Christianity and Native Spirituality Are Compatible!

Though Native American and Christian seems like a contradiction because of the tragic course American history has taken concerning indigenous people- it cannot be denied that there is a long and complex tradition and relationship among America's Indigenous people and Christianity. Many tribes and Native people have cultivated and enriched this relationship going right back to the beginning of "America". This relationship, in its pure and uncorrupted form, demonstrates that one does not have to stop being an Indian to be a Christian or that one cannot be a Christian if they cling to an Indian knowledge of spiritual reality. True Christianity, undefiled by ideology and political opportunism is compatible and reconcilable with Native worldview, thought and philosophy. James Treat's book, "Native and Christian", as well as his other offerings and endeavors demonstrate this dynamic clearly. "Native and Christian" is an important work to look at for anyone wishing to explore this topic from aan anthropologic, theological or religious perspective. The problem may not be what you think

This "anti-self-help" book is amazing. Unlike most books in the "self-help" genre, this book doesn't tell the reader that the problem they are experiencing lies with them. Instead, this book asks the reader to examine the "rules" that most of us in the western democracies grew up with, and to see if the problem might not lie there.

This book doesn't offer any easy answer. The author works very hard to *not* simply present new rules for the reader to follow. Instead, Barker asks the reader to explore the question of what rules have they been working under, are there alternate ways of engaging with those rules, and finally, can they live with uncertainty in place of restrictive rules.

This book begins an amazing journey for the reader, a journey of examining implicit assumptions and opening up communications. I heartily recommend it for anyone who is interested in examining how to live in our society.

Religious conversion is an immensely complex phenomenon. The term comprises such diverse experiences as increased devotion within the same religious structure, a shift from no religious commitment to a devout religious life, or a change from one religion to another. This study focuses on the conversion experiences of 70 native British converts to Islam. It addresses the following questions - why do people become Muslims, what are the backgrounds of the converts, what are the patterns of conversion to Islam, and how far are existing conversion theories applicable to the group under study. The full range of social and psychological forces at work in the conversion experience are examined with reference to the converts, whose whole life history - childhood, adolescent experiences and the conversion process itself - were examined in detail. Chapter 1 deals with the history and present situation of both life-long Muslims and converts living in Britain. Chapter 2 focuses on childhood and adolescent experiences reviewing the psychological and sociological theories of conversion and attempts to find out how far these theories are applicable to the converts to Islam. Chapter 3 examines the backgrounds of the converts regarding religion. It then analyzes the immediate antecedents of the conversion as well as the conversion process, focussing on version motifs. A conversion process model is also developed in this chapter. Chapter 4 looks at the post-conversion period to find out what changes the converts underwent. It also examines the relationship between converts, their parents and society at large. Chapter 5 reveals the findings on conversion through Sufism. Comparisons between conversion through Sufism and through new religious movements in the West are also made. This study should be an important addition to the study of religious conversion, as conversion to Islam either from outside or within Islam is widely neglected in the literature.

Ali Köse received his B.A. in Theology from the University of Dokuz Eylul-llahiyat Fakultesi in Turkey, his M.A. in religious education from Marmara University, and his Ph.D in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of London in 1994. He is currently working for the Centre for Islamic Studies in Istanbul.

An excellent ethnography of conversion to Islam.

Conversion to Islam by Dr. Ali KOSE is an original piece of work which deals with why and how non-Muslims embrace Islam in an age of secularism which presupposes that religion will lose its influnce in modern society. This book is a rare example of an ethnographic study which fills a significant gap especially in the fields of psychology and socilology of religions with special reference to Islam. An important value of the book is its innovative interdisciplinary method comprising participant observation, depht interviews and an insighful analysis of ethnographic findings in the light of growing theoretical works on the psychology and sociology of conversion.
The book is written with a non-specialised language which makes it readable not only by the acedemic community but also by the general reader. Conversion to Islam is based on the experiences of British converts who embraced Islam. The author argues that a number of motives stimulated the informants of this research who were coming mainly from Catholic and Protestant religious backgrounds to chose Islam. He found that intellectual and spiritual search for meaning in life were the primary motives for conversion. The book not only concentartes on conversion experience but also provides important analysis of pre- and post-conversion processes while taking into account the works of grand theorists such as Freud and Jung as well as contemporary writers on conversion.
Conversion to Islam is well a researched and balanced book. Is must be recommended to graduate and post-graduate students in the fields of psychology and sociology of religion.

In the author's words: “As a very young child I experienced the Holocaust in a way that made it almost impossible to integrate and make sense of the experience. The Holocaust was in the air that I breathed daily for the first four years of my life. I took it in deeply without awareness or critical judgment. I ingested it with the milk I drank from my mother’s breast. It had the taste of fear and despair.”

Born during the Holocaust in what was once a part of Poland, Sophia Richman spent her early years in hiding in a small village near Lwów, the city where she was born. Hidden in plain sight, both she and her mother passed as Christian Poles. Later, her father, who escaped from a concentration camp, found them and hid in their attic until the liberation.

The story of the miraculous survival of this Jewish family is only the beginning of their long journey out of the Holocaust. The war years are followed by migration and displacement as the refugees search for a new homeland. They move from Ukraine to Poland to France and eventually settle in America. A Wolf in the Attic traces the effects of the author’s experiences on her role as an American teen, a wife, a mother, and eventually, a psychoanalyst.

"Stay away from that door!" the author's mother used to warn. "Don't look there, don't go near it; there's a mean, hungry wolf in there, and if you open the door he'll get out and eat you up." It's Richman first memory, and it comes from the years during WWII when she and her Jewish mother masqueraded as Christians in a small Polish town. But there was no wolf, Richman understands later, what lay hidden behind the door was her father, who had escaped from the Janowska concentration camp and whose discovery would have unmasked the family. Even at three years of age, she writes, "I understood the importance of keeping the secret of my father's existence." Richman and her parents immigrate to New York after the war, and the rest of this well-intentioned but uninspired memoir details her childhood and schooling, her relationships with men, her failed marriage, her eventual career as a psychoanalyst and her long marriage to Spyros Orfanos, a noted psychoanalyst himself. Written in clear but pedestrian prose, Richman's account details the myriad ways her early experiences of trauma shaped her later years. The ongoing themes of denial and her growing ability to identity herself as a survivor reading the diary of Anne Frank or seeing Stalag 17 give her glimpses into her experience drive the narrative; it is only after years of analysis that she understands a connection between the "difficulty in expressing myself verbally and the early injunctions against speaking the truth." As in analysis, Richman methodically goes through her life and offers theories of who she is and how she became that way. While many Holocaust memoirs focus primarily on the events of the Shoah, this volume examines the lingering effects it had on children.

Richman was born in 1941 in Poland, of middle-class Jewish parents. Five months after her birth, Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Richman's father was sent to the Janowska labor camp in Lwow, but her mother was able to obtain the birth, baptismal, and marriage certificate of a deceased Catholic parishioner, and the two of them went into hiding in the home of non-Jews. In 1943 her father escaped from the camp and joined his wife and daughter in hiding. "Terror was in the atmosphere I breathed," she remembers. In 1951, after spending time in Paris, they came to the U.S., and Richman chronicles her "struggles and triumphs of adolescence" in New York, her college years, and her work as a psychoanalyst. Her memoir is the story of what happens when a hidden child of the Holocaust grows up, the after-effects of trauma, and the difficulties of a young woman fighting to forge an identity in a world that wants to forget. A Different and Vital Perspective

I thought the book was excellent! I have read dozens of books about the Holocaust and this document certainly offers a different and vital perspective that has not previously been covered in the literature. As you progress through the book, it is quite clear that the after-effects for Holocaust survivors are persistent and nagging, and greatly affect them for the rest of their lives. Sophia Richman's experience demonstrates that tragic events that surround young children can stalk in their minds like "A Wolf in the Attic".

A Unique Perspective on the Holocaust

"A Wolf in the Attic", a memoir by Dr. Sophia Richman adds a valuable perspective to the literature of the Holocaust. Dr. Richman was a hidden child in Poland who survived to tell her story of what it meant to transcend such an ordeal and then go on to try to strive for and fit in with normal life. This work is a unique exposition of a journey to overcome a traumatic past and to engage fully in life under renewed circumstances yet with the past just under the surface. The process of coming to terms with this dicotomy is at the heart of the work and is very moving. Dr. Richman has created a compelling narrative which reveals the two faceted experience of a life of achievement and momentum amidst unconscious symbols of tragedy. The fact that the author was successful in so many ways in overcoming her trauma is an inspiration. Her story is a special one amongst Holocaust memoirs. Dr. Richman's work is highly recommended for its humanity, complexity and poignancy.

Delightful suprise!

I have never written a review before, but was so moved and inspired by this book that I felt compelled to do so. The author's descriptive writing and symbolism was beautifully accomplished. I could see the sunrise, hear the the tinkling of a bell and feel the anxiety of dangling over a precipice. The life message that Mathieu received from his Basque grandfather was rich and powerful as was his journey to discover the complexities of listening to one's heart.

Beautifully written coming of age story

I wish I could give this beautiful, lyrical book 10 stars. A wonderful story, eloquently written from the heart. I originally borrowed this book from the library, but bought it immediately after finishing it, because I know this is one I will read again with joy. The words, the story, the length, even the cover are all perfect. It is refreshing to read a book that makes you want more.

This is nice writing but not great literature . A strong voice for main character, moral values and choices, knowledge of the Basque culture, but I felt like I was reading story from a different century. Kids from a small town, old fashion surroundings, or adults with kind hearts would appreciate this.
