An Excellent Addition to Your Strategic Theory Library

This book is a compilation of essays that were presented at a Clausewitz conference in 1986. Given the nature of strategic theory and Clausewitz, twenty years doesn't necessary make something outmoded. In the case of strategic theory, we seem to be living through a particularly dark period in the US, where our sense of strategy, or even the existence of a "strategic culture" is in question. Political and even military leaders mix up "strategy" with "objectives", failing hopelessly to see that the former allows for the achievement of the latter through the use of the military instrument, not the two terms being one in the same. That Clausewitz is still basic to strategic thought should be obvious to even the most narrow-minded of technocrats at this point since the fiasco in Iraq has been shown to be very much a "political" struggle by nature, regardless of the range of military "grammar" applied.

The essays include the subjects or Guerrilla warfare, intelligence, "time and space", chance and uncertainty, and various ways that Clausewitz had been misperceived in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Of particular interest is the essay by Martin van Creveld entitled "The Eternal Clausewitz". In it van Creveld argues convincingly that Clausewitz's approach of dealing with war not as an object of scientific study (as in attempting to develop a positivist theory or "cook book" as vC puts it), but as a complexity of social interaction, and using scientific methodology - looking at war from a social science perspective - while at the same time considering war also from a philosophical perspective, ensures his lasting relevance.

One has to asked, "what happened?" concerning van Creveld, who has since dismissed Clausewitz through an obvious misreading of the Clausewitzian "trinity". . . In my opinion this change of heart has more to do with van Creveld's political views, than with strategic thought, since misunderstanding Clausewitz's meanings is hardly the case.

This book is more for the advanced student of strategic theory, not so much the beginner, although Michael I. Handel's essay on "Clausewitz in the Age of Technology" does provide an excellent primer on applying Clausewitz to modern warfare.

Useful essays

This book is a collection of essays that came out of a conference on Clausewitz held at the Army War College. The entire book is extremely useful, but I found the most useful essays to be “The Eternal Clausewitz”, by Martin van Creveld, which argues that On War remains relevant because Clausewitz does not try to discover the existence of constants in an area where no scientific laws exist. Instead, he accepts ambiguity and uncertainty as the essence of war, and this proceeds logically to Herbig’s essay on uncertainty in On War. All of the essays from section II are very useful, as they spend time on the theoretical dimensions of war. Especially interesting were Kahn’s essay on Clausewitz and intelligence, Hahlweg’s essay on Clausewitz and guerrilla warfare and Herbig’s essay on Clausewitz and uncertainty. In her essay, Herbig discusses these concepts of ambiguity and uncertainty within the context of four issues: 1) the nature of war; 2) the military genius; 3) the link between chance and uncertainty; and 4) the alternatives for action.

Once you have read this book, and if your brain is still functioning, I suggest that you read “Clausewitz, Nonlinearity, and the Unpredictability of War “, by Alan Beyerchen, and “Reclaiming the Clauswitzian Trinity”, by Christopher Bassford and Edward J. Villacres, which do a good job of supplementing Herbig’s essay and gives a clearer explanation on this uncertainty principle.

Arleen Shearer Mariotti is a retired educator having served the field of education for over 35 years, most recently as a classroom teacher at Adams Middle School, Tampa FL and Staff Development Trainer with Hillsborough County Public Schools. She currently is an adjunct literacy instructor at the University of South Florida and a national trainer for Population Connection.

Susan P. Homan is a Professor of literacy at the University of South Florida, author of over 30 published articles, and conducts professional workshops in the state of Florida. She is Director of the Literacy Innovation for Education (LIFE) initiative which links business and education to benefit struggling readers and the community.

I ordered this textbook for my grad study course. It is a well printed and readable textbook. However, I did not find it very useful for the course it was recommend for. It did not provide detailed information for the course. The syllabus questions could not be adequately addressed using this textbook. I had to actually use other more comprehensive sources and online resources to compensate for the textbook. I purchased it because the school had it as a requirement for the course. I recommend buying this book used and not new or renting a copy for the course.

Adding a valuable chapter on ethical egoism, the second edition updates the discussions and extremely useful lists of further readings. The addition of “empirical readings” is especially welcome. The second edition of the textbook by Mark Timmons on normative ethics constitutes a significant improvement on what was already a superb achievement. Timmons discusses the basic ideas and new developments in moral theory, and he presents arguments in such a clear fashion that advanced undergraduates will love the text. About the Author
Mark Timmons is professor of philosophy at the University of Arizona. He has published extensively on topics in moral theory, metaethics, and Kant’s ethics. He is author of Morality without Foundations (1999) and editor of Oxford Studies in Normative Ethics.

Content is excellent, Kindle formatting is not!

This is an excellent book to use along with an anthology for strong students new to ethical theory. Until problems with the Kindle edition are fixed, however, Imsuggest getting it in another format. Really, that's all I want to convey I've already contracted to publisher about the problems. Perhaps the worst issue is a numbering problem with the numbering of steps in inset arguments. When arguments are presented, the numbers are incorrect after the first step or two. The first couple of steps might be marked 1, 2, but then after some explanation, the next steps, which should be, 3, 4, etc., revert to 1, 2. The text might go on to refer to steps 5 or 6, but all the reader gets is a lot of steps labeled 1 or 2. This needs to be fixed. Timmons has made an effort to build and analyze arguments step by step; this formatting error means that readers too must expend effort in order to figure out the correct numbering (i.e., is it really a new 1, 2, or should this continue as 3, 4?) Not hard for me, but not something I want my students to have to deal with. I cannot recommend this version to my students. And I'm not pleased to have spent $17 for it myself! I've also found the endnotes to be non-operational. But I'm reading on an iPad; maybe they work on a Kindle. Not sure.

Clarret & Blue Skies from out of the fog of West Ham History

If ever I required someone to give serious granulation on the history of West Ham...Ben Sharrat seems to be the man.
Ben ensures maximum buy-in from the reader with some superb strategisation simply squaring the circle that is West Ham.
I eagerly await Ben's next book, having heard through the grapevine that it will focus on the key metrics and standardisation of herding cats. Lets hope he runs this idea up the flagpole to see who salutes it before coming to a landing on it, as there is sure to be much knitting of fog before he sees blue skies.

Mariani's latest ends up as bit of a "Pocahontas" adventure (or Avatar for the slightly more youthful of us) with this ripping eighth installment for ex-SAS man "Don't-You-Call-Me-'Major'" Ben Hope.
This time it's as personal as his foray in 'The Mozart Conspiracy' when he opens with Brooke being kidnapped along with ex-M15-now-turned-Clive-Cussler-wreck-hunter character, Sir Roger Forsyte, head of Neptune Marine Exploration, who is currently announcing the company's "biggest coup since Sir Roger founded the company". He's just located the 1588 wreck of a Spanish Armada ship, the Santa Teresa, off the coast of Donegal. Everyone's off to Ireland to see what's going to happen. Just like in the last novel, there's a swift car-crash kidnapping and murder with the beautiful Brooke being the unfortunate victim of the latest psychotic megalomaniac, Ramon Serrato. This time her looks save her as she bears an uncanny resemblance to the dead wife of the murdering drug lord and she's whisked off to her own personal jungle Mandalay.
This, of course, sends Ben over the edge, as he trots off to Belfast after a quick call with Boonie to hunt down one Fergus Doyle, dishing out his own particular brand of violence on a group who are more smoked than the proverbial red herring. The latter, of course, turns out to be the true facts, the scene being merely a filler and insight into Ben's tendency to be trigger happy. Mariani gets his emotional hero back on track with a visit to Spain, has him team up with Nico - a cop with a bit more punch, a heck of a motive, and coarse language to boot; more so than the likes of Luc Simon or Darcey Kane -, and then the pair of them head out to a steamy South American jungle for a denouement with the deranged Serrato.
Hard to say more without giving major spoilers away so I'll leave it at that. Suffice it to say, this one's pretty good. Much better than the last one, the pace is jumpy, the characters edgier, Ben's struggle with the morality of his actions now familiar, yet still, crucially, present.
So, I've completed my Ben Hope marathon read and I've enjoyed it. I'll look out for future novels for sure. I thought I'd put them in order of favourite reads because...well, why not, eh? So here goes (from best to...not best):

More of the same, but a bit rushed

If you've read the rest of the Ben Hope series and enjoyed them, you will enjoy this to a point. It moves Bens live along nicely but I felt the last couple of chapters were very rushed and it kind of fizzled out towards the end. Strangely, even though the ending was rushed, there were parts of the book that were a bit dragged out. I think this would have worked better as a short story rather than a full novel. Its more of a gap filler in the Ben Hope world than anything else.

Scott Mariani has done it again! In this latest Ben Hope, things get truly personal. Someone close to Ben is missing, and he will stop at nothing to find them! Without offering any spoilers, let's just say that this tale takes him from the Emerald Isle to much further reaches. I read this in two sittings, and would have done it in one had I not had to work! Gripping, and keeps the reader wanting to find out what is next. Highly recommended!

A book for the devoted Caglistro-buff

There's really only one single reason as to why anyone would ever want to read Count Cagliostro, and that's if you're very, VERY, interested in the individual with the same name; this bizarre man who lived in the 1700s, travelled all over Europe and managed to create all sorts of attention wherever he went.

But don't get me wrong, this is not a bad biography. Quite the contrary, actually. If you want to gain an insight into who he was, who he met and spent time with, where he came from, where he went, what he did, and especially how his surroundings reacted to his presence, then by all means read this book. There are tons of different names and places mentioned, which sometimes makes it a little difficult to remember it all (well, very often, to be perfectly honest), but it rarely gets boring.

So who is this Cagliostro character, then? Well, different people will give you different answers, but there's no doubt that he actually did exist. Some of his personas include magician, alchemist, healer, and founder of Egyptian Masonry, and even if he indeed was a fake - which his critics are convinced he was - numerous people claimed he had healed them, and at the peak of his popularity he had several dedicated followers who say his as a prophet and more or less were willing to do anything for him.

However, powerful men have powerful enemies, and Count Cagliostro was no exception. He was especially good at pissing off men of the established medical science, but the priest and clergy didn't look too kindly to him, either. Thus he ended his life locked in a cell, alone and deserted, gloomy and miserable.

But perhaps I should clarify what I hinted at at the beginning of this review. This book is only for the ones dedicated to really get to know Cagliostro, because even though much of the book deals with the occult, magic, and spiritism; it's always HIS versions of the occult, magic, and spiritism that is being dealt with. The phenomena themselves are never really analyzed, their history, development, influence on contemporary society, and so on, and at the end of the book you're never really told what the fate of Cagliostro really meant, how he affected the world around him (besides his obvious antagonists, obviously) and how history has come to look at him. Suddenly the books comes to and end, and you're left with all these questions you wished you had the answer too.

On the other hand, Photiadès wrote this book because he wanted to tell the story about Cagliostro, and with that he succeeded, there's no doubt about that. And good, too.

So perhaps I was just the wrong reader for this particular book?
