May be the funniest book ever written!

This book is so funny that one feels one must read portions aloud to anyone within hering distance. The dialogue is brilliant. Though very broad, it is always true and real. I only wish Eric Partridge were still alive....he would have found countless words - and lines - to incoporate into his "Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English." The fact that it takes place mostly in a Texas bar and is about country-Western music should not obscure the fact that this book is a kind of minor masterpiece. Bravo!

The best book I have ever read! Outrageously funny!

I read this book many years ago and loaned it out. It never came back! I have
searched everywhere for a copy. Dan Jenkin's book inspired me so much and made
me laugh til I cried! I can't remember all 10 of his "The 10 Stages of
Drunkeness" referenced in the book, but my favorite one is number seven. I
can't use all that language here but it's the level you reach at dinner time!!
I must have this book because the book I have been working on is somewhat
similiar to "Baja Oklahoma". I can't wait to read it again
I would like nothing more than to somehow reach him and give him credit
for such great work. Any ideas?

It helps

This is a very good book on the subject and should be required reading for every hunter out there. The topcs are well organized, the text clear and where necessary the pictures help out on some of the difficult points. There is also a summary at the end of the chapter to remind you of what you just learned and many practical pointers throughout the book about recovering wounded deer. The book concentrates on deer but the concepts can be applied to all groundbased hunting situations.

How to Track

I have hunted white tail for over 40 years, read many articles and books on hunting the critters but only one source has compiled how to track one after you have pulled the trigger or loosed the arrow.

This book should be mandatory reading for every hunter, experienced or not. I considered myself very experienced and was shocked at what I did not know. Now, I read my copy one month before heading into the woods. When I head out, I have it on my person. It is indexed quite well and the chapters are well categorized.

We hunters dump a huge amount of cash into our equipment. From bows to firearms to tree stands to clothing, etcetera. If we can pay for all of the equipment obtained just to have the opportunity to harvest a deer, shouldn't we be willing to spend a token amount to find that deer we just shot at?

Go ahead, its well worth the price. You won't be disappointed.

Every Hunter Needs to Know this Material.

I read this book at the wrong time. Which is to say I picked it up immediately after shooting my first deer, wounding it and being unable to retrieve it despite 2 days of tracking. If you've ever experienced this, then you know that this is the worst thing that a day's hunting can possibly lead to short of injuring a human being. Not a week has gone by since then that I have not thought about what I did wrong in my ignorance.

Don't let this happen to you. Buy this book. If you have a son or daughter who is planning their first hunt this fall, buy the book for them now. Don't just skim it - memorize it. I'm mid-way through my third reading of it. The author has tracked hundreds of deer and already made the mistakes that you can avoid if you'll listen to him.

How do you look at a single drop of blood and know which way the deer was travelling? What types of wounds will lead a deer to run what distances before bedding down? What does the color of the blood and the type of hair that the bullet or broadhead clipped off tell you about the deer's specific injuries and how long you should wait before tracking it?

If you're going out into the woods with a rifle over your shoulder then you have a responsibility to be able to answer these questions. This book answers all those questions and more. We all strive for the single shot kill but that doesn't always happen. You had better know what to do in that event.

The only reason why I do not give this book 5 stars is the sloppy editing. The publisher allowed this book to go to print with more typos than I could even count. The book is important enough to deserve a better printing with a publisher that actually employs proof-readers.

What a Surprise!

I didn't know what to expect from this book, but what I found was an astounding variety of amazing, refreshing, saddening, and inspiring stories by people who've really lived life and survived trauma to become so much more. The writing is raw, ambitious, wrenching and captivating. There are so many layers to each story, instead of the predictable survivor narratives that we've become accustomed to. I'm so glad I discovered this surprising gem.

inspiring!

I am a contributor to this volume. My piece excepted, this collection includes a wide variety of examples of abuse (physical, sexual, psychological). The writers might identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender but their stories are universal. Rather than being depressing, this book is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. I recommend it.

Dangerous families

Child abuse and neglect usually have lifelong impact on the children, who survive. Some are getting help along the way to find a place to put the pain they have experienced in their childhood, while others continue to live with the pain and continue to suffer their whole life.
This book is unusual, because 29 "queer persons" have decided to tell their stories and how they have survived growing up queer in families, where they have experienced abuse.
This book can be useful for both therapists working with the population of victims of child abuse, but also for adults who have experienced abuse themselves.

Brilliant Ideas for Sustainable Urban Design

Good Urbanism is a very interesting book to read, even for a lay reader. While the subject is outside of the professional expertise of most of us, the author was able to share much of her holistic knowledge and brilliant ideas with a larger audience. This makes the book unique since most books published in the areas of architecture and design tend to be highly technical and therefore rather inaccessible for the interested lay reader.

The author, Professor of Urbanism at University of Utah, presents in her book a number of key concepts she and her professional colleagues have developed for progressive, eco-friendly, sustainable and ultimately prosperous urban design.

In chapter 2 of the book, entitled `Urban Desiderata', the author presents the `6 Steps to Creating Prosperous Places,' which are:
1) Prospect
2) Polish
3) Propose
4) Prototype
5) Promote
6) Present

Before I will explain more in detail what this means and how this approach works in practice, I would like to let the author speak for herself, as she summarized this step-by-step process very well in the Conclusion of the book:
--Good urbanism follows the Path toward Prosperity by taking six steps: prospect, polish, propose, prototype, promote, and present. It engages in / urban acupuncture by removing blockages in `urban meridians,' thereby liberating the life force of a city and bringing urban and economic revitalization. Good urbanism thus restores connections that have been severed over the past century between body and soul, between people and nature, and among people. The strength and resilience of relationships and communities rely on trust, but trust eroded in the urban fragmentation of the second half of the twentieth century, allowing an `architecture of fear' to occupy the void. Good urbanism fosters community by cultivating relationships through a process that engages and builds mutually supportive networks of people. The trust on which relationships an communities rely ensues. /124-125

The book clearly conveys a set of eco-friendly and systems-conform values that require most readers to upgrade their ecological and systemic literacy to a quite demanding standard. The author brings in various wisdom traditions from outside our Western system of reference, such as life-wisdom from Taoism or knowledge about Feng Shui, as well as a solid knowledge-base of newer Western ideas around ecoliteracy and systems theory. She writes, for example:
--The Taoist tradition, hailing from fifth century BCE China, maintains that awareness and trust of our own inner nature allows us to be our best and avoid manipulation by others. These and other wisdom traditions exhort us to honor this rich source of authenticity and creativity. /12

The stress in the entire book is upon a combination of functional design, aesthetic appeal, sustainability, and the enhancement of communal life for bringing about prosperity and peaceful togetherness. In fact, sustainability can easily be made out as the overarching value, and the tone was set right at the beginning of the book:
--For most of human history, we built habitats that supported us more than they challenged us. As industrialization began shifting the scale and logic of urbanization, however, we veered off course and became the only species to build habitats that are not sustainable. Over the last several decades, we have been making concerted efforts to get back on course and construct places that support humanity more optimally, places that sustain us rather than strain us. /1

How can this goal be met in practice? The author explains that the key to good urbanism is what she calls the `connective tissue: infrastructure, public space, and community engagement.' She continues:
--Whether retrofitted or new, for practical purposes or pleasure, infrastructure is integrated with public spaces and both are multipurpose, technologically advanced, attractive, and harmonious with natural and cultural settings. /2

The general approach of the author is one that is highly critical toward the former mechanistic approach to urban design in the form of rigorous `planning' without bringing in the concerned communities, and without integrating a design structure into the existing habitat from an eco-friendly and sustainable perspective. She coined this systemic development of urban design wittily `From Egosystem to Ecosystem', title of Chapter Four of the book.

The book is full of original ideas and comparisons. To give one example, the author mentions restorative justice, as a good positive example of how good urbanism works with others rather than to or for others. /39

Another stress is laid upon healing wounds `inflicted upon the landscape by the modern and postmodern eras.' The vision of the author is that good urbanism integrates functions that formerly were separated, such as living, working, creating, and recreating. Further, she explains:
--To achieve this integration, good urbanism demonstrates the five qualities of `integral urbanism': hybridity, connectivity, porosity, authenticity, and vulnerability. /57

I have been immensely enriched by this well-written book and recommend it to all those who are looking for not just another tool box for architecture and design but those (others) who are looking for a systemic and sustainable approach to urban design, and design of commercial and public spaces. We are all concerned for contributing to this great and noble cause, and the author's approach expressly invites our contributions!

My wife and I are just wrapping up our first experience with the Conscious Cleanse, so this review comes straight from the trenches. While weight loss is NOT the point of this cleanse, my wife has dropped from 150 to 141 and I from 238 to 225 over the past 14 days. Pretty amazing.

One of the things the authors have you do is complete a 16-point wellness evaluation (rating things like allergies, energy, mental clarity, and stress level) on days 1, 7, and 14 to see how you progress over the course of the program. We already ate a reasonably healthful diet pre-cleanse, but I’m happy to report we logged improvements in over 80% of the categories. Again, pretty awesome.

We almost universally enjoyed the green smoothie breakfasts and (predominantly) salad lunches. Dinners were hit and miss, which contributes to my 3.5 star rating. It seems as though the recipes provided (which you don’t necessarily have to follow, though it takes the guesswork out of the equation) did not go through testing by actual chefs/cooks before going to print. My wife and I are both skilled in the kitchen, and found many of the ingredient proportions and portion yields to be off (the Curried Carrot Soup, for example, which is delicious, does NOT yield 8 bowls unless you’re eating out of ramekins). Further, eating begins with the eyes, and when your dinner for the night is an unappealing puddle of watery white glop covered with a thin brown “gravy” (I’m looking at you, Cauliflower Mashers with Mushroom Gravy), it’s hard to feel particularly satisfied. This recipe was, by far, the biggest loser of the bunch.

Another thing to consider, and I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from taking the plunge, but you should know this up front: you will be spending a LOT of time in the kitchen over the next two weeks. You will be washing, chopping, tossing, and blending until you want to run as far and fast form the kitchen as possible. My wife and I have no children and she works from home, allowing her to do some daytime prep. And STILL it was exhausting for two people who are, as mentioned, skilled in the kitchen. This will be a part time job for the next 2 weeks, so make sure you know what you’re getting into.

Energy levels have fluctuated. Some days we’ve felt like we’re walking on air, others like we’re running on empty. I’ve continued to hit the gym 3-4 times per week during the cleanse, but have noticed I’m not achieving the same power output. During the second week, I started supplementing with an organic, raw, all-veggie protein powder that seemed to help, but I’ve definitely felt a bit protein-deficient despite the veggie protein and limited lean meat the cleanse allows.

Similarly, our moods have run the gamut. We’ve definitely been “hangry” at times and I’ve literally found myself dreaming of cookies and fried seafood and pizza. Most of the time cravings can be fended off with a handful of walnuts, some peppermint tea, or even plain old water, but I tell you, I’d about kill for a burger and a beer and a night out with friends right now. Which brings up another thing we didn’t consider ahead of time: our social lives have been non-existent for the past two weeks. You will be a hermit during the cleanse. Fair warning.

All in all, we’re very glad we did this and will definitely carry a number of the precepts into our everyday life. The authors might have benefited from more targeted recipe testing as well as a little less pseudo-science (with a couple of exceptions, such as your armpits, you do NOT release toxins--or in fact, anything besides water and salt--when you sweat and, contrary to what the authors say, plain water is NOT the only thing that counts toward your daily fluid intake), but overall the concepts laid forth in the Conscious Cleanse are logical and sound. At the end of the day, you get out what you put in.

We’re on to the reintroduction phase next and based on our answers to the wellness evaluation, do not expect to find any significant sensitivities to the ingredients we’ve “kept off our plate” during the cleanse. Still, this is a unique opportunity to step away from the Standard American Diet (which carries a fitting acronym: SAD) and find out whether any of the foods we routinely eat are actually making us sick. We’ll see what happens.

Hope this review helps others who are considering embarking upon this journey. I’d recommend it, but it’s no cake walk. (Please forgive the pun…I just really want some damn cake!)

A good concert is about more than the music. "Concert Lighting: Techniques, Art, and Business" is the third edition of Focal Presses's acclaimed guide to the importance of good lighting in concert settings. James Moody is an experienced theatre technician, and Paul Dexter has done lighting for some of the biggest acts in Rock such as Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue. Good lighting enhances the music, makes the experience more memorable and more likely to return for another show. "Concert Lighting" is an absolute must for anyone in charge of the finer technical details of a concert.

I really like this book. It describes different equipment as well as the different aspects related to lighting like rigging, safety and logistics. I think the interviews are very useful because it gives different points of view. Another thing I like is all the information given for lighting design and how to do the cues for the music.

Pederasts and Others: Urban Culture and Sexual Identity in Nineteenth-Century Paris is based on a statistical analysis of more than 800 working-class and middle-class men who were arrested or investigated by Parisian police between 1873 and 1879. Their stories, presented through long and short case studies, represent nearly 2,000 names recorded by police in “Pederasts and Others,” a ledger detailing the arrests of male homosexuals for public offenses against decency and other minor offenses. (The term “pederast” identified those suspected of same-sex sexual activity, not the modern definition that indicates homosexual relations with a minor.) The ledger entries reveal specific habits, attitudes, values, and characteristics about these men that set them apart—the same traits that identified them as part of a community based on their behavior and relationships.

fair enough!

Don't let the title deceive you. There are cross-generational couplings discussed, but this is not a book on man-boy matters. In the 1800s and to this day, Francophones, of various opinions on gay rights, say "pederast" rather than "gay."

Lord Alfred Douglas' comment about "the love that dare not speak its name" really concerned the fin-de-siecle, Anglophone world. But its inapplicability to other countries and times hasn't changed the facts that little is known about other people we would now call "gays." So the author does a great job about letting us know about gay men in Paris more than a century ago. The author almost begins by saying, "This won't discuss elites like Gide and Proust, I'm speaking of the ordinary man." Thus, in a way, this is an anti-classist work. It speaks of those at the bottom of the class structure, at times.

I always thought France got rid of its sodomy laws a century before Britain does because Napoleon was being a nice guy. However, the author does a great job in saying how the philosophes and the French Revolution affected thinkings in France. Just as abolitionists didn't necessarily advocate miscegenation, antidiscrimination laws, or integrated neighborhoods, the philosophes could not be equated with modern supporters of gay rights. Just because the Francophone world lacked de jure homophobia didn't mean they didn't have the de facto type.

Still, this book falls short at times. The author writes in one sentence, "Judges would convict 'indecent' men because the offense was a misdemeanor and they wanted to focus on felonies." Okay, after he said that, then there was no need to have a chapter about judges actions; it's already been concisely stated. Next he has a whole chapter on wardens' or criminologists' thoughts on gayness, but it really only covers four books. It's great he had access to those books, but any college-educated person with similar access could have written the same chapter.

In obeisance to ideas on constructionism, the author never translates terms that could help modern readers. He mentions men who beat up gay clients, but never calls them "rough trade." He mentions men who only practiced homosexuality while incarcerated but never says "prison gay." Though Bray said Anglophones did not equate effeminates with sodomites until the late 1700s, this author quotes a man that used feminine nouns and adjectives to describe gay men and the author never comments upon it.

The examples in this book come at the end. Non-academic readers may want to start there or only read that portion of the text. These stories are not "respectable" in a Brokeback Mountain-type of way. They involve prostitution, public sexual activity, and other things that prudish readers may consider salacious. But hey, authors have to work with what they have and this author wanted to discuss those who got caught by police, not those who could successfully hide and thus not be written about.

Dr. Peniston's book gives an excellent overview of gay life in Paris during the 19th century.
Filled with references and fascinating details, this book can both serve as an excellent source for researchers and a great read for those interested in the issue.
