well). He unexpectedly uses this knowledge(at odd intervals) to flesh out some of the nuances to the political and religious side of the games. Personally,I found the coverage of chariot racing quite fascinating. As others have stated already,if you're looking for a good coverage of gladiators, Michael Grant's book is the one. If animals in the arena interest you, then Daniel Mannix's book is good. But if you've read a little on this subject already, this book will add a few facts that you probably didn't know.

Useful and Concise

I read this book to refresh my basic grasp of television technology concepts, and for that purpose it worked perfectly. Organized into small sections which build slowly from simple ideas (electricity basics) to complex tools (video servers). The book also includes a useful list of further reading material and a reference glossary.

The volume centers on the rapid growth of handloom weaving in response to the introduction of water powered spinning. This change is viewed from the perspectives of mechanics, technological limitations, characteristics of weaving, skills, income and cost. In the works of Duncan Bythell and Norman Murray the displacement of British and Scottish hand weavers loomed large and the silence of American handloom weavers in similar circumstances was deafening. This study reflects the differences between the three culture by centering not on displacement but on survival. Persistence is closely tied to the gradual nature of technological change. The contrasts between independent commercial artisans and outwork weavers are striking. Displacement occurs but only among artisans devoting their time to independent workshop weaving. Alternatively outwork weavers adapted to changing markets and survived. The design and development of spinning and weaving device is stressed, as are the roles of economic conditions, management organization, size of firms, political implications and social factors contribute to the impact of technological change on outwork and craft weavers.
