Francis G. Castles is Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the Research School of Social Sciences at Australian National University and at the Center for Social Policy Research (CeS) in Bremen.

Stephan Leibfried is Professor of Public Policy at the University of Bremen, Director of the Collaborative Research Center "Transformations of the State" (TranState) and member of the Unit History and Institutions of the Center for Social Policy Research (CeS) there.

Jane Lewis is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, a Fellow of the British Academy, and a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The absolute best introduction to the field

This book should be the first on every aspiring filmmakers shelf, and should be the next addition for every filmmaker who is already hard at work. Evans presents the information in a practical, well thought out format and supplies plenty of examples, sources of further information, and a ton of helpful internet links. If this book doesn't have enough depth for you, it will certainly point you in the right direction. The examples used are familiar films, both current and clasic (and of every genre), as well as examples from low budget and student films. All of these elements form the best book I've read about filmmaking aimed at the industrious DV pioneer. This book was actually more helpful than 4 years of film school classes. Buy this book, read it, and go make some movies.

Tells you Everything you know!!!

This book is fantastic. Evans outlines everything from the direction that audio waves are received depending on which external mic is used, to the compression rate for web movies. The book is incredibly up to date, as it should be considering it just came out. The set up of the book is very much like the 'for dummies' series, considering that there are projects along the way for you to undertake to sharpen your skills, along with info and ww link boxes. Most other books out there just outline what you need to do but don't tell you how to do things. This book really tells you what is going on when your making a film, and just doesn't say, if you do this then the picture will look pretty. He gets technical, and that's what needs to be said to give people getting into this a better understanding of what they are doing . He starts off with a great intro, for those who are just getting into digital filmmaking it really outlines what needs to be done to succeed. He identifies each technical aspect that he is going to cover, and then goes on to explain how you need to get to know your camera. Its obvious that a ton of research has been put into this book, as it really tells you everything you could possibly need to know. If you buy this book first then there really is no need for any other book out there. I've read this book cover to cover 1 time so far, and plan on reading it 2 more times.

Great book

The book itself is excellent and answered most of my questions. The depth of the book is in the supporting material. So many internet links to great content can take you months to read if you wanted to spend the time. Very intelligent in the layout. It gives you exercises to complete before you go to the next step and the exercises are designed to get you to know yourself as film maker and to get to know your equipment and tools (ie limitations). This book goes a long way in helping you realize yourself as a DV film maker.

About the Author

Michael A. Cusumano is the Sloan Management Review Distinguished Professor of Management and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, with a joint appointment in MIT's Engineering Systems Division. He specializes in strategy, product development, and entrepreneurship in the software business. He has consulted for more than 50 major firms around the world and is the author or co-author of 8 books. The Business of Software was named one of the top business books of 2004 by Steve Lohr of the New York Times. The international best-seller Microsoft Secrets (1995, with Richard Selby), has been translated into 14 languages. A valuable guide in the age of cloud-enabled business

Professor Cusumano's "Staying Power" is a major contribution in the field of business strategy.

I am in the business of technology and management strategy consulting and think his ideas have enormous value to any executive grappling with the implications and opportunities of cloud-computing enabled business. His six principles are easy to grasp. They are deceptively simple and are particularly powerful in a commercial and public sector business climate of austerity where new business models are emerging that will fuel our next growth cycle, but are disrupting incumbents. The introduction of cloud computing is beginning to have a disruptive effect on a wide range of business. Living through that disruption in day-to-day business can make it hard to see the bigger patterns at play and think through what the future state will look like. Professor Cusumano's elaboration of the platform/complementer services model with his excellent historical context and current market analysis makes it much clearer where we are headed in my industry and to seize emerging opportunities.

I purchased the book based on an Amazon recommendation and I am very grateful I did. The book is written in a more academic style than is typical of the more popular style business and management books. In fact, I picked it up and sat it down several times before committing to the book. It is not a book designed to skim. It requires concentration and focus to understand how Professor Cusumano has reached the conclusions he has. His ability to characterize the current disruptive innovation cycle in the information technology business using his analysis of the history of both the information technology and automotive industry is excellent. It is a fascinating story leading up to today's new business models.

Once I started really focusing on the book, I could not put it down. My copy is full of highlighter pen marks and 3M stickers. Kudos to Professor Cusumano for a valuable tool for business executives trying to figure out how to proactively take advantage of the cloud-enabled business models that are emerging. I hope that he extends this work with additional video and supplementary blog or presentation materials to continue to expand on his ideas and share more examples of the ideas in action. I have already begun converting his ideas into execution in my business.

Why managers should read "Staying Power"

"Staying Power" is one of these rare books on strategic management that is both thoughtful and engaging. The author uses real examples and established companies from different industries and different countries, to illustrate a number of principles that hold for all companies. The "six enduring principles" presented in the book may not be obvious at first, but they are fundamental principles to guide you in improving the performance of your company or business unit, new or mature, small or large. The principles come alive with the examples. The examples are so vivid and well told that any experienced manager will be able to feel inside the respective company, looking carefully at the case in point and interiorizing what each principle is about and how to put it in practice in her or his company or business unit. This book is not a "quick read", but you can read it effectively one principle (one chapter) at a time. Your time will be very well rewarded.

Must read book on technology strategy

Staying Power book builds upon the material covered in his earlier books "business of software" and "platform leadership" and takes it to the next level. This book is a good read for anyone connected with software strategy or for senior executives in a technology company. Cusumano has taught strategy courses at MIT for over 15 years and he lays down some of the fundamental strategies for attaining and maintaining a leadership position in a technology industry.

Even when making a formal portrait, look for serendipitous moments that exude the magic of childhood (even if just tugging on one’s toe).
Look for natural fill light. Here the white blanket redirects the window light and provides a natural-looking fill to the little girl’s face.
Here I captured both the natural light in the space and still froze the motion of the father and son.

It is good to remember that exposure to childhood is both a blessing and a responsibility. Because we are interacting with children at a time when their little minds are forming opinions and attitudes about the world and themselves, we must remember that our experiences together will be a part of their life's foundation. The memories created therein will be further reinforced by the document of that experience, the photograph! Don't mistake it otherwise, this time together will be remembered. This is a great opportunity to develop their inner selves, as well as our own.

I wrote this book to inspire the "artist-photographer" inside each of us. By understanding our own objectives for photographing childhood, and with a bit of technical know-how, we can create images of childhood that are genuine and true to ourselves. If your child subject is predetermined, try to capture their best self by locating that aspect through collaboration with them. If you have a choice, cast a child that naturally embodies your photographic goals. Either way, let childhood be your muse! Photographing with a stringent adherence to your goals and without consideration of the child will always yield disappointing results. When working with children, you set the stage and fully prepare with your goals in mind, but then allow the serendipity of your time together to dictate the photograph.

Essential tips for amateurs

I have to recommend this to all parents. Lately, it seems everyone is an amateur photographer. My case is no different- especially where my child is concerned. We are only planning on having one child and I don't just want to take quick shots of him here and there. I want his photos to be a creative and beautiful documentation of his growth without having to take a million shots to get the perfect one.

Needless to say, my photography is improving, because of this book. While it gives tips directed at professional photography, it's all explained simply enough and its so useful for anyone who wants to commit even a little time to capturing quality images of their child. Just flipping through the book will give you great ideas, even if you realistically can't capture their level of professionalism.

Just a few of my favorite points:

You will learn the history of photography and see famous photographer's pictures of children and pictures photographers took who started photographing when they were children- probably unnecessary but inspiring none the less.

Love love love the suggestions on how to approach a photography session and how to treat the child. This might be the best information that I came away with from this book. You cannot, and should not, take a picture of a child who does not want to be photographed, and you can affect how the child feels about being photographed by the way you approach the session and treat the child.

Light sources are so important, all sorts of explanations and tips on that. This is the only area that I found a lay photographer might not find practical. She talks quite a bit about professional light sources like strobes and reflectors. I don't own these and I probably never will, but at least I understand their use now.

I will definitely continue to use this book for understanding and inspiration as my child grows.

Superb text

Most photography books these days are either coffee table books featuring little more than a collection of photographs or basic texts that spend too much time detailing the interaction among ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Here, though, we have an excellent resource that combines the art with the science, and that serves as a tutorial for the photographer wanting to accomplish more than simply well-formed images. That this happens to be in the context of photographing childhood would be almost by-the-way were it not for the author's incorporation of not only historic photographers of note in the field, but of newer work from contemporary artists as well.

It's clear that the author enjoys the use of TS lenses, as we see on the front cover of the book and on several illustrative photos throughout the text, but this interest does not otherwise color the material presented. A goodly amount of material is presented toward the end of the text with regard to digital workflow, again something that will be particularly appreciated by those who are moving from simply collecting their photos in various folders scattered upon their hard drive to a Lightroom/Aperture approach combined with Photoshop. But most of the book, happily, focuses upon the art, the method, and the insights discovered by the author-artist, all making for an enjoyable and informative number of hours.

Focal Press has done an expert job with the printing, and it's always nice to have an extra gray card handy - this is incorporated into the cover.

Insightful but esoteric

Photographing Childhood

I've read several basic photo books but I was interested to see what approach or insight "Photographing Childhood" might have.

The book has an unconventional layout. The first section is really somewhat of history lesson that briefly covers the bio's of historical photographers who the author thinks made innovative approaches to child/family photography. Some are big names, some a bit obscure.

The second section is a bit more of a "how to" technical report on camera basics, F-stops, DOF and other mechanics. If you were a total beginner you might get some idea about them, though you would certainly not master them from these level of coverage. For the experienced photographer this section can be skipped.

The real "insight" of the book was the way the author broke photographing childhood into three different styles. Journalistic, idealistic and fanciful. Journalistic is pretty much coverage, Fanciful is artistic staging for maximum impact. The author covered each in reasonable detail. You rapidly get the impression the author likes the fanciful best.

The book concludes with another bio survey of current photographers the author feels are influential in the field.

There are of course lots of pictures, the author seems to really have a thing for tilt shift lenses and pictures with arbitrary depth of field lines in them. I suppose the artistic crowd might go for that but the tilt-shift lenses (and the skill the to use them right) are not something the average shutter monkey has laying around.

All and all it was a good read and had some interesting insight. I felt the layout with all the bio's seemed a little out of place for the title but it was good background info. This book is best for photographers who already have a command of the technical basics of photography and are looking for ideas on the subject to be more creative.

Very good reference on improving school attendance. Case studies and sample attendance policy included. Motivating students to go to school regularly and punctually is not enough; children's education is a collaboration of school, parents/carers, local community and government. This is probably The best book I have read on the Pilgrimage Unfortunately the book itself is out of print. The publishers might bring out a reprint and then I will order two copies from Amazon. Extracts from the book can be found under the travel section of the Telegraph Online Newspaper look under Yahoo for this newspaper. Terrific resource!

This book is a great resource and I love to use it at the Children's Hospital for the CPE chaplaincy students. Very useful and easy to read through. Very practical.

Pastoral Care for Children

I am just ordering this book to read, but I welcome writing a critical review. It has been highly recommended me to me by the Chaplain of a major hospital who uses it with children. I am especially looking forward to receiving insight from the section on psychological needs of children who are facing illness. I intend to use this in my ministry of caring for children in our congregation who are ill.
